And which was the best? Which the worst?

For me, it has been:

- Seattle Center Coliseum, 1984
- Rose Garden in Portland, OR, 1984
- ABWH at the Paramount Theater in Seattle, 1990
- McNichol's Arena, Denver, 1991
- LB Day Amphitheatre, Salem, OR, 1994
- Great Woods Center For The Performing Arts, Mansfield, MA 1994
- Temple Buell Theatre, Denver, 1997
- Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery, Woodinville, WA, 1998 and 2001
- Paramount Theater, Seattle, 1999 and 2002
- Universal Ampitheater, Universal City, CA, 2000
- Queen Elizabeth Theatre, Vancouver, BC, 2001
- Chastain Park Amphitheater, Atlanta, GA, 2001
- Kirkland Performance Center, Kirkland, WA, 2002 (rehearsal benefit)
- Benaroya Hall, Seattle, 2002
- Seattle Center - Key Arena, 2004

14 different venues in all.

BEST: Queen Elizabeth Theatre, Vancouver, BC (amazing acoustics and very attentive crowd)
WORST: Chastain Park Amphitheater, Atlanta, GA (what a terrible place to see a show. The patrons there would never shut up - so rude.)

Cobo Arena, Detroit, MI ~ Solos 1976
Olympia Stadium, Detroit, MI ~ Tormato 1979
The Palace Of Auburn Hills, Auburn Hills, MI ~ Union 1991
Pine Knob (now DTE Energy) Music Theater, Clarkston, MI ~ Talk 1994
Grant Park, Chicago, IL ~ Masterworks 2000
Interlochen Music Camp, Interlochen, MI ~ Symphonic 2001
Chicago Theater, Chicago, IL ~ 2002 (twice)
The Palace Of Auburn Hills, Auburn Hills, MI ~ 35th Anniversary 2004

Interlochen was my favourite - a mostly outdoor theater (it has a roof and open sides. A nice view of the lake out one of the sides and the venue was built specifically for music, so the acoustics were perfect, imo.

Stadiums are becoming my least favourite place to see a concert. The sound is usually terrible and the atmosphere is too imposing - I feel like I'm in an empty airplane hangar.

THe (old) Spectrum in Philly (Tales, two legs of Relayer, Going for the One, two legs of Tormato).

JFK Stadium ('76 solo tour).

Joe Lewis Arena in Detroit (90125).

Some arena at San Diego State (1st leg, last tour).

Universal Ampitheatre in LA (2nd leg, last tour).

Keil Auditorium - St. Louis - many times
Great Western Forum - Inglewood CA (in the round)
Pacific Amphitheatre - Costa Mesa CA
Santa Barbara County Bowl - yeswest
The Fox Theater - St. Louis

Thanks Mark. This made me pull out my old ticket stubs and I realized that I've been short changing myself. I actually did see a show on the Talk tour, which should make twelve all together for me. Let's see.....

- Cow Palace, Daly City, CA ~ 10/6/80, 3/31/84
- Greek Theatre, UC Berkeley, CA ~ 9/21/84
- Oakland Coliseum Arena, Oakland, CA ~ 2/27/88, 5/17/91
- (ABWH) Shoreline Amphitheatre, Mountain View, CA ~ 9/9/89
- Cal Expo Amphitheatre, Sacramento, CA ~ 7/14/94
- The Warfield, San Francisco, CA ~ 12/18/97
- Concord Pavilion, Concord, CA ~ 6/21/00, 9/17/04
- Konocti Harbor Inn, Kelseyville, CA ~ 7/19/02
- HP Pavilion, San Jose, CA ~ 4/17/04

Yup, that's twelve! Yeeee-hahhh!

So the worst would have to be the Open Your Eyes tour at the Warfield in SF. The sound was crappy as I remember. Chris was mixed all wrong and drunk maybe. I wasn't even aware that there was a new album at the time. And I'm sure that I was on the wrong kind of drugs.

The best sound was at the Greek Thatre in Berkeley on the second round of the fresh Yes West boys concert. The acoustics at the Greek are excellent and Jon was really at a peak with his pure voice. (It Can Happen!) I was at a much purer time in my life, as well, which made for an enliven-lightning experience.

But far and above, for me, was the last one I experienced, which is also the second to the last one they've done. There was something in the air that night. This was one of the most spiritually moving experiences of my entire life!

Great venue.....one of my favorites in Chicago.

I've seen them at both of these venues several times myself. I've also seen them at Phillips Arena in Atlanta.

