Lots of rave reviews here for Yesshows. I have it on vinyl and haven't listened to it in years. Must.... revisit....

Ahh what an amazing album. It is the only time we got to hear Time and a Word performed live before Keys I came out. As fot THE Gates...Long Live Tolstoy!!!

Always loved Yesshows. Still do.

And...I still hope for an expanded edition with a few more nuggets from 76 through 79...yes, including things that didn't show up on The Word Is Live....like On The Silent Wings of Freedom and Turn of the Century...

Now this is a darn good idea!

Yesshows version of Ritual has to be the best live performance of Rock Bass ever recorded! Me and my buddy used to listen to it religously every Friday after work back in the mid 80's in a ritual-like fashion. We'd put it on right after our local station, KFOG, would do their 'weekend salute' by playing 'Smoke Two Joints' by The Toys (and we always did!). :smksml:

Chris Squire was the prime mover behind the album. The best thing for me was that it has live Moraz performances on it. When it came out there were some complaints that it was too bass heavy and that the mix wasn't good enough but it never bothered me. It also fell in that dark period when Yes was still in the process of re-inventing itsself for the eighties and there it was like a shining light in the middle of darkness. Something to give me a fix before Yes rose like a Phoenix yet again.

While being one of my favourite Yes albums, it has its problems.
Squire was left to his own devices to mix the album, and to get back at
Jon for leaving the band, he practically mixed out most of his percussion
and rhythm guitar playing on the 76 stuff. A fair comparison would be
the Roosevelt stadium NJ radio broadcast (frequently weeded in our
trading room). It makes Yesshows pale by comparison.

The same can be said for the weed of the BBC broadcast of the Wembley stuff
from 78. It makes the Yesshows mixes sound hollow and bass-heavy.

This being said, I firmly believe that Yesshows (as a companion to
Yessongs) is proof-positive that Yes could really kick some A$$ playing live!

it has a nice selection of material for a two-record set... and some of the songs it contains are more powerful than their studio counterparts... GFTO, TAAW, DKTW, Ritual...

I actually like it - it makes it more original and definitely more primal - the intention, I believe. I didn't like Yesshows when I first heard it, mainly because of the audio quality. But I've warmed up to it over the years, and Ritual from this album is definitely my favourite live recording of that epic.

Clair Bros did a fantastic job on that, still one of the best live recorded albums of any band, the bass and drums are so full. Oh and a bit of trivia, what did Jon say right before Ritual started, "dont point that b.... in my face..cmon" what was the B word?

The transcription from Forgotten Yesterdays (what would we do without it?)

before 'Ritual'

(transcribed by : Pete Whipple)

Jon Anderson : Thank you. Thank you. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank some people who helped us put on the show. Um..Clair Brothers Sound System. We have some marvelous people over here. Sean and Neil, who've helped us with the sound. And then the red, blue, green, orange, and purple corner. We have the people who put on what you see, the colors, the lights, lasers. Michael Tate and Adam Wildi. That's some very very fine people. Oh! Some very people fine people who actually put the whole thing together, they're collectively known as the best road crew in the business back here. Yeah! Don't put that funk in my face. C'mon. Here's a song which we did for 'Topographic Oceans'. It's getting like a soul show now. This thing called 'Ritual'. Last, last but not least, we gotta thank you all very much for coming this evening and for making it all happen.

i think i heard a band member say somewhere that its actually jon grunting on ritual.

he says "dont put that funk in my face" during the intro.

i agree that gates and ritual are great on here, but the later mqaterial suffers from thin sound quality. as someone else said, the sound on the radio versions of these shows is better.

could be Jon, but doesn't sound like him... it also seems to be somewhat synchronised to the drums, but then the entire band is playing drums in that part... if I get to meet Alan again I must ask this! the drums are fed through a synth in that part, a bit like ELP's Toccata... love those experimental solos!

This version of Ritual reminds me of the movie "altered states". Primal and other-worldly. Best version...but the Japanese CD version I have from circa 90 has the song cut in half! I have to agree - much like Pink Floyd's Echoes or Led Zeppelin's live version of Dazed And Confused (or if you really want to go back in time: the full length version of In A Gadda Da Vida), it's an epic journey through another musical realm. The bookends are fairly normal rock songs which have middle sections that go off into something altogether different. I have that Japanese disc too - and I hated that they split up Ritual! So much so that I bought another release of Yesshows that didn't.

I have always liked Yesshows, but have also found a few things bother me:

- It's too short
- Ritual is cut (I understand the limitations of LP format, but on CD they had no excuses, and initially they kept the break and I too have the Japanese version like cjreyes, and the break is annoying to say the least)
- What's with the 20min [sic] audience noise between Ritual and Wonderous Stories? Another song would have fitted in nicely...
- I only say YES for the first time in 2003, so I had no way of experiencing a YES show back in 75-79, when this was recorded, but it bothers me a LOT, especially after knowing how great the shows were during that period, that they did not pack it up with more material - and they had shedloads to choose from!!! It is simply a crime that gems such asFuture Times/Rejoice were left out undocumented until The Word Is Live... At times like these I say to myself "Thank God for the bootleggers!"...

