granted, there's a lot of instruments on the orchestrated magnification, but a couple surprises, in my opinion: a while back a couple of us commented here that we're pretty sure we hear banjo on the title track, and now i'm just wondering if that's a mandolin at the beginning of inthepresenceof? sounds almost neapolitan. who would be playing it? just curious, & thanks in advance to you experts/specialists...

I believe both are correct, there is a banjo on the title track and a mandolin played on ITTPO. With the last few Yes albums, whatever solo work the guys were doing just prior to recording tends to inform the Yes music a bit and at the time Steve had just done his all acoustic intstrumental album "Natural Timbre."

It was a Mandola. Larger than a mandolin.

I do not remember ever recording any banjo on the whole album. Steve had 39 guitars in the studio... and 2 pedal steel guitars, but... alas... no banjo.

However, if you want banjo, I just mixed Steve Martin's new album, and he plays the banjo on it.
