Anyone know much about this band? The snippets I've heard sound interesting, "heavy alternative" sounding with some proggy influences.

I think they're touring in Australia early this year.

They're about the biggest band in the UK at the moment. Sold out Wembley Stadium (90,000) in about 40 mins and added a second date.

They are influenced by many different types of music, but the nod to Queen is strong. Lots of other influences including film scores, classical, dance, pop, hard rock, folk and at times country even. Okay, maybe not country, but who needs country.

The band is a three piece: Matt Bellamy (guitars, vox, keyboards) is the driving force in terms of writing, directing and in many ways playing/stage performance. He's pretty much one of the few guitar hopes that have emerged from these shores of late. Not a great technical player (in the Vai sense of the word) but a keen experimentor. He puts theramins into his guitars and MIDI touch pads as well as using on-board Z-Vex effects to create really wild sounds. The support comes from a great bassist and a pretty good drummer. But it's Bellamy that steals the show I think.

They've a few albums now.

Showbiz -- the debut (I love Cave, Muscle Musuem to bits)
Origins Of Symmetry -- turned a bit more poppy (still love songs like Plug in baby)
Sing for Absolution -- this is where I parted ways as it was a bit too poppy for me
Black Holes and Revelations -- a lot more experimental and yes, maybe even proggy. But I think it's a modern band with a heavy rhythm section and a liking for harmonies/hystrionics.

That's off the top of my head, so apologies for any errors.

Well worth checking out though.

I'll have to disagree. "Knights Of Cydonia" is the song of 2006! But maybe my tastes are too obvious!

Certainly, "Black Holes.." is one of my top 2 releases of the year.

A great live band - if you can get hold of the boot DVD of Muse live at Glastonbury 2004, you'll see what I mean.

The first time I heard them was by accident - I just happened to be flicking through the channels & they were playing 'Unintended' from Showbiz. I thought it was one of the best/saddest songs I'd ever heard. I don't own every album, but I heard Knights of Cydonia on the radio the other day & loved it immediately.

what is more thrilling? MUSE exploding onstage or the sight of severalThousandStrongMOSH PIT explode on cue...the lads kicked off "time is running out"+ the place went bananas! ditto 4 "plug in baby" + "knights of cydonia"----i've seen a moshpit from the front to back on U2's slane castle show but to to see it in the flesh(and be a part of it on the fringes hahahaha) is amazing---mrsSkychaser was enthralled after having to bear some ranty aussie band---the light show(think zooTV crossed with bowie's serious moonlightTour---was breathtaking---my highlight???

for cryin' out loud-they went +played "city of delusion"*,matt strappin on a spanish guitar+flamencoing 4 all his worth( have the lads from wolfmother seen this?)---strings+mariachi band on tape or somesuch though they had some dude playing keys stage left---maybe theirs a job 4 wakey if our band can't "get it together"-they are wakey's favourite band!

good mixed crowd,young+old...sydney awash with newly bought MUSE t-shirts...world domination pending?? all i'll say is ,with minimum banter, they pull out 1 amazing dynamic THRILLING song after another(matt even does the megaphone+petals in the pocket trick during "feeling good"--

if you can catch opening the new wembleyStadium in june, take it..

best LIVE act in world....

*hadn't bothered checking the recent setlists as they didn't do it last year+
i thought the missing orchestra would be a problem

btw SUPERMASSIVE ROCKED THE HOUSE WITH PROJECTED ROBOTS DANCING

Well, what can I add to Peter's reveiw? Except to say that it was effing brilliant! The friend I went with, an old progger from way back, thought it was the best live gig he'd seen in decades!

See them if you can - can't recommend them too highly.

pedro skychaser

what's the buzz?

spent day telling guys @ work(showing them the youTube clips),the TNT courier(who is a hifi freak)+the dude @ liquorLand about the gig lastnight(he'd gone + seen TOOL)+promising sammyMacTheRockkid i'd take him next time---is a buzz, the buzz, word of mouth that no amount of promotion+advertising can buy(often claimed to be fault of YES management)

if you write thrilling songs+play thrilling concerts round world ,people will come...

pedro skychaser

MUSE Vs YES.....

A Sober Assessment.

obviously mattBellamy(bellamy genius, the t-shirts said) can't play as many notes per bar as steve, more like the edge who masters effects...yet there's not a boring second in these songs, they are full of sweeping drama, dynamic shifts+agile drumming/bass...

obviously mattB can't play as many arppegios than rick, though he comes closer...having trained as classical pianist...and had augmented synths anyway...

obviously mattB can't sing with the soaring ease of jon,yet his operatic delivery is awesome, less freddieMercury as is often said, but more davidBowie from such sweeping songs as "wild as the wind"...superMassive is pure bowie to my ears and less franzFerdinand as is quoted...

so you have a daring, widescreen trio with a singing, guitar, keys virtuoso---
and their choice of albumCover art is none too shabby either--stormThorgerson did last couple...they invited 16 different artists for OriginOfSymmetry...

so 4 albums in ,a MAIN SEQUENCE already,no sign of entropy...

timeIsRunningout, superMassive, starlight, bliss, plug InBaby, knights had instant pandemonium, the girls next to us laughed their guts up to knights +pretended to ride horses...prog+humour? yes it is possible

will watch Hullabaloo DVD from paris today, now having seem in the flesh,

still amazing in cold, hard light of day...