;-)

Nevertheless, it is a great album, and one I enjoy very much, but I still have this feeling that it's incomplete...

I'd give it 3.5 / 5 (I'd give YesSongs 5 / 5)

I thought it should have been a triple like Yessongs... the band's songs are long enough, and they took material from enough tours... a triple album, easy... and a great bookend to Yessongs...

I was going to say, the original Japanese CD from '90 (which I also have) merely replicated the LP... nice we finally got to hear Ritual uncut after two decades with the later US release... I should add, the Japanese LP-style CD has Ritual as a single track....

I felt they were maybe padding that last side... that is quite a long transition... as is the fadeout of GoD...

Absolutely! I always turn to that one when I want the perfect GoD. I think it is more brutal than the studio version and you can hear Jon panting for breath before he starts to sing. I think they were all going for it real hard...

i've heard Rick is pretty dismissive of the whole album. shame . i guess it's cos he only plays on some of the tracks and didn't like 'go-cart' or 'Relayer' stuff.

I've heard the version of 'Gates' with the orchestra, but it was pretty reduntdent and the tempo was way to slow for me. it had no bite.

Yesshows;this one has passion, and energy and excitement. I like the bass sound - the album was produced by C.R.E.S.

but in addition to the tracks already on it, i would have loved that version of 'Starship Trooper' from the Wembly '79 shows ( the BBC recording) and maybe Future Times/rejoice or Silent wings of freedom. that would have made it even better...

But as we have the whole of the Wembley '79 show to enjoy for free why would anyone want to pay for it? I'm really happy to say I was at that show :0)

The Yes boot scene delivers the goods way better than the official Yes machine. The "official bootlegs" are our only chance of getting hold of pristine material from back in the day if only the band would sanction it & get something moving. If only stealth mikes and mini-disc recorders were around in 1973.........

I remember the Japanese 2CD import (with Ritual in 2 Parts) sounding quite good.

But, the 94 remaster sounds great too, a little better perhaps. And the 2 halves of Ritual are connected, as stated before.

I see copies of it around here cheap from time to time...if anyone wants one, lemme know and I'll snag it for ya!

To be honest "YESShows" is an album that I have been quite surprised in the last 10 years to find that not many YES fans think is all that great. To me it is the greatest live album they ever did. The choice of songs was perfect. It is just a stunning album. It is what really won me over as a YES fan for life. It IS THE album that showcases what YES was and is. How anyone can listen to 'Gates' on "YESShows" and not come away completely mind-blown is beyond me. That side 2 of the "YESShows" live album ('The Gates Of Delirium' "YESShows" version for those CD only folks) is, in my opinion, probably one of YES's top 3 greatest moments in their history.

"YESSongs" is a great live album, but it is no "YESShows". "YESSongs" just lets you know what is coming when you get to "YESShows".

glass house...did you get this on CD?
I only have vinyl and I'd like to get it on CD for my son.
It has to be my favorite live album for YES.
Purple Wolfhound...that intro before Ritual is to me the ultimate. When I first heard this, I knew right then why I told everyone that YES is my favorite band. I so wished I had been there for that moment. After hearing that bit, I started to buy bootleg's, just so I could get an extra word from Jon between songs. I remember on the Drama tour when Steve Howe's guitar kicked out. The band just filled in without hesitation and it was a moment. I remember when Jon forgot the words on the Ladder tour and again the band kicked in. These are live moments to cherish.
A live YES show is to be a part of.
And the YESSHOWS album is one great capture of it.

GAWD you are so so right on! I listen to RELAYER again tonight. To think that YES hasn't recieved a special Nobel Price for insanely brilliant artistry in music. THis version is INTENSE! They simply wipe the floor with the greatest in the genre. And that's saying alot. Wow what a group, they were.

I do like PARALLELS, but not insanely yet when I hear it Live I can't help but be moved. THough of course I rather listen to my all time favorite (the get your ars moving) SIBERIAN KHATRU, especially after FIREBIRD.

Again THE WHALE is another I can pass on but when I listen to it I still get some goose bumps.

RITUAL simply blows my mind any and everytime.

WONDEROUS STORIES is purely euphoric, period.

I haven't heard either this or Yessongs in a long time actually. However, I remember liking this better. These days I'm not so sure which one I would lean towards but possibly Yessongs. I think Yesshows has over all better sound as in sound quality but I think Yessongs has more raw energy and improvisation. Yessongs has the advantage of having more music on it but Yesshows seems to cover more ground. Both are important documents from Yes's first ten years or so.

The thing I don't like so much about Yesshows is similiar to my one gripe with Seconds OUt by Genesis. On that Genesis live album they only performed one album from their most recent(which was "afterglow"). The same thing with Yesshows but in this case the only one was "don't kill the whale." I think Yesshows would have been better if had more Tormato tracks from it. It's also too bad that "awaken" is mysteriously absent. That said I really like the live version of "parallels" and actually prefer it to the studio version because of the use of synth on it instead of church organ. That's just a personal preference though.

Like some others on here I also can't understand why this album is not so appreciated by fans. I think it's mainly because of the version of Ritual and how it was split up on the original vinyl release and also on my cassette copy I had as a teen. It's still a great live album though.
