This has bugged me since vinyl release: why did Wakeman use Hammond for that first massive pipe organ break and then switch to some other instrument that made a proper big pipe organ sound??
And what did he play for the second?

The song suffers from the wimpy Hammond approximation and is not like the studio version; was he not ready with the proper one until the second iteration or what?

You talking about live versions, I guess, right Bruce? Dunno why....and since they used tape for the 2nd big break, why didn't they use tape for the first break too? I have no idear. Unless they wanted it to be an even more dynamic shift in concert...perhaps that's why?

Live, yes; I suspected what you say- just e-mailed Wakey about it but he probably won't repond.
I figured Mellotron could not do it and that regal he was given, maybe later, is too small- any info on that portable organ a fan made him?

it's defo a taped chruch organ for the second art of the segment.

here's a thing; for years i assumed they had an orchestrra play the firebird intro and that the players just sort of sat there for the rest of the concert!
