Whether a musician is good or bad, the best or the worst, is purely relative, personal and inaccurate.

But this time I might as well agree with you! :-D

Good one, nitrus!

It would be sweet to have some more consensus on this.

understood - and also i'm reassured that i'm not out too far on a limb on this...

don't get me wrong, I don't mean to accuse Alan of causing global warming...but rising sea levels, volatile weather and melting glaciers...they might all be a reaction to the middle section of Ritual.

According to Henry Potts site Steve Nardelli has luanched THE ONE TV and has 4 Syn projects in the works. It also seems Chris and Nardelli might be best buddies again. This man has really performed against all odds and adversity.
Now that's an inconvenient truth for some Yesfans here.

Do you mean drummer Alan White (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_White_(Yes_drummer)), or drummer Alan White (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_White_(Oasis_drummer))?

Brian

The one who liberated Yes out of the science experiments and into the revealing science.

The one whose pure heart comes through in every drum hit.

The one who transformed (and completed) Yes in a matter of hours.

The one with the killer timbales, the timpani, the weird stretchy toms, and the triangle.

The one who rocked the vinyl off the grooves of Six Wives of Henry the 8th.

Not the Oasis dude ;)

If anyone doubts that, just watch the QPR show from 1975 or his Union Tour performance. Truly amazing. Just these two examples prove it all.

I know of someone (personally) who was selling a CD that Alan played on in her gift shop (she had an affiliation with the band that Alan guested with). The cover had a "featuring Alan White on drums" sticker. She said Mick Fleetwood came in the store and was buying something else and saw the CD on the counter. He said "Alan White played on this? Then I've got to have it! Alan White is the greatest drummer in rock and roll."
This was in the last 5 or 6 years.

Subsequently I have heard from other sources that have heard Mick Fleetwood say the same thing.

So, Mick Fleetwood said that????
Good for him. Proves he knows his drummers!
Another great musician, namely the maestro Mr. Rick Wakeman said in his 'Out There' interview that there were only two drummers who understood Prog music and were clearly the best of them. Namely Mr. Tony Fernandez (well, he would say that, and of course he's correct) and Mr. Alan White.
What more need be said?

theone.tv isn't exactly much to get excited about yet and, while Nardelli talks of multiple The Syn projects, none of them have yet to appear, so I don't expect anyone will be serving pie until there's rather more evidence of something.

As for Nardelli and Squire's relationship, I don't know, but I've not heard anything's changed.

here's my recollection of Alan with the Syn:

I saw the Syn in Somerville, MA. I had tickets about 18 rows back on the opposite side of Chris, sitting with a buddy of mine.

Right before the show began, someone up front offered us to swap seats with him and his wife because his wife didn't want to sit so close. They were in the first row in front of Chris.

I must say, I really don't like the Syn's songs all that much, and so I had to zone in completely on what Chris and Alan were playing, so as not to go insane. ;)

There was one song where the band wasn't sure exactly how the song was supposed to end...and they were kind of heading for a train-wreck ending of sorts...but just in the nick of time Alan sewed it all up with the most professional song-ending "save" I have ever witnessed, a sweet drum fill ending on a choked cymbal crash...he is such a pro.

What a amazing thing to see up close.

At the end of the show I loudly yelled and cheered for Alan, -he actually heard me, looked in my direction and kind of smiled. That was freaking awesome I gotta say.

Alan White is a great drummer no doubt, but the true inconvenient truth is that Bill Bruford is far superior both generally in musical terms and for Yes in particular.

As for Ricks assessment of Tony Fernandez…

He is pedestrian and unimaginative. Listen to the Bruford and White’s contribution to ‘Six Wives' ( and in White’s case Criminal record) and Barney James contributions 'Journey', 'Arthur', and the live performance released on DVD of the Oz tour, on which Barney is superb, TF is all that is wrong with Ricks music.

I would have replied to this thread a few days ago if I'd realized it was about something other than global warming! The only inconvenient truth about Alan's drumming is that he gives Neil Peart and the late great John Bonham a run for their money.

...As if it's inconvenient to list those 3 guys as your favorite drummers! :winknudge

Rick has said that TF is the only drummer who can play one of the complex pieces from Six Wives properly.

Convenient truthiness- I agree, saw Alan Nov. 30 and shook his hand again; Brufie's here May 10.
If I bug Wakey on this in an hour on his radio show............
well, I like the Gentle Giant drummers more than Fernandez.

Your perrogative Brother!! ( why do I sound like Bobby Brown??)

Alan is undeniable in his talent...

And I love him. Why? his drive and commitment.

But I can name better "drummers."

Nothing wrong with that, really.

Hmmmmm. Is that why Rick chooses Tony to accompany him?????
Well, I guess Rick can't be much of a musician then. Not if he doesn't know his drummers!
(sarcasm, with good humour, intended)
Sorry, but I believe Rick's assessment ahead of yours.

A very real inconvenient truth is that I'd be brilliant if I could play drums 'one tenth' as good as Mr. Tony Fernandez, or Mr. White!

why dose some one have to be better? I know for a fact there is no drummer I like more. Ofcourse most of my favorits are dead. I think Alan and Bill Bruford are both right up there with drumers that are still kicking. But interms of my ears I like Alan more then any one.

And... I think alan would be the firt person to say he is not the "best" drummer.

:appl[1]:
Do you think Alan would mind if I put him second on the list of greatest drummers? Right now I rank only John Bonham above him. Of course, neither was/is a technical virtuoso like the awesome Neil Peart, but both Alan and Bonzo captured a sound, a feeling, a real rock and roll power, that I can't quite place among other drummers...

oh i know what you mean - i would love to be able to pay the drums as well as he does. but that will not me good either!

opinions are like 4ssholes - no one wants anyone elses in their face !

only kidding. :O) xx

Rick shouldn't have to point out that TF is a good drummer. it should speak for it's self, but it doesn't. Alan white doesn't need any promoting, and neither does Bruford. You listen to either of them and you know they are good. I listen to TF and I know he is avarage.

While I think economics play a part in it, I think, Rick is very loyal to the point of actually sacrificing some musical quality. Ashly Holt anyone? he kees using him despite a career of univeral panning.

i rest my case

anyway this is an Alan White thingy so, ... aint he cool??
