I got this DVD toady and it is magnificent. particularly in 5.1 surround sound.
The orchestra (particularly the cute girl clarinettists) really seem to get into Don't Go, and the version of The Gates Of Delirium (my all time favourite Yes piece) is just awe-inspiring.
One sad note though was the evident disdain shown by Steve Howe when he had to play Owner Of A Lonely Heart. He obviously doesn't want anything to do with any piece of Yes music that he didn't have a hand in playing but this never stopped Rick from loving Starship Trooper or Alan from really getting into bashing the skins during Close To The Edge.
He so obviously couldn't wait for it to be over. Heck, he even gave the solo over to Tom Brislin so determined was he to do as little as possible.
Don't get me wrong. The man is an artist and I was fortunate enough to be within five feet of him during his solo tour of Great Britain but surely his dislike of the work of his predecessor and successor is not in the spirit of love and inclusivity that is at the heart of Yes music

The DVD is an awe-inspiring journey through the world of YES music, and the females within the orchestra are indeed quite attractive, but it's the wonderful sound quality that is the most captivating aspect. I missed the 'live' show (as they avoided Houston) so this is my only way of experiencing the beautiful renditions performed, and I enjoyed it tremendously!
It is a must own for any fan wanting to re-live the YES experience.

And the Dreamtime documentary was filmed in my home town - Philly! I do love this DVD. I've watched it so much that it recently became a little fuzzy to me what was played at their concert here this tour and what I saw on the DVD. I actually told someone they did "Long Distance Runaround" and then realized it was on the DVD, not from the concert. Boy did I feel like a dork...
Anway, it fills in the some of the songs they didn't do (like Close to the Edge, And You and I) so I feel complete. Unbelievable production.

It IS a fantastic DVD isn't it?!
I too wish Steve would put his take to the solo on 'Owner': I think it would be interesting to hear his interpretation of it, but alas: Steve just doesn't want to go there.
Trevor & Steve=apples and apricots, so it not only 'wouldn't' sound like Trevor's solo, it simply COULDN'T! And I would love to hear Steve's take on it. Ah well, not to be I guess! Ever the adventure...
Glad to have you on board compadre! Post often, make friends, have a blast... all good people here! So welcome aboard!

The best I have ever seen....
I went straight to the set-up, selected DTS <wow> turned off the graphics, selected Ritual and it just blew me away......
Welcome to the site Ray Rumkee (and fellow Englishman) ...Maybe my memory is playing tricks on me but I watched Steves very 'laid back' performance through Owner but I could have sworn when he came to the solo part he did create a solo of his own for it. I remember thinking 'good for you Steve' or was that just wishful thinking on my part????
Is there a recording of the Long Distance Runaround remix on the 2nd disc??? I thought that was excellent, I would love to have it.

Fantastic!
I laughed when I saw Steve playing Owner, I laughed at Jon's hand signals, I watched with amazement at Chris's performance on Ritual. Even the way they all sync'd together when the drum part of Ritual was happening amazed me.
That is an superb DVD of a band who still kick even though they are all getting on a bit. Wish I had been there!

Welcome, Ray. I heard a story about this concert a while back. Steve's attitude may have been left over from the previous night when a little tiff developed between Chris and Steve at the beginning of the encore. As the story goes, Steve started playing Roundabout. Chris thought they were going to play Owner, and he had the wrong bass. So, Jon stopped Roundabout and asked the audience to vote. The audience picked Roundabout and Chris, a little upset at the time, changed basses and they played Roundabout. So, you may be seeing on the DVD the after effects of this tiff.
I, too, absolutely love this DVD. My favorite part (not necessarily song) is the part where Yes introduced and then played In The Presence Of from Magnification. Clearly at the beginning of the song the audience is listening politely but is less than enthused to hear that Yes is going to play another new song. But at the end of the song, the audience goes nuts. Standing ovation.
This scene shows Yes winning over a skeptical crowd with a new song. And look at the smile on Chris's face at the end. His face looks like that of a little boy at his birthday party. What a moment.

