I recently got The Ladder and Keystudio, and I want to know if Magnification is anything at all like these albums?

I don't think Magnification is like anything else, Yes or otherwise. It's a perfect mesh of Yes and orchestra. A major work. If you have a DVD-Audio player, it is ideal for this album. It was designed for surround sound.

Mag is a tripster.

Loved the first tune

Can You Imagine -- one of my faves

other than ITPO--the rest is kinda boring

Definately.

Mag is ... softer and deeper, smoother.

The Ladder ... pops, is playful, thoughtful and fun, while KeyStudio is more like Mag, but KeyStudio still has an edge to it and Mag doesn't.

 You know what I mean? Just get Mag and see for yourself, and get back with us on it, please. I'll be curious as to what you think.

I am so glad you asked this because i was going to start a thread in praise of Mag. Usually when i am doing some project (stripping/painting) i throw "Going for the One" on continous play. But during this go-round with Jon and the SOR, after the intermission, he came out by himself (at first) and started so quietly, the first notes, then "Standing here on sacred ground.....". The audience really quieted to hear it, then the kids started playing , and the whole thing just built up so beautifully from those first moments. It really resonated with me and since then Mag has been getting the bulk of my time. I think this has been a very underated collection.

Give Love Each Day, Time is Time, In the Presence Of, all top notch songs... All quite different from other YES albums, but go ahead and buy it (don't be fooled by the low price it's getting), you'll be pleasantly surprised..

Mag is a wonderful album. It's amazing you can find it for 1.99 nowadays.

I don't know about Magnifation, but MagnifICation is an amazing work. The title track is awesome. 'Can You Imagine?' is incredible - Chris on lead vox!! 'Soft As A Dove', 'We Agree', 'Give Love Each Day' all great pieces.
'Dont Go' I think is a fun little diddy.

Then there is 'In The Presence Of' which is on par with 'Close To The Edge', 'And You And I', 'Ritual', 'To Be Over', 'The Gates Of Delirium', and the mighty 'Awaken'. Pure and uncontrived greatness.

The cover, lyrics, and story are just added bonuses.

I have given this album to 4 people who were not YES fans and they love it. It turned one of them into a HUGE Yes fan, actually. She went out and bought 4 more YES albums that same month!

This track is so divine! I love it! Chris should do more vocal parts with Yes! And also Jon's background vocals are brilliant...this track could go on forever...

Stop motion?

I'd load the video into a player that lets me advance frame by frame and take screenshots....Then load the screenshots into ImageReady....

Is that how you did it?

difficult...first convert from the DVD into Nero files (mp4) than back again to .avi, after that load the "movie" into the best video program ever (no, I don't start moaning) "Windows Movie Maker", make a photo of every frame (by hand). After that converting into gifs in Adobe Photoshop, if that's done load up in Myspace and then I can use it as signature...

but Rick's left hand is in a very dubious position.....;)

but his playing live Mag on tour, in place of the orchestra, proves that he is as incredible as Nina believes !!! the orhestra wasnt even missed !!

Its nothing like The Ladder or Keystudio.

Its got jons stamp all over it (hope you like jon).

In the Pressence of is a true Yes Epic, the first of its kind since Awaken, Gates, Tales, and CTTE. Its the closest Yes has ever gotten at catching that "it" thing that is largly missing on works since 94'

If you like yes you must have magnification. Sorry Rick Fans but the fact that this was mainly hashed out by Jon, Steve, Chris, and Alan is a vary good thing!

What did you think of Time is Time from the Tsongas DVD? I loved Wakey's input (I love the original as well)... He and Jon can really hit it off as a duo sometimes - ie The Meeting, Show Me ..

Of the three, Magnification is the best one.

The only thing wrong with 'Magnification' is that it hasn't got a follow-up album!
It's kind of sad that it was released in 2001 and we've not been blessed to have another studio contribution from the best bunch of musicians in the Universe, since!

Magnification, Give Love Each Day, In the Presense Of, Time is Time...some of their best stuff -IMO

and the The Symphonic dvd is amazing. Great sound/performance/ set list! The symphony were so into it. I love how they all were smiling and grooving to the tunes , too cool ;)

I also love this track...I think the live version on Tsongas is much better than on Magnifcation...maybe because of Wakey? I think so...
In my opinion is "Time is Time" just a little song on Magnification, but Rick makes a really great track of it! (I love the whole acoustic section on Tsongas...)

my neighbor's macaw was putting up a screech so i decided to blast him however magnification stuck out and so i popped it in. i haven't posted in over 2 years. during the album i said i gotta go on line and mention how quality song after quality this "sleeper " contains. while yes are masters they still had too put in an incedible amount of time to create so many subtle intricasies....

I loved "Time and a Word" so when I heard this album was also done with an orchestra I couldn't wait to hear it. It's not really anything like that album, the band has evolved since then. There are some very good Yes songs on here such as:
Magnification
Don't Go
Give Love Each Day
Can You Imagine
Time is Time

So if you like everything else that Yes has done, you'll probably like this as well, IMO.

The great difference between Tima and a Word and Magnification is that at least we got to here some keyboards on the former. The lack of keyboards on Magnification is a bit turn off even though some of the songs are not too bad namely the title track

Is The Pope Catholic?
Do bears sh*t in the woods?
Does Def Leppards drummer swim in circles?

Magnification is my favorite Yes album since .... well at least ABWH & Union ... but that doesn't tell ya squat, since opinions on Yes albums are so varied.

But it's at least tied with anything since the late seventies for me.

Other people have said it's lousy, or that it's too soft.

Me, it's exactly the kind of music I wanna hear from Yes in the 21st century.

[And perhaps the ONLY new music I'll hear from 'em this century!]

I find it completely excellent ... a worthy entry in the catalog. Man I gotta dig this album back out; haven't listened to it in a long time.

I got Magnification a few days ago and I think Magnification and Spirit Of Survival are the 2 best songs on it. I was hoping for more of Jon's whaling vocals like on "Homeworld" or "Mind Drive" but it's all mellowed out... but still brilliant!

It's a great album and I'm going to be listening to it for days now...

Magnification is a magnificent album. It is yes through and through whilst still sounding gloriously original. The orchestra is a marvelous addition and really beefs up the sound. Personally I would love it if they always performed with an orchestra (and rick of course). I believe it picks up from where Going for the one left off. The production is amazing (loads of bass!:rightG: ), and the writing is unparralled by anything since 90125. I just hope ever so much they bring out an album of this Calibre for their 40th anniversary.

It is on the level of the great classicl musicians from the days of yor, long ago. A Masterpiece. A work of Art. Good Taste and Quality.

It would make a really great supplement to these last couple albums for sure.

I really enjoy Magnification. "In The Presence Of" is the dog's bollocks. I'll never forget hearing that one, for the first time, live. Blew us away.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but both "The Ladder" and "Magnification" to me are great Yes albums.

I don't think you're in the minority Matt - I just think that, like any older band ... there's never going to be the same reverence for the new material.

Lots of folks don't really even gravitate to those releases, even when they do like 'em.

But my experience has been that those few of us who've embraced the albums enough to become familiar with them (Ladder & Magnification) seem to have achieved a consensus: Great albums.

We got a handful of folks that hate 'em, but those are the same dudes that like to hate on, like half their output since 1974.

The Ladder saved my life, period.

Magnification is another great album with a couple of clunker songs on it. However, ITPO is the first Yes masterwork since Awaken, I think.
