View Full Version : Sound Quality on Re-issues...

For some reason I was waiting (for what?) to get Yessongs and found it recently at a used cd store. I asked my fiance "Why would anyone return this??". When I came home, I realized why someone would return it...it's not the Rhino re-issue....
Usually, I would've noticed this, but I think that I had a few too many at the nearby bar.
I do enjoy good sound quality so I feel like I have made a huge mistake.
Now the question..do I return the disc?? Is the Rhino re-issue much better? Please be honest, I can handle it.
Thanks.

There is no Rhino reissue of Yessongs. I don't recall there being any sound quality issues with the Atlantic remaster.

Yeah, what he said.

Rhino only did the studio efforts.

I've always wondered why my atlantic Yessongs CD was such lo-fi.....After listening to the vinyl of it this question grew bigger....The Vinyl I have sounds much better....

It's as though they remastered to CD from Vinyl and not the original multitrack....

While Rhino's never released it, Atlantic has released it twice. Perhaps you've got the original, and not the remaster?

The only ways I know of telling them apart are: 1) the original was in a double-wide box, the remaster is in a slim-pack, and 2) the dates will be different ... the original Yessongs CD came out in the late eighties, while the remaster was issued 1994. It'll also tell who remastered it on the back of that 94 issue too.

I used to have that original, non-remastered one. I don't have it anymore, and that's probably got more to do with how lame the packaging was than any problem with the sound.

The original vinyl issue never sounded all that clear in the first place, so I don't know how much justice can be done to that album anyway.

I have both the vinyl and the Atlantic remaster (I also bought it twice thinking the second one was a Rhino remaster arghhh). The vinyl was definitley much better than any of the CDs out there.

For Yessongs, the vinyl is definitely better than the CDs....'tis true.

But...IMO the original Atlantic 2CD set (in the larger jewel case) is better than the Atlantic from 94. Mastered by Barry Diament, and very well. If you think it sounds a little dead, just jack up the bass and treble a bit.

I've just realized how odd it looks when Sharp posts over CybrKhatru ;)

Maybe it's time to make that "Best Yes on CD" thread I've been thinking about for some time....

I like the reverse better! As if Naima is looking down at Raquel. :D

For the record (haha) I only have the vinyl version of Yessongs. At the time it was a price issue rather than a sound quality one, but looks as if I lucked out!

Catfight!
I've always thought the Japanese remaster HDCD of Yessongs was the best sounding CD. But I can't even remember how my original sounded, after I dumped it when the Gastwirt came out.
I've finally learned that 'remastered' doesn't always mean better, unfortunately.

I do have the Gastwirt version. No Rhino remaster, eh? Silly me. Thanks a lot, folks.

Larry...

I thought the HDCD was better for quite a long time. Then I found one of the original Atlantics and compared. The only thing the HDCD has going for it are the increased treble and bass.

When I cranked the bass and treble on my original Atlantic, voila! It sounded just like the HDCD, only a little warmer.

That said...the vinyl is still the best way to go...all IMO of course! ;)
