This song has been a favorite of mine for a long time, but I was listening to it in the car and man, Steve just totally makes it. Quiet acoustic at the beginning, bouncing off of Jon's lines in an almost rubato way. Sensitive, impressionistic stuff in the break complimenting Rick's piano. Building... building... building... Then "the change" and those soaring, joyous, jubilant lines after the statue comes to life. Whoa!
And back to the acoustic again at the end. An emotional trip. I still cry every time I hear this song. I'm okay with that. When I need my therapy, I put this song on.
I think this is my favorite performance by Steve on a shorter Yessong (as opposed to an epic) and maybe my favorite of all time. He is all over the place, doing all those Steve things that I love.

Do you have Tales From Yesterday? On which Steve is singled out because it's just him and annie haslam on vocals. Get this just for this track alone.

I agree! I would recommend checking out the GFTO tour live
version on the Glasgow '77 DVD. Steve reworked the classical
outro for electric guitar with volume pedal and echo. Masterful!

Absolutely one of Steve's and the band's masterpieces.
And(forgive me for repeating myself!I am wont to do this...LOL)one of the vast, forgotten, hidden classic catalogue...
How many other bands have songs like this?!How many other songs ARE there like this?Very, very, VERY few...IF any!
...is my wager...

I believe TotC is not only one of Yes' most beautiful songs, but one of the most beautiful songs done by anyone anywhere... the lyrics, the music, the production - it's got it all...
Hed - agreed on the '77 live version... I've not always liked all their electric versions of acoustic parts live (AYAI, as they used to play it, for example), but the electric outro just perfectly retains the mood of the song instead of compromising it... it's that plaintive, sustained electric sound that's so haunting throughout the second half of the song... brilliant!

TOTC is, next to Awaken, my 2nd favorite Yes song.
It is so incredibly beautiful!

I didn't like TOTC that much until I heard Steve's solo version. When I heard it, all of a sudden it made sense to me.

This will always be one of my favourite tracks from my most favourite album. maybe its the diversity of music on GFTO that makes it such a stand out piece of work.
TOTC is maybe Steves greatest hour. The song structure and content is quite sublime.

It's one of the many songs by Yes that one must listen to a number of times to discover the different nuances of instrumental prowess.