The Spectrum, Philadelphia, PA - 1984(x2), 1987(x2), 1988, 1991(x2), 1994, 2004
Mark G. Ettess Arena, Trump Taj Mahal, Atlantic City, NJ - 1991
Allentown Fairgrounds, Allentown, PA - 1994
The Mann Music Center, Philadelphia, PA - 2001
The Tower Theater, Upper Darby, PA - 1999, 2002
The Tweeter Center, Camden, NJ - 1998, 2000, 2002

Hard to say what the best venue is - probably the Tower Theater, as long as it's floor seating. The balcony does wierd things to the sound. Worst venue would be the Spectrum, I guess, although I have had some great shows there. All depends on how good the sound crew is if you're going to get good sound in a hockey arena.

Beacon Theater NYC ( 3 times 97/97/99)
PNC Arts Center Holmdel NJ ( 2 times 01/ 02)
Forrest Hills Tennis Center Queens NY (84)
Brendan Byrne Arena East Rutherford NJ ( 87)
Taft Theater Cincinnati OH ( 99)
Radio City Music Hall NYC (01)
Performing Arts Center Newark NJ ( 02)

Can't say best and worst a Yes show is worth it wherever whenever...some were great for the huge concert feel, but it was also great when Yes moved to the smaller places for sound and being close to the band.

But I can say the the Brendan Byrne arena had (has)no charm..at Radio City I could hear the orchestra...and Performing Arts Center in Newark is a beautiful place, pefect for a concert...any show in NYC has plenty of juice....the PNC in NJ is underatted place to see a show, very nice, as is Jones Beach.

It was a great place to see a Yesshow! I missed the beginning of Nine Voices because it was right after the break and I was having a cig and using the facilities. A lesson to be learned: never indulge too much in vices during a concert or you might miss something good! Hey, were you at The Berghoff before the spring show? We had a Yes fans get together there. I hear they closed it down? Great place to get a corned beef sammich and some tasty homemade brew. That was like a Chicago icon, too, wasn't it?

well Hugh, you saw the Drama line-up more than me. I didn't go back on the second night.

Most people had fairly strong views on those gigs, which was understandable. The set-list was wrong as Trevor couldn't get those high notes on Jon's songs - especially AYAI. If they'd sung more material from the Drama sessions, the crowd might not have been as hostile. The crowd was a little calmer on the second night though. I get the impression from what I've read that the crowds on the USA leg of the Drama tour were a bit more tolerant.
I've never heard anything from the UK gigs since the tour. Maybe if I was to hear the Glasgow gigs again I might be horrified!

According to Steve Howe - Lewisham Odeon was the most hostile crowd on the tour - but Glasgow Apollo ran it pretty close.

Springfield Civic Center, Springfield, Massachusetts x 2 once again!GFTO, 1977 and then again for Tormato a year later. The earlier of these two was a great show, despite there being an almost Cincinnati-ian/Who type crush at the gate beforehand. The Tormato show was the only time I've ever seen Yes less than inspired.

Essex Junction, Vt. -- what was essentially a fairgrounds, Sept.2004.Best sound I've ever heard from Yes, tightest two hour set I've ever seen from anyone! And, never saw them outwardly happier...goes to show, one never knows, does one...

Garden State Arts Center (now PNC Arts Center), Holmdel, NJ (8/27/04 last show--saw four shows in 04, Spectrum, 5/10/04; MSG, 5/13/04; 8/20/04 in AC, and this show at PNC)
Tweeter Center, Camden, NJ
Mann Music Center, Phila
The Spectrum, Phila
The Borgata, Atlantic City, NJ
Roosevelt Stadium, Jersey City, NJ

I have virtually all the ticket stubs to all the shows that I've seen at these venues. I'll have to find the time and get the dates together.

Not sure if the "best" and "worst" refer to the shows or the venue's

*The Relayer show was my first Yes concert, and holds a very special place in my heart. I saw many acts at this venue in Seattle, including Yes, twice. Led Zeppelin, Heart, Bowie, Supertramp, etc. Not the greatest venue in the world for convenience, sound, etc. - but a lot of fine fine memories.

**When asked, (in fact on a recent thread), I usually site the Relayer show as my favorite Yes show ever, but when I sit and think about it a little longer, it's probably this one actually. This venue was awesome. It was big enough, while still maintaining intimacy. It was in the round, and my wife and I were in the 2nd row. Eight of my favorite musicians in the world, close enough to talk to, and playing excellent. Everything worked great. The sound, the performances, even the people around us were cool. Fellow mega Yes fans. Lot's of great pre-show conversation with people we'd never met. Just really hard to top. Awaken, Trevor's solo, Shock to the System, and Heart of the Sunrise were all just stellar, as well as everything else.