OH MY GOD HAVE JUST SEEN AD 4 WEMBLEY SHOWS

In the recent ClassicRock magazine(with percy plant on cover) is a full page ad for MUSE's 2 wembley arena shows...and my gawd we aussies know how to build sports arenas*(even not on time or under budget, hahaha),what an arena with a VAST spanning arc holding up roofs...gone are the victorian era twin towers but you londoners now have a state of the art stadium...like the telstra stadium in sydney...so rush out and snap up remaining tix for 2nd show.....16,17/07/07

*aussie construction company, multiplex or some such

gee, just rewatched the glastonbury TIRO,wow,oh to be in england, on a dry+dusty summer's night,st george flags flying overhead,,8000 moshPitters, singing the verses+mr bellamy pirouetting(sic) a little shuffle in a wide arc as he plays the guitar, like a clockwork character only to arrive @ the microphone the VERY SPLIT SECOND he has to launch into the final chorus....ooooooooooo they don't teach that at music school!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I saw Muse at the tail end of last year, and I have to say it was one of the most amazing concerts I've ever been to! When I first picked 'Black holes and revelations' up last year (a few days before its official release) I wasn't initially keen but it's really grown on me to the point where it's probably my favorite now. It definitely has a strong selection of tracks, and the productions sumptuously wonderful! Most people I know tend to say 'origin of symmetry' is the best, but I find it a bit OTT (amazing for a yes fan). I'd perhaps pick 'Black holes and revelations' up and work from there. If not for anything else than for the last track, Knights of Cydonia!

I have a few tracks that were put onto my PC a while back.
I can't say that I'm impressed with those. Nor the new single, which is being played all the time over here.
BUT, I KNOW I am missing something here because people whose taste I judge are waxing lyrical about the band.

It may be because their music on cd suffer from too much compression.

See my thread about this problem, (with a Muse song as an example) here (http://www.yesfans.com/showthread.php?t=36465).

Muse are really good musicians, they have their own personality and they know how to write great songs, but their music doesn't breath enough on cd. Live, it's waaayyy better!

Muse is like Radiohead to me; they are a band that I feel I should like more than I actually do.

I have "Black Holes & Revelations" and "Absolution", and neither of them do much for me. When individual songs come up randomly on shuffle play, then I generally like them, but I haven't been able to sit and listen to either album straight-through, in its entirety...

personally I think the studio albums are very much lacking!

I believe every progressive rock fan should see them headline just once

trust me it is well worth the $35 ticket~!

catch them before the Genesis syndrome hits them and tickets shoot up!

Which Roundabout?

We have been doing our homework for this concert, and have had all their albums on a continuous loop for the last 3 weeks. Mini Roundabout can now sing far more Muse songs than could be reasonably expected for a 7 year old, to add to his repetoire of Van der Graaf Generator and King Crimson.

Is anyone else going to Wembley?

2 days to go........i can almost feel, smell+hear the scaffolding going up, the rough shouts of men as they construct the stage...will there be new songs?, surprise covers???, surprise guests???

the world awaits.....

Which Roundabout?
06-18-2007, 08:04 AM
We're back! It was 'hairs up on the back of the neck' stuff!!!!

Wembley is incredible - even 100 miles back up in the stratosphere (as we were), everyone was up on their feet and jumping around. The crowd ranged from 7 (literally) to 70, but Mini Roundabout commented "Sometimes I could hear the tunes, but not the music", which tells you all you need to know about big stadium sound mixes.

The set included huge glowing inflatable balls set in the stands behind the stage, and remembering previous shows I thought "When they let them loose, they'll crush folk!!" Needless to say, they stayed put, and crowd-crushing was avoided - the ones they DID let loose rather disappointingly looked the size of beach balls (from our seats). Bit of a Father Ted moment!

So...when's the next one?

I'm just reading this thread now. I had no idea these guys are so big. I have Black Holes and Revelations on CD, which I have because I used it to match the colors for a T-shirt with the image. I work for their merchandise company and I've done some of their color separations (no designs tho). I really like the music. I may have to go see them at MSG...

DEM APPLES are about right cereB---absolution is possibly the most fully realised album in 20 years (okComputer did have a couple of duff songs)..."origin of Symmetry" is amazing...so much energy+beauty...blackHoles is a bit less focussed....origin had the static buzzy noises linking the songs+ absolution just had the sublime highs+lows of the running order...:xolicon42:

Not diggin' Radiohead as much. Although I do have 'Kid A' and 'Hail to the Thief'. Music is too monotonous for me. Along the same lines, I like Porcupine Tree much better and I'm still aggravated that they have never really broken big here in the U.S. I was listening to Stupid Dream the other day and there is literally four tracks on that disc that could have been hits with the right record company push.

These guys have got me sold. I'm listening to 'Black Holes' right now and love it, although I dig 'Absolution' and the first one a bit more.

These fellas are among a small gang of modern neo-prog groups that have maintained their integrity and vision while amassing decent crowds and having variable degrees of commercial success.

King's X
Tea Party
Porcupine Tree
Muse

and a few others that allude me at the moment.
