There is a site trying to accumulate memories ticket stubs, setlists, memorabilia, media clippings stories of anyone who saw bands at the above venues. If you have any stories of Yes at The Apollo or other bands you have seen there. Link on this site for further details and find what information has been collated so far.

Sure did!

That's a good site. They're also planning to produce a musical based on the bands that played at the Apollo.

Should be interesting.

Oh brotherofmine, you have no idea what you have done to me with this thread - talk about ecstacy and agony! The ecstacy is easy enough to explain. A countless catalogue of gigs at the famous Glasgow Apollo (mostly v.good, some utterly majestic and the occasional bummer) triggering memories of a golden age in the Rock Capital Of The World!!!!!! The agony? Well, that would be the day the music died and they started pulling the place down. Even when it closed we never panicked at that time, because we all thought someone would come in at the last moment to save it for us. It was not to be however, and when the day came and the first bulldozer swept relentlessly and unforgivingly tore down the first bricks, there were many people, including grown men, shedding tears. It was heart wrenching, like being at a funeral of a very close friend. That's how much we loved that dump of a place. And it was a dump - but it was our dump! We loved it and the bands came to play and they loved it! And they all came back to play - again and again!

I remember going to see The Who in 1975 a couple of years after the place changed its name from Greens Playhouse to Glasgow Apollo. Pete Townshend said "I hear they've done the place up." A big roar. "Well, it's still a f*****g dump!" A stunned silence! "Don't worry, it's still the best f******g gig on the circuit!" The roar of approval which greeted that remark almost negated the need for any demolition squads, as we thought the place would collapse there and then!

I can't believe how emotional I can get 22 years after it's demise, but there was a thread on here a couple of months ago about a venue closing (somewhere in the States, I think I posted on it) and I felt every bit of pain felt by that poster!

It goes without saying that my favourite night at the Apollo would have to be YES in 1977, Monday 7th November to be exact. My 1st YES gig, a memory to be treasured over a wonderful catalogue of memories!

There is a very good book about the Apollo, choc full of anecdotes by artists (including a couple by Rick Wakeman) and fans alike. Some of the stories have been embellished over the years, and some are, shall we say, of doubtful origin, but anyone who has ever spent a few gigs in the pit which was the Apollo will read through the book and will say, "Christ, I remember that night!" If you can get a hold of the book, do it and embark on a crazy journey of nostalgia - and laugh - and cry!

"Satellite City" What's that?
In the early 70s Yes played the following venues in Glasgow.

Greens which was later The Apollo (a lot),
Kelvin Hall (twice),
QM Union (supporting Slade),
City Hall (supporting IF)

but I've never heard of Satellite City.

You are correct Brian, Yes never played Satellite City. Satellite City was previously called Apollo (disco) and prior to that Clouds (obviously because of the height, being above the Apollo Theatre). That was in the days when we referred to such venues as 'discotheques' - the kiddies now refer to them as clubs or nightclubs. I always thought you had to be a member to gain entry to a club?
Brian, you and I (and others on here) are getting old! But not old enough for the pipe and slippers!

I have lots of great memories of the Apollo - not just Yes.
Queuing down Renfield St for the 75 tour.
I was at that Stones gig too, Anne.
King Crimson with Bruford, Genesis 73 on the second night - the first night was cancelled due to the equipment being live, queuing up for Wings tickets and not getting them, Todd Rundgren's Utopia, Alice Cooper, Sabbath with Badger as support, Rick Wakeman, ..and so many others.

I remember my last gig at the Apollo…
Ricks ‘silent nights’ tour. Due to poor ticket sales they were only going to have thee ‘crowd’ use the stalls on the ground floor. I remember paying like 5 quid for my ticket only to see them been given away for free on the streets outside the Apollo. Rick was good but not brillaint – well he was good, but his band… yikes!! No thanks!
Clair Hamill was supporting . she pulls out a classical guitar and someone shout shouts out “gives us the clap”!! which to us YES fans makes perfect sense - but I think she nearly went screaming back to her dressing room at the though of what she interpreted the request to be for!!!
Anyway after all my great gigs in there, including Ricks good ones, it was a sad end to the love affair with the Apollo.
However the carling academy has quit a lot of similarities and if you squint your eyes when you are inside you can be almost transported back in time…
it’s a sort of ‘Drama’ of Glasgow venues, to the Apollo’s “Going for the One”

My first gig was at the Apollo (I grew up in East Kilbride). It was Camel on the Moonmadness tour and was just fantastic. Sometime back then I saw Dory Previn on what I think was her only UK tour, also at the Apollo, also wonderful.

My first Yes concert there was the CTTE/TFTO/Roundabout show in 1973. Saw one other Yes show there too. Truly a magical venue - seems like I spent most of my formative youth at the Green's/Apollo. List of bands I saw in chronological order as follows (such great memories):

Green's Playhouse

Fairport Convention, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Humble Pie, ELP, Groundhogs, King Crimson, Led Zeppelin, Wishbone Ash, Genesis, Status Quo

Apollo

Rolling Stones, Moody Blues, Wishbone Ash, Roxy Music, YES, Beck Bogart Appice, Bad Company, Traffic, Roxy Music, Jethro Tull, Bad Company, Caravan, YES, Man, Roxy Music, The Who, Supertramp, RICK WAKEMAN, Rolling Stones, Elton John, Dr Hook, Genesis, Be-Bop Deluxe, Thin Lizzy, Todd Rundgren, Jethro Tull, Lynyrd Skynyrd

were you at the BC gig when they played three encores, then the house lights came on, half the audience went home, but the other half refused to leave and kept screaming for them to come back on, - so the band came back on?
Paul Rogers said "we have nothing more to play".
After various shouts from the audience - someone shouted "Play it ALL again" - and they played another 3 numbers from the set they already played.
I know they did "All Right Now" twice - but I can't remember the others.
Of course if you were in the half that went home, you will have no idea what I am talking about. :-)