Insane Teacher,
I was at this concert the night before the DVD was recorded. What you said is true: Chris wanted to play OoaLH and picked the right bass for it. But Steve had his acoustic guitar. I think he knew Chris had the wrong bass, but nevertheless he started playing the opening notes of Roundabout. Chris could not play.
It looked like a provocation between both.
Jon asked the audience which song they want to hear and there was a large majority for Roundabout. Chris was pissed off and played a uninspired version of Roundabout. A strange moment at the end of a great concert.

Yesterday I picked up a copy of the Music Laden DVD for $50.00. I could hardly get over the tempo's!
So great to see Bill play with them during this period.

The “Symphonic Live” Yes DVD is by far the best DVD that Yes has come out with. The packaging is right on, and the performance in Amsterdam is just breathtaking. I think it works so well, because of the camera work and editorial choices are so smartly done. The music is well served when one can appreciate the nuance of all these talented musicians working so well together, close up and in detail. The youthful energy of the orchestra is contagious and is captured with excitement and sexual energy! (Yes does have a sexual energy, as Power and Beauty must be considered as such. Rhythm and Soul, Yes music contains all of these, and bliss…)
Back on track, the set list is definitely an eclectic blend of rugged epics and “new music’s” offerings. I love the “Gates of Delirium” opening sound textures, and when Jon starts pushing on that mind bending synthesizer. Tom Brislin really hits the keys hard and earns his keep (in my opinion over Igor). Chris looks healthy and bright, and Steve is scholarly. Jon is in top form, and I can detect no false dubbing or lip sync issues at all. (House of Yes has a couple spot where Jon’s mouth does not match the words) Jon looks like he’s working hard to hit the notes, his intricate lyrics. It is incredible to see in such detail, not only what it takes from Jon, but from each of member of the band.
The pacing of the photography, the balance of close up and wide shots is just right. The DVD also allows for the animations to be turned off, leaving only an icon when animations are available. This is a great feature, because it’s really all about the music and what’s being played. The animations are fun, but I prefer them off! Thank you. (Still shell shocked from the KTA DVD, in which every mistake made on that DVD seems to have been corrected for Symphonic Live.)
Comparing to the other DVDs available by Yes, only the ABWH “Evening of Yes Music Plus” is in the same league (House of Yes is okay, but seems a bit lightweight, sorry Igor). The ABWH DVD not only has Wakeman and Bruford, it includes a Roger Dean set, which makes it special in my book. Concert aesthetics aside, the photography, clarity of image, and the quality of sound are all superior on the Symphonic DVD. Better technology to be sure, put to good use in giving us the most intimate musical experience possible, next to being there, or being them!
One can only hope that this DVD represents the new standard of production values and “more for your money” attitude coming from the Yes product line. I pray that the same crew films one of the 2002 shows, and captures with the same quality, this latest and greatest of the Yes line-ups. These guys are masters. Please, one or two more new DVDs of the outstanding quality attained in “Symphonic Live.” DVD is such a great medium, it can be used to bridge the gap between those who “get it” and those who don’t. Yes can reach new audiences if they continue to produce quality and value. They certainly have done so with “Symphonic Live.”
(could be an excellent “stocking stuffer” for that unsuspecting someone.)

I was the Dec 5th london show. I have a friend who loves YES but couldn't go- so imagine our delight when we watch the DVD together blasting through a great sound system.
The best renditions yet of CTTE and Ritual.
This is no doubt the very best DVD by YES.
As for the bonus materials - they stink. Don't even worry about them - just ignore them.
Did anyone notice the wierdy in white prancing around during Ritual? And who sent up the red ballon - was it prancing pete?
For me the funniest bit was CS trying to jam with SH and SH facial expression was - "hey what does this guy want from me?"
Jon - although he is everyones hero - he speaks some real CR*P sometimes and he doesn't miss an opportunity here either - and is he trying to impersonate Marcel Marceau with the hands, (feeling the wall)?
I could go on and on with more observations but I won't - just go and buy it if you haven't already.

