We took our teenage daughter to Kohls today to shop for some school clothes. As I look around, there in the checkout line was another family with a teenage boy, about 16 or so wearing a YES shirt. I take the opportunity to ask him if he really was a Yes fan, and he answered yes! His mom commented that it was a result of a school project. His dad added that his son was part of the new generation of Yes fans and that his son was also a drummer. I asked the boy if Alan White was his hero, and he responded that actually Bill Bruford was his favorite. I asked him if he was a fan of Circa: and he said he was more of an ELP fan, but asked who Circa: was. I told him it was a relatively new group that consisted of Billy Sherwood, Alan White, Jimmy Haun and Tony Kaye. He became excited and said he would look into the group when he got home. It sure was a pleasant surprise seeing a 'youngster' proudly wearing a YES shirt and so eager to talk about Yes.

Wow that's really something, Doug. Nice to know a younger generation of Yes fans are around.

The people I know, and/or work with have no idea who Yes is, so it's rare for me to find anyone who's familiar with their music. My son Eric of course knows their music through me, and has told his girlfriend (age 23) about Yes. He's also introduced her to Pink Floyd and Deep Purple, who she'd never heard of before.

Doug that was great of you to speak up and talk to the family. Maybe he'll find Yesfans too!

I often wear my Yesshirts, my favourites are the one with the tales cover and with the Tsongas annemones. One day one of my teachers (I think he was 50) asked me if I like them. I told him my story how I became a fan and everything that I did for the band. He was speechless, he said I must be the biggest Yes fan ever, after that little chat he wanted all my website URLs...

That's really cool :D

Most the time when I go up to the city I'll wear a Yes shirt. Nobody has come up to me to say, "hey, are you a fan" or anything like that.....yet.

Let me see...there was this time the cashier (a cute guy around my age)saw I was getting 2 Yes albums, he got all lit up and started talking to me in Yes lyrics, and I was so um, *blush*I didn't know what to say, so I just smiled and tried not to fall over..

then that time I was driving through downtown with the windows down playing CttE, and this college guy looked over instantly upon hearing the sound of Yes, then turned around again in a complete 180 when he realized a woman was listening to it....lol....that was cool....

true story, as I was walking along a downtown street yesterday.( there would have been no way anyone could know i liked YES. )
so anyway... this group of college-kids walks towards me in the opposite direction.

One of them shouted at me in perfect melody and rhythm as he passed by..."Move Yourself!"

I think he was trying to inform me that:

I always live my life, never thinking of the future... :)

People usually give me grief when they see me in a Yes shirt
*Are you stuck in the 70's?
*Are they still alive?
*You must be old
etc.

the best reply I've ever got was: "Is that Rick Wakeman on your t-shirt?" -"Yes..." "the painting is great, I'm sure that was you, but I hate that guy..."

I once pulled into a crowded parking lot with Yesmusic blasting from my car stereo (I don't reacall which album) and was approached by a man, who had just got out of his car. He said, "Wow, I haven't listened to that album in years."

They're out there, they're really out there! :D

Great stories everyone. Here's mine.

A few years back I was preparing for a barbeque at my place with a number of guests. I went to the local grocery store because they had a great sale on freshly made hamburger patties in 24 packs.

When I got to the store I found they were all out. So I pressed the button by the meat counter that was supposed to signal the butcher to come out. My brother and I waited and waited. Finally another employee was going into the back and I asked them to get the butcher.

Finally the butcher came out and it was some young guy in his late teens/early 20's. I asked him about the special on the 24 pack of hamburger patties. He hummed and hawed and said they were out and there were none left in the back. I showed my disappointment and was trying to lead him to take a couple of the 12 packs and combine them so we could have the deal, but he wouldn't bite.

So I was just about to give up and grab two 12's and he notices my Yes t-shirt. He says, "Oh, do you like Yes?" and I say, "You bet. Their my favourite band". He says, "Yeah, they're pretty good." I say, "Infact, I just saw them recently in Montreal. Dream Theatre opened for them." Now the guy got really excited. "Dream Theatre? No way! Damn, I missed that. They're my favourite band. How were they?" I kind of lied and said, "They were awesome. Really good show".

After a bit more banter, he says "Wow, I wish I'd have gone. Tell you what, let me go back and make you up a fresh pack of the 24 patties. Give me ten minutes."

I looked at my brother after kid went in the back and we both laughed.

Yes saved the day!

I've gotten comments at some movie theatres when I was wearing a Yesshirt: "There's the band!" "Wow, are they still around?"

funniest place I met a Yesfan was in a highway rest stop men's room... (no Sen. Craig jokes, please!) I was standing at the sink (with my Yesshirt on) and I hear, "Hey, Yesdude!" he was on his way to West Palm, just as I was, and had stopped at the same exit...

no one's ever said any of those things to me... if they did, it'd be the last thing they said...

I wore one of my Yes shirts when I was coming back from the Boston gathering.

I had a long layover at Chicago O'Hare and I was walking through the airport and there was a young guy walking behind me who said, "Hey, cool Yes shirt... do you think they have one more tour in them?" I immediately said, "Yes!" He said he sure hoped they would do one more!

Here's hoping....

Cool stories, everyone. A couple of years ago, I was just driving along when I spotted a guy wearing a YES shirt pumping gas. I immediately made a u-turn, pulled into the gas station parking lot, and yelled from my window, "Hey! Nice Shirt!" The guy smiled and waved, and I went on my merry way.

Reminds me of a time in the early eighties when John Cougar warmed up Jethro Tull who warmed up The Who. A girl who appeared to be all of thirteen yrs old sitting nearby came to see John Cougar and said she really wasn't familiar with the headliners. Geesh! She got all crazy over the John Cougar set and was about to leave. We encouragaed her to stay and she did. After Jethro Tull played, she said, "Those guys were great! Jethro Tull is my new favorite band!"

Then The Who came on. Do you know who her new favorite band was after that?

I could make an educated guess, :beerchugr:

Great thread.

Someone asked me about the Yes shirt I was wearing when I was grocery shopping once. He said he hadn't followed the band since the 80's, what were they up to now? This was around the time Wakeman came back in 2002. He was really excited when I told him they put out a few albums in the mean time he should check out and that Wakman had returned.

On two different occasions in the past few years, some young guy in his early twentys (not the same guy) approached me while I was wearing one of my Yes t-shirts and went on about how great a group they are. Also, a few years back, when I had just discovered The Ladder and was in the process of logging many a mile with the CD cranked and rocking out and dancing like a crazy man in my car seat, I received a lot of positive reactions from people, mostly younger ones. On one particular evening, I was driving down Market Street in San Francisco with The Ladder cranked, of course, and I came up to a stoplight and I believe Lightning Strikes was playing. I was dancing around and rocking out like a nut (see squirrel thread) and I glance over to the left at the busstop and this nice, portly gentleman starts spontaneously dancing around like a nut, as well. That was cool!

I see more and more young people (musicians I presume) wearing the Tales album cover Yes shirt. It really puts a smile on my face.

Not necessarily. Apparently "vintage" concert t-shirts are all the rage these days.

I remember a cuople years ago, Shakira did an ad where she wore a Relayer t-shirt, and we were jumping and down that she might be a Yes fan, and then someone said "Forget it, guys! She's just being trendy!".

(And for what it's worth, I remember seeing Son Of Iglesias on some talk show where he also wore a Yes shirt, but apparently that was another display of trendiness)

Hey, I think it'd be awesome to find out that Shakira is a Yes fan. Nothing cooler than a hot Latina who's down with Gates Of Delirium, but who knows. :dunno:
