TFTO is my favourite Yes album. Favourite piece of music ever. I finally got round to buying the remastered album on CD.
Back home, pop in disc one.
What's this ? Instead of starting straight in with the "Dawn of Light" vocal, there's some ethereal keyboards and ocean effects. Have these always been the start of the song, or have they have been added in the remix ? Has my vinyl system been so poor that I never heard it before ?
I tell you, I'm in shock. It's like discovering one of your own children has blue eyes when you always thought they were green.
What other aural revelations await me ?
Haven't found time to play the whole CD through yet, so I may be in for more surprises.
Excuse me, I have to go and lie down in a darkened room...

Hi Movedfast!
Surprise! this edition of TFTO features a longer version of Revealing Science of God. We had heard rumors that Revealing was initially around 28 (?!) minutes....this version is 22 or so. Interesting, eh?
I'm guessing that this intro was on the master tape but never used until now, although a part of it DID turn up on the In a Word box set.

Hi movedfast,
That's the only change in the 4 original album tracks that I'm aware of. Do you have the Rhino version with the two studio run-throughs? You'll find more surprises there! Giants Under The Sun is even wilder and more experimental than the original. Dance of the Dawn is very interesting, it lets us in on the tail end of the creative process in writing this song.
There is a fantastic rocking section near the end of Dance of the Dawn that I love but was cut from the final version. Listen for it at the 18:30 mark just before Rick's climactic keyboard solo. If not for vinyl, it would've been part of the final version.
Tales has been my favorite piece of music ever, ever since it came out. The last few years I'm leaning towards Close To The Edge, but I think I'll just call it a tie!

I like that new intro. They used it in concert and had me baffled but pleasantly surprised!

Yeah, the In a Word version is 20 seconds shorter than the Rhino remaster--the In a Word intro is about 1:37 while the Rhino remaster intro is about 1:57.

I just bought the remastered Tales. This was my first buy of the Rhino Yes remasters. I hadn't planned on getting any of them at first, as I was waiting for the SACD/DVD-A format war to end. By the time it ended with the death of both combatants, I had essentially lost interest in buying Yes albums for the umpteenth time.
Well, Borders currently has select CDs and DVDs on sale for 50% off. There was Tales, and I thought oh what the hell, I'll get it.
And... why did I wait so long? I think this is far and away the best sounding version of it I've ever heard. The aforementioned lead-in to Revealing is cool, and overall the mix is cleaner. I'm wondering, the windchimes that lead out The Ancient, were they always there and I just never heard them, or were they added for this version? They were great. I'm now listening to Ritual and am in anticipation of the two bonus tracks.
Hopefully Borders will put the rest of the Yes remasters into the sale bin soon!

Let's hope so!
Not sure about your wind chime question. Maybe someone else will chime in.
Tales is tops.

sweeet!
i want to listen to!

You are correct sir. The original version of the track that is on all the other CDs starts with a gong; the Hirsch/Inglot remaster replaces this with a slow fade-in of what sounds to me the same sound (wind? ocean?) that opens the new RSOG followed by the wind chimes.

SACD/DVD-A didn't neccesarily offer the ultimate in reproduction because although the sampling theory was correct, the players just weren't that great. You have to spend megabucks on CD to get that to sound any good, and the high end companies did little with SACD/DVD-A.
Buying your Yes albums for the umpteenth time? Well, Fragile and Magnification made it to DVD-A and that was it! I had Fragile on 2 LPs (still have one) and have 5 CD/DVD-A versions. How many times can I be expected to buy the same thing? Can't I get an upgrade at a fraction of the cost?
Anyway, the library of SACD/DVD-A releases never amounted to more than half a shelf.

I recently received this and IMHO the Rhino remaster is a must if you are a Tales fan. The studio run-throughs are gems.
One must listen to them with headphones, someone was having fun mixing around 14:30 of DotD and 12:00 of Giants (panning back and forth) Also, there is a really cool bass (?) effect in the right output in Giants at 13:37. I went to sleep listening to my iPod on shuffle the first time I actually heard this and I woke up during the aforementioned part in Giants, it was like my brain was saying WAKE UP something isn't quite the way it has been  . It's trippy and I love it! :headset:

Gotta agree. I love stuff like these studio run-throughs.
I think Tales is one of the better Rhinos, particularly with the extended intro to Revealing and the different beginning to Ancient.