First post - from an old/new fan (old in years, new to Yes)...
I've only been listening to Yes for a few months, starting with "The Very Best of...", then "Fragile" and "Close to the Edge". I just bought the DVD on Saturday.
It was kind of funny, but I also got a copy of the "YesSongs" VHS from my local library on the same day. I started to watch the video first and couldn't stand it, though it was neat to see what they looked like. (This was the first time I had seen the band in anything other than still photos.)
After a couple of songs, I took out the VHS and put in the DVD. Wow! I don't know what I was expecting, but after hearing some other aging acts in concert, I guess not much. But, this band can still do it.
It's hard to pick out my favorites, especially because a lot of the pieces were brand new to me. It was the first time I had heard "Soon" in the context of "Gates", and I was really moved by that.
But, much as I love "Starship Trooper", my picks would have to be "Close to the Edge" (minus Jon's gestures) and "And You and I". I loved the animation for the latter. My wife thought it was silly. Oh well....
Anyway, just thought somebody might be interested in a response from a new fan.
BTW..can anybody tell me what the symbol on this DVD is supposed to be? Is it an astrolabe? Is it worth asking what it's supposed to represent?

Just the three pieces that are on the DVD. I was pleasantly surprised by them, though - particularly the title track. I'll be getting it soon.
Tell me, is it worth it to spend the three or four extra dollars to get the edition at Borders that has 20 minutes additional material on it?

I think it would be worth the extra couple of dollars. I paid $49.95 for the regular disc here in Oz and that was my only choice.
The previous album The Ladder is also very good. That one is very upbeat with lots of Latin American flavours.
Another good DVD is the House of blues. There is a bit of noise from the crowd but the band are on fire. The version of Awaken is just lovely.

I think the figure you speak of was a creation between Jon Anderson and the artist Robert Cesca: it's a sort-of 'magnifying machine' that allows one to go from one universal plane to another: sort-of a 'tesseract' in a Madelene Le'Engle sort of way.
A door between worlds.
Hope that doesn't confuse you even more! Welcome, friend!

Well, I'm going to copy something here that I posted in the"Yes Fans Talk About Yes Albums - 'Highlights - The Very Best of Yes'" thread. My apologies to anyone who's already read it. ;)
When I bought this disc, the only song I recognized by title was "Owner of a Lonely Heart". I had seen Yes recommended in both the "progressive rock" and "concept album" categories on Amazon.com, and since I had absolutely no experience (that I was aware of) with the former, and only limited experience with the latter, I decided I'd like to hear what they sounded like before I really started delving in.
I was pleasantly surprised to recognize four other tracks on the disc from my year or so (1975-6) working night shift at a bank with a guy who had the local album rock station on all night. I didn't know the pieces by name, but I recognized them as soon as I heard them.
But, hearing samples from the different periods of history of the group made it easier for me to decide where to start my collection. I bought "Fragile", then "Close to the Edge" and haven't regretted it for a moment.
Thanks for the welcome, Earl Grey and nightliner!

Why did Yes wasted a whole orchestra playing "Don't Go", Why didn't they included one of the greatest songs of the album "Giev Love Each Day"?
Great versions of CTTE, Gates & Ritual.
Another great thing about this tour was the great selection of pretty girls playing w/ the orchestra.

I love "Don't go", I think it is very quirky.
Jon is coming out with some pretty cool lyrics lately. The first time I put on The ladder the lyrics "I speak from some sort of protection of learning. Even though I make it up as I go along" really made me sit up and smile.
Don't go has a couple of things like that for me. Plus it's good to see the girls get into it.

The Symphonic DVD is great, and I'm waiting for the 2002 tour DVD to come out. How great would that be. I'm happy to be going to the LA show in December making 3 viewings for the year!
The reason I'm replying is because of the comments regarding "Don't Go" and my impressions of that and other pop songs. It seems like in an attempt to get a radio hit, Yes calculates out a song that they think will score like past triumphs. I personally think that Don't Go is in that catagory. I understand the temptations and applaud all new music by Yes. I'm always aware of the ticking clock. Wondering which will be the last tour or last album. So I try and soak in every bit that I can.
I like Don't Go. I think it has a weird sorrow to it. It makes me imagine lost loves or the sad strain of leaving someone close. I think it has some interesting sounds that no other band could come close to. I guess if I have to rag on anything, it would be the voice box stuff and the fact that it is a bit out of place with the rest of the album. But I LIKE IT! I did the internet download before the album release, and listened to it for days over and over. I also cut a demo video to it of alien abductions and weird monsters! Now that's the kind of imagery I think of when I hear that song! UFO's here I come!
Anyway, the only other Yes DVD to date that is anywhere near the level as Symphonic is the ABWH Yes music plus. Get it if you can.
Peace my bothers and sisters, we're gonna need it after the November elections and the US swing to the right. Check out "Bowling for Columbine" if you can, it's got an interesting perspective on what's going on. If you can't see that film, go see Yes for the second leg! Yeah baby! Can't wait to get me one of them new t-shirts.