***Our worst Yes related experience. It's really not the fault of the venue, and as for Yes, they were awesome, and made up for everything. After an endless weather delay, a drenching thunder storm followed by a dust storm so that we were all covered with mud, Yes still came out and did they're full set to the faithful who remained. Horrible day. Fantastic concert to soothe our wounds. I can't make a fair assessment of Desert Sky Pavillion. i'm sure they did what the could under the circumstances. It was purely mother nature. I'm so grateful to Yes for not abbreviating their show. We were all so afraid of that. We thought that IF they came out at all, it would be a shortened and hurried gig. Not so. They were awesome. Trevor was on fire. The best I ever saw him play. Even better than the Union gig. He played piano leading into And You and I. It was spellbinding.

Wow!

Let me think a bit here...

The Great Western Forum, Los Angeles, CA... A few times, back in the 70's.

The House Of Blues, Hollywood...

The Universal Ampitheatre, every time they ever played there...

The Gibson Ampitheatre, every time they ever played there (same place, different name!).

The Cricket Arena (or something like that), Phoenix AZ.

...What's the name of the arena in San Jose where they played in '04 again?

...Las Vegas, Waikkiki Hawaii, Orange County, etc etc...

Here's my problem: I've seen the band SO many times, in so many places, and most of the venues, but for the local venues, I can't remember the names of since I travelled there just to see YES...
Blame it on :bonghitte

HAHA!

...I should've read Matt's entry above my own first, then I could have mentioned Irvine Meadows in '03, and the Tower Records in store show in '04.

The Craig Kilbourn TV Show in '04, forgot that one...

I have all of my ticket stubs somewhere here, but am too lazy to look for them right now! :ele:

And which was the best? Which the worst?

BEST: Queen Elizabeth Theatre, Vancouver, BC (amazing acoustics and very attentive crowd)
WORST: Chastain Park Amphitheater, Atlanta, GA (what a terrible place to see a show. The patrons there would never shut up - so rude.)
I'm kicking myself for not even knowing the 2001 and 2002 shows existed in Vancouver until years later- had to go all the way to London, Ont. in 2004 to see them- John labbatt Centre had iffy sound. Hockey arenas, bleah. Only seen Zappa at Queen E. Theatre 1984 and The Dweez last December.
:heydude:

June 27 1975 Vancouver BC PNE Coliseum
May 5 1979 - in the round, Vancouver, probably the best- PNE Coliseum
April 2 1984 Vancouver BC PNE Coliseum

-seeing a pattern? Had to go out from Edmonton first show and ferry from Vancouver Island for last. Lived in Vancouver 1979-1989.

ABWH- okay this makes no sense- I remember going from work to the PNE Coliseum in March, 1989 , not 03/12/90 because I moved to Vancouver Is. Nov. 1 and I do not recall travelling to the Mainland for that gig.
http://www.forgottenyesterdays.com/tour_listing.asp?s=5&tname=13&SortBy=tDate&so=asc&navb=4

-worst crowd at this gig: smashed wine bottles and smell of coke+tobacco joints, nasty remnant of the Awful Eighties. Crowd seemed
creepier and wasted in an evil way; glad those days are gone.

May 20 1991 Vancouver BC PNE Coliseum
Onion tour :sneaky:
-okay this was as good as the Tormato
gig

07/11/94 Deer Lake Park, Burnaby, BC - had tickets with nephew - CANCELLED- we refused to travel to
07/10/94 George, WA Gorge Amphitheatre
with little notice and got refunds, grrrrr. Border crossing to unknown venues with little warning? UH-uh.

August 30 2004 London Ontario John Labatt Centre -crummy sound, superhot, humid weather, another hockey arena... but:

I agree.

If they tour again in 2008, I am definitely planning to see as many shows as I can. I may even venture across the pond to see some European countryside and take in some Yes show.

That is, if I can get the wife to agree to it. We celebrate 25 years of marriage next year, and I think she has her heart set on a Hawaian vacation. $$$$$$$$$

This seems like an interesting thread for a first post, although I’m absolutely humbled by the amazing lists of shows folks have seen! For me, it’s only two, sadly enough:
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>
Yes: <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Madison</st1:City>, <st1:State w:st="on">WI</st1:State></st1:place>, 1984 – so very young then, and pleased beyond all reason that Yes was back! And dude, they had lasers.
<o:p></o:p>
ABWH: World Music Theater, 1989(?) – Wonderful show, beyond the drunks in front of us who yelled “And Howe!” every time Steve touched a guitar. I stood in line for a long time at a local record store to actually speak (however briefly) to all four, and have the liner notes of my cassette tape signed. A great moment for someone who doesn’t get to go out much! In passing, and to fill my nervous silence, I asked Steve who was going to be playing keyboards and other miscellaneous backup stuff at the show. He was either exhausted or… well, let’s say he was exhausted. :) After a long pause, he looked in my general direction and said “The show? The show starts at 8 o’clock.” Jon was listening in, and gives him an odd look before bursting out laughing.

