I was just wondering if anybody here are vegetarians or vegans. Or are you just a food eater. I'm a vegetarian for animal purposes. There are 2 purposes to be vegetarian or vegan. 1. Health reasons. 2. You don't think it's right to kill animals for food. I'm for number 2. What about you?

There are very few things that I won't eat.

I'm assuming that means you aren't a vegetarian. Being a vegetarian, I know there are vegetarians that are very persuassive about it. They think their vegetarians, SO YOU SHOULD BE TOO. I'm not that kind of Vegetarian. I'm fine with others eating meat and stuff but heres something I am aginst. Factory Farming!
Factory farms are (too me) horrible. They pack all the animals together in little spaces, they de-beak chickens so they don't give the other chickens soars and bruises, and they treat them like they are toys. I once saw a video about a factory farm. It was disgusting. I'm not exagerating this, they took the female chicks for they needed them, then they actually poured hundreds of little baby male chicks into a big dumpster so they would just be there forever. Now what do you say about that! (I want to note that I am not trying to persuade anybody to do anything they don't want to but I'm just telling the truth) They milk cows with machines that pretty much milk them and then they get sent to be killed for meat products. The reason for many vegans is that. For example, if they buy some organic milk, they know the next step for that cow.:horse: To me that seems a little bit extreme to not have anything because you know what happens after they milk the cow. I try to have organic things when ever I can, but sometimes there really isn't a choice so I just have the non-organic stuff.

Although I do eat meat, my taste for it has become less and less over the years. I can barely stand to eat red meat anymore unless it's disguised as a hamburger or meatballs or something. I'm turning off to pork too, mostly because I'm finding the thought of such intelligent creatures going through the farming and slaughter process very unappealing.

I do eat quite a bit of chicken, just because it's so easily available. However, I prefer fish to chicken.

I know that I will always eat fish. But I would like to completely do away with the consumption of all land creatures, eventually.

I was just reading about the laws of being able to say things like "cage free" and "grass fed" and "free range." Basically, it's all a big lie.

Although chickens may be cage free, all that means is that they are not physically in a cage. However, they are still all crammed together, on top of one another, in horribly dark, smelly places. "Grass fed": as long as the animal is fed grass, they can still be penned up. If you want to learn more, you can go to any number of websites. This one links to the Humane Farming Association. http://www.hfa.org/about/index.html It's a very upsetting site, so if you don't want to know - don't go there.

I will never be a vegan. I love my milk, eggs and cheese way to much. But I would love to have my own hen house one day and get my own eggs.

Vegetarian here. I guess it's a philosophical issue for me. Plus, I made a public commitment a few years ago to repsect life in all its forms, among other commitments. And I take them very seriously because it allows me to operate within...oh this is boring stuff!

I'm not vegetarian, but I do like to go organic whenever possible. A few years ago we got a young Highland bull, intending to keep him as a pet. He later got too dangerous, so we ended up eating him; for about 2 years we didn't have to buy beef from a grocery store. Even now, we sometimes go to a local butcher instead of buying commercially.

Our chickens, which we started keeping about 3 years ago, have fared better. We keep them as pets, and haven't had to buy eggs in over a year. Organic eggs taste much better than factory-farmed eggs, they're fresher, and there's a certain pride in knowing your pets did it for you... :D

I was a vegetarian once, purely on moral grounds, i.e. I didn't like the idea of animals suffering; I still don't. But I love fry-ups, burgers etc and I guess age just brings a general loosening of moral standards anyway. Well, that's my excuse.

As long as it doesn't try to make friends with me, I'll eat it!

That's exactly how I feel!

I know we need those things for our bodies, but the thing that REALLY makes me mad is, there's soy or tofu products made healthier and to be the same thing! And we STILL kill the animals, in fear that the soy stuff tastes bad. I find that (not really, but a bit) sickning. I don't like passing judgement but I really feel everybody in the world should be vegetarians. I don't get this one other thing. The thread said somebody shot 4 dolphins. Are the people at our good old slaughter houses any better than them. Some might say we do it in a more humain way or It's the food chain. Who cares if it's part of the food chain!?! If there actually IS a way to not kill an animal and still eat and get the protein we need... WHY AREN'T WE DOING IT?!?!?!?!?!?!

Animals are very good at fending for themselves, YDT*.

If we stopped eating them, then agri-businessmen (formally known as 'farmers') would stop breeding them. Numbers are really not a problem.

People who haven't got past the primitive stage of eating corpses are the problem.

It's life! LIFE! The whole ecosystem would be WAY different if we never ate animals! We never gave them a chance to go on their own. They lived in harmony before WE arrived and screwed up their whole habitat. Now we just need to let them be like they were. (how ever that is)

I eat a mainly veg diet, highly motivated by health. I eat fish though, lots of fish.

The people with the highest body fat ratio in the world are the Eskimos. It is a different type of fat though than we experience in the West. They eat laods of fish and and loads of animals such as seals and walruses that also only eat fish. They are very, very healthy.

The best and healthiest meat in the world to eat therefore is Eskimo. I'll bet there are omnivorous folk here that would try Eskimo.

It'll come you know, cannibalism will be socially accepted in a generation or two.

Meat free since '93. Including no marshmallows, no frosted Pop Tarts, no Hostess (hidden animal ingredients). I have incorporated this into in my Spiritual commitment to live more gently on the planet, in keeping with my philosophy of kindness to animals.

While some of what I cut out from the above quote does not apply to me, I can live and let live. My husband has met me half way. He'll at least try soy/tofu (and sometimes likes it), opt to leave out all meat substitutes, or add his own after splitting the dish with me. In turn I will cook meat for him, but he usually does that on his own so I don't have to (he's such a sweetie!).

Lately I've been trying to cook with more tofu. It is very delicate, and it makes a tasty meat substitute as it takes on the flavor of whatever you cook it with (how much garlic do we have?).

Meat substitute products have come a long way in the 14 years that I've been a vegetarian, and the variety has greatly increased. That said, some products are a lot better than others. Morningstar Farms are the best hot dogs (oh don't pooh-pooh, what could possibly be worse than a *real* hot dog?!?!?!), while *all* soy bologna SUX!!!

I eat almost everything, including meat. Yes, less red meat these days. But I don't stick to any one set thing.

Well at least we know the Frenchman wasn't a vegetarian, or else why did he have that cow to pitch over the castle? ;)

Why? Think about all the poor animals who only have to die because you are hungry...

I stopped eating red meat in 1979. I had just eaten a rib-eye steak, and my body screamed, "NO!"

I've never wanted any since.

Other animal products have come and gone over the years. Chicken left for a while, then came back, then left again . . . fish left shortly after that, then seafood . . . also milk as a beverage.

For some time I was strictly lacto-ovo vegetarian, not solely because of moral or health issues per se, but because something inside me said it was the right thing to do.

Lately, I've begun to eat fish, chicken, seafood again, in a response to health problems I've had, and it seems to be helping. Sometimes my body just screams for it, and that has to be OK.

I still enjoy good veggie meals - LOVE veggie bacon and sausage, and Tofurky . . .

Basically, I just listen to my body, and try to eat what it wants. It has naturally gravitated over the years to lower animals, and vegetables. I have no illusions that the meats I'm eating today will always stay in my diet . . . they seem to come and go over the years . . . but I don't believe I'll ever eat red meats again - it's been almost 30 years, and I don't miss them a bit!