I think "Give Love" is the best song too (tied w/ Dreamtime).
About "Don't Go", OK, maybe is not that bad. The reason why I can't stand this song is because it's not a song for Magnification,
that's a song for CDs like OYE, etc. I mean, you buy this new CD
thinking "Man, they've done it again!! another CLASSIC album!!! and they promote this SYMPHONIC album with the less Symphonic song. A month ago I went a freind's house to see the DVD and I told him to see the DON'T GO video clip for an opinion.
After the first minute, he asked me to stop the video and to put the other stuff, and he tells me: "I can't believe they have all this footage of this big orchestra playing for this comercial & simple song, I can't barely see the orchestra playing any melody, just simple rythm". Think about it, if you've never heard Magnification and you see the video of Don't Go in VH-1, maybe you'd think "well, the song is cool, but... is that what they call Symphonic?!?
I think that's why they didn't include "Money" in "Going for the 1",
just doen't match w/ the album.

I get the feeling that YES was still under the impression that they needed a 'radio hit'. Which, who knows, could still happen.
But in the present climate of 'YOUTH-AS-HITMAKER', is doubtful.
There was a better chance when the earmark for a hit was the punk-mentality of 'less is more'. From such, we recieved Tormato.
Which was good, in retrospect: I hated it when it was the new album...
There's more than one way to skin the billboard charts: I think as long as YES are true to themselves and push the envelope of their own creation, there will be those who are willing to put out the $ for a new CD: hell, I'm there. And so are you.
A three minute pop-hit is unnecessary for album sales.
The 'tailored' radio-hits are probably baggage at this point in the game.
Magnification is a perfect album, but for 'Don't Go'.
I have a feeling that YES has figured that out by now, and that the next album wont contain such a thing!
It's not that bad a song, really... kind-of 'catchy' don't you think?
"Don't take love... for... granted!"
Indeed!
'Dreamtime' is much 'catchier' to my seasoned palette.

Earl, I think "Don't Go" is very catchy, musically. I couldn't get past some of the strange lyrics at first, but once I did, I started to love it. I'm glad I gave it -- and Magnification as a whole -- a chance because it's definitely found a home in my soul. Now I'm in the process of convincing old Dave to give it a chance.
Did anyone hear the XM radio broadcast where they talk about making the Symphonic DVD? It's a riot.

I don't dislike 'Dont Go'... it's just not my favorite song on the album: I have given the song quite a few chances! :)
After I first heard it, I would pass it by on the CD: now I let it play through: sometimes I like it, other times I'm still not enthralled... depending on my mood.
It's still my least favorite song on Magnification... But live, it has it's charms: I like the guitar-bits on it: a little like Long Distance Runaround...
'Don't Go' works a bit better on The Symphonic DVD: the orchestra seems to be into it: again, the girl's enthusiasm is catching!

She is the woman on the documentary disc. And I am the lucky guy that got to marry her. ;)
It was such a nice surprise to see that we made it on the DVD and not the cutting room floor. It was a magical evening, the show was fantastic!! It was only the second time Marcia and I got to see Yes together (we have now seen four shows together). But it was obviously the most special. We were under the impression though that the concert was being taped as well. Bob Cesca and their crew tried to get us backstage after the show to meet Alan (and the rest of the band of course), but we didn't have any luck. The security crew was being very anal, which we understood.
The thing that I thought would have been cool for that tour was to play more of the new album. I liked the idea of experiencing never heard before material from the band live. But just to be able to see them live so many times is a blessing.

Well, I must say that I am baffled as to the general air of dislike towards 'Don't Go'. It is a fabulous, funky and hummable little toon which just shows that Yes are as adept at producing little gems as they are at creating something as awe-inspiring as The Gates Of Delirium.
It just underlies one of the main reasons I fell in love with Yes when I first heard them. They can do everything. Rock, soul, medieval acoustic stuff, epics and, yes, the perfect three-minute pop song. Long may they continue

Its easy for Rick and Alan to buy into songs like Close to the Edge and Starship Trooper because they are timeless pieces. Owner is a vacuous piece of 80's pop, catchy and kind of charming in a goofy way, but intrinsically embarrassing to someone like Steve I would expect. I imagine there are times when he wants the ground to swallow him up when he hears those opening chords.