Well even though mine has a lot less than most posted here I will list them.

1976 ft wayne,IN Memorial Colesium
1977 Indianapolis, IN Market Square Arena
1979 Long Beach,CA Long Beach Arena
1984 Indianapolis, IN Market Square Arena
1984 Ft Wayne, IN Memorial Colesium
2002 FT Wayne, IN Embassy Theatre
2004 Auburn Hills MI 35th Anny The Palace
2004 Merrillville, IN 35th Anny Star Plaza Theatre

Best probably the Star Plaza or Embassy Theatre I was sitting in row 1 at the Embassy and in row 2 at Star Plaza I was able to do the meet and greet at Star so that probably wins it for me because both places have good sound and fans were very good.
Worst maybe .....Market Square Arena.

I called that the "up and down tour" - Glasgow was actually after Newcastle.
We drove down to Newcastle from Scotland, saw the show, drove back to Scotland, saw the Glasgow show, then took the train down to Nottingham for the show there - train home to Scotland.
On the drive back from Newcastle, it was snowing, and the fan heater in the car packed in, - bad enough for me the driver, but think of those poor people trying to sleep in the back. :-)

How was the Montreal venue for ABWH? Great tour, eh?

Animation 1982 (with King Crimson) - Holmdel, NJ - Garden State Art Center (PNC)
-sounds wicked, wish I'd seen that instead of KC alone a year later in Vancouver . Didn't buy Animation until ~1988 on cassette.

I think the Montreal forum was a hockey rink, but they had a decent sound dialed in for 1989. I think starting the show with all the solos allowed the sound man to really dial in the sound just right. The venue was by no means perfect and you could hear some of the limitations of a hochey arena coming through the sound. But the mix was truly impecable that night. Again I think starting with the solos was key, so that by the time they hit "Birthright" it was just like the CD! Also what a perfect song to begin mixing a band with, as it builds by layering parts. "Close to the Edge" was very good! Other highlights of the show for me were: "Themes", "The Meeting" and of course "Heart of the Sunrise". Even "Roundabout" was better, as they brought it back to its original tempo, instead of the 100 mph version they had been doing for encores in years prior. Here is their entire setlist from that night.
Young Persons Guide To The Orchestra

I loved the show. The seats were ok considering we got them the day of the show. About 1/3 of the way back first section off the floor on Wakemans side. My wife and I were vacationing in Quebec and didn't even know they were in town. It was awesome to see Howe and Wakeman again. I hadn't seen either since the Tormato tour 10 years prior. The inclusion of their solo parts made it even better, especially Wakemans.

The combined Crimson / Anderson show was OK, but both did a slightly shorter set, especially Anderson, as Crimson was the headliner. I had seen Jon earlier that year, solo in Asbury Park, and it was a much better Anderson show. As for Crimson I believe they were touring for the "Hearbeat" cd, and I had seen them a year or so prior touring for the "Discipline" tour. I thought the Disciple show was much better. They were doing more old stuff and all of the "Discipline" cd which I was in love with at the time. The "Heartbeat" cd didn't do as much for me and that tour was heavey with the newer material, and as I said a slightly shorter show due to Anderson on the bill. The venue made a difference also. The other shows were at theaters, were as the PNC is partially outdoors, so for me the sound wasnt as good.

You didn't happen to catch Crimson at the Paramount in Seattle for the "Thrak" tour did you? I thought that show was awesome!!! Also I think the California Guitar Trio opened the show.

Did you catch Jon with Kitaro at the Paramount? Perhaps the best I have ever heard Jon sound! I was 14th row center....ahhhh :-))

I see you caught that Gorge show in '94 also. That was a beautiful sunny day wasnt it. I was about 10 rows back on the right. Trevor stole the show that day from my perspective.

Didn't go to the Gorge, no, never been there.
Only seen Crimson in '83, the Commodore in Vancouver and
Earthworks there ~'87.
ABWH there in a decent arena and of course the Levin/Bruford
duet isn't on the live DVD, rats.
