Why does the Tormato cover look like it does?...I know the answer and it has to do with Steve Howe. Do you know the answer?

I know how the tomato ended up up on the cover because that's what Rick Wakeman thought about the cover.

Great. only I thought it was Steve Howe. He hated the pic so he threw a tomato at it. also if you look at each one's face..they are all looking into a different direction...this is where the band was headed -apart!

Ah, here we go again..... Tormato is a freaking great YES album!!!
But I really think the tomato thing was Hipgnosis' idea.... not Steve or Rick throwing a tomato at it.
Steve's idea was to name the album "Tor", hence the photo of the Yes Tor on the cover. He was unhappy that the name got changed to the foolish play on words of "Tormato".

So he got pissed off and threw a tomato at the cover. ;)

It sounded old and tired to me in 1978; it still does. I bought 'Drama' when it came out and thought it sounded more like Yes than 'Tormato' did, which was a bit confusing at the time. I also bought 'Song of Seven' in the same year and thought "Jesus, no wonder they asked him to leave the band!" Mind you, a friend of mine went to see the tour and said Anderson played a blinder; the gig he was going to play in Liverpool was cancelled due to poor ticket sales, draw your own conclusions.I couldn't, no concert.

Hello Ian,
I realise you are new here... but I am not going to get into the Tormato/Drama/etc debate discussion as we have been through it ad nauseum.
I will say that I think the title song "Song of Seven" is possibly the single greatest song Jon has ever done on his own and I like it far better than anything on Drama. The other truly great song on that album is "Some Are Born", which Jon did bring to the Tormato sessions... and is better than some of the songs on that album, IMO. Most of the remainder of the SOS album I don't much care for either.
By the way, I don't believe the band "asked him to leave".
I thought he chose to not participate any longer because they couldn't agree on anything and the relationships were strained.
And I will say that I saw the Drama Tour and I saw Jon's Animation Tour the following year. I MUCH prefered Jon's tour. Jon and his band, with David Sancious on keyboards, did two extended YES medleys in their set and they were far more convincing and inspiring to my ears as YES music than the classic YES songs that the Drama band played with Horn singing them.
Now look what you've made me do.... enter into the Drama debate all over again!! :winknudge
(Sorry JL, I know we buried the Drama hatchet along time ago!)
I'm outta here!!!
Peace and welcome to Yesfans, Ian!

Saw the Jon Anderson tour and also the Yes tour and there were more people at the Yes gigs that the Anderson tour sadly. That might have been down to the fact that Yes and Jon Anderson both had albums out near each other and toured at roughly the same time. Song Of Seven was a great album and obviously Jon used songs that were earmarked for the next Yes album. Nothin wrong with thos songs to be honest just that as a brand Yes was bigger than Jon Anderson.
I saw two gigs of the Drama tour and I thought musically that they were really good. Both gigs(Deeside and Manchester) however were very erratic in the vocal department. To be fair to Trevor Horn it was a huge mountain to climb and on the Drama material he did extremely well but the Anderson fans didn't really give him a chance on the older material. He actually was a lot better than people might think but did come in for some serious cat calling at times. Geoff Downes told me it was really bad in London. Personally I prefer Drama to Tormato and think it is a more traditional sounding Yes album. Then again wasn't the experimentation on Tormato what Yes were all about...Pushing things forward musically. I find it a lot easier to listen to Tormato these days than I did in 1978. Perhaps I am more forgiving or open to new ideas . The again perhaps not. Maybe I just didn't give it enough time.
They were still great live on the tenth anniversary(Tormato) tour but I still prefer Drama. I don't compare the Drama album to Song Of Seven as it is a completely different beast being a solo album. To compare the two albums would be silly because they are both great albums just different :headset:

Please forgive a noob if he's opened up old wounds, it wasn't my intention to start a flame war on his first day of posting!
You have your opinion and I respect it. As for Anderson leaving/getting kicked out, I wasn't there at band conferences, so fair enough. There's enough discord in the world without two people who love the same band having an argument about them. See you at the next Yes tour!
Wakeman and Anderson both left at the same point. In fact after meeting each other in a paris cafe they decided that the direction Yes were going in particularly with the then producer Roy Thomas Baker wasn't to their liking and they both decided to leave the band at that moment. Neither were fired:headset:

From Wikipedia. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tormato)
Rick Wakeman himself has said that while Tormato indeed had potential, Yes never got the best out of some of the material, while Steve Howe admitted that Yes were unsure of themselves musically at the time.
The photographs taken by Hipgnosis for the album cover were seen as so unimpressive that Rick Wakeman, in frustration, threw a tomato at the pictures. The cover and title were adjusted accordingly.
My favorites from the album are Future Times and Release, Release. :headset:

There are some great songs on the Tormato album, but it's not a great album as there are also some songs which, shall we say, most definitely come into the dubious category.

There is no way you would rather look at mushy tomatoes than a tight butt!
The other interesting fact is that the band photo was actually taken in a park in London, and not on Yes Tor at all. Chris (or someone) forgot to bring his black jacket, and as the whole band where supposed to be wearing black jackets, he borrowed one. His name on the jacket was added later

I'm still not buying the idea that they changed the name and cover because Rick threw food at it....!!
Does anyone really think that Steve and Jon would have allowed the change, for that reason?
And it would have been a much more respectable and reasonable, if not somewhat boring cover without the tomato....

I lurve the band cover photo from Tormato! I see really nothing wrong with the front cover either, but maybe it's because I'm used to Hipgnosis' Floyd covers. :winknudge But I can't stand the GFTO cover! It's just not up to par with the music inside.

The Tormato cover was a totally bad idea. Overall I liked the album but of course the rockers were my favorites. Regarding Song Of Seven:
"God He wears a blue T-shirt too
With God inscribed Heaven on both sides."
I'm not a religious nut, but I love that line and think it's one of the best ones he ever wrote. Think about what he's really saying. I have to say that after G.O.D. though I had to work at getting back into Yes as usual. Oddly enough I was never a big GFTO fan but I have to admit even that cover was a lot better than Tormato. It seemed to be a bit disrespectful of the band to me.