I finally got this DVD Yesterday and I was Blown away by it! It is absolutely incredible. The Orchestra is having so much FUN! Chris is on FIRE especially in Ritual! Jon is clearly enoying the audience and the entire experience. Tom Brislin was a pleasant surprise...he brought a lot of energy to the performance! Alan proves once again that he is one of the finest drummers in rock, and it was cool getting to see him play the Keys. Steve was great as well save for the OOALH fiasco. I think that maybe that shouls have been left off the DVD. Alan & Chris are pouring plenty of energy into it, but Steve's playing is completely flat. Despite that, the performance was amazing..I would highly recommend it to anyone ho does not have it yet.

Although it has been out for some time now, I noticed the Yes-Best of Musikladen ( not binladen) at a local store on sale for $15 and read on the label it only is barely 20 minutes long. The price is cheap for an import but still, what could they possibly fit in just 20 minutes, those must be really old and short Yessongs written long before epics like TFTO, CTTE, Gates. But the question is: Is this a fairly good DVD even if it is so short, and is the picture quality good or poor? I don't want to buy it just for the sake of Yes devotion but based on a fair judgement.
Thanks all, peace and love.

Brother Christmas brought me my first DVD player...
So I threw myself at a local high-tech store and got Symphonic. It is incredible. My thought is: we have been blessed that Yes have survived as a rock band long enough to release this... it will remain in history. Just a little worse than Yessongs, but apart from that, Yes' best live ever. And it is absolutely great to have those versions of GoD and Ritual. They both sound and look far better than Yesshows.
It was like going to that unforgettable concert again (and again, and again...)
Thanks Yes!

Oh my God! I have heard the audio many times, over and over. I've read everything everyone has said about it here on the site. Today was the day I finally experienced the YES SYMPHONIC dvd! I knew it was going to be great, but it truly exceeded my expectations! I bought it, then I brought it to my friend's house. He has a better stereo and bigger TV screen than I have! We had the music cranked up loud and clear, and it was fantastic to watch. I'm really kicking myself for missing that tour, but now I feel like I was there after all!
I'll explore the 2nd disc tomorrow...

I am actually listening to ITPO from it as I type this...The TV is in the next room so I can't see it, but I can hear it very well :D

Minor complaint. Maybe it's just my DVD player, but there are a number of audio dropouts throughout YES SYMPHONIC. Many of them occur just before an animation section begins. Is this simply because of the disc being multi-layered, or could it be that I have a cheap DVD player?

I think the figure you speak of was a creation between Jon Anderson and the artist Robert Cesca: it's a sort-of 'magnifying machine' that allows one to go from one universal plane to another: sort-of a 'tesseract' in a Madelene Le'Engle sort of way.
A door between worlds.
Hope that doesn't confuse you even more! Welcome, friend!

I bought the Yes Symphonic DVD yesterday and was tracking back through YesFans for earlier threads relating to it. As I read this comment from Early Grey my email pinged.
The email read "RIP Madelene L'Engle: http://tinyurl.com/2fdfu3"

It has been awhile sence I have see this DVD.... I popped it in this morning and boom!! "WOW" I said to myself. This DVD is packed with real power and the energy caught on film is real. It reminds me of the beauty of the album magnification. A very deep album with tones of energy. It blows my mind that it has been this long since a yes album was made.
I hope the song "in the presence of" makes it on the list of the NEXT yes tour.
And oh my god.... the symphonic girls! So meny of them are so hot.I found myelf hitting the pause button when the sympho girls were on screen. So cute!!
Well... I must be going now. There is a man selling candy floss outside. He has a little stand on the corner of the road and has sad clown makeup on. He told me once he might try to sell toffy apples but he was not sure if they would sell or not. He is such a sad clown.... He always paints a little tear drop from his eyes.

Starship Trooper is the only song I have had any problems with. Sound does what you describe "drops off". On the CD that accompanies the DVD that is not the case. "Same song clean as a whistle."
