This has got to be my favorite live album!
It is simply a masterpiece.
Does anyone have the remastered edition & if so,
how does it compare to the original album?
Thanks,
Randy

Yessongs was remastered in 1994....
and then there was a Japanese remaster in the late 90s.
I still like the first Atlantic CD edition better, believe it or not! Barry Diament did a great job with what tapes he had.

Yesterday I sent an e-mail to Rhino and suggested a remastered release with proper artwork. I pointed out that Yessongs was one of the biggest selling album in Yes' history, and that at least some of the original multitracks were found a few years ago. (Actually, i would like to see Yessongs remixed, cause i think that the sound quality does not make justice to great performances. Some sort of "Yessongs Deluxe Edition" would be great.)
But then, Rhino didn't even release remastered "Big Generator"...

I remember being 14 and getting YESSONGS and TIME AND A WORD for Christmas - 4 new YES albums at once; life was good!
Anyway the remastered version I have sounds great. But as many folks say; in someways you can't beat vynil. However the newer remastered CD is light years better than the original CD I had in the 90's. The old CD sounded like crap.

I agree. The 1994 Joe Gastwirt remaster sounds fine to me.
There's really no need for a remastered Yessongs from Rhino unless they're going to add bonus tracks or do an expanded and remixed deluxe version like The Who did with Live At Leeds.

Actually Matt, Diament has since denied he did the remastering of the original CD. It's still the best version out there IMO.

Well, whomever did it did a very good job.
I know a lot of people complain that this sounds muddy...true, it does sound maybe overly mid-rangey in places.
If you fall into this category, try cranking up the bass and treble..makes it come alive and sound more balanced. I just did this in the car with "Yours Is No Disgrace". Sounds GREAT!
So, maybe it's no great tragedy if there's not a remaster on it.

Muddy is right, Matt.
And I'm still not a big fan of Howe's extra solo noodling on YIND.
And yes, I do know how to play it.

if your talking about the 2cd version i bought in 1990, i wouldnt say it sounds muddy. i'd say it sounds "too accurate". every time i listened to it on headphones, i was so distracted/annoyed by the hall echo/reverb that would cause a slapback/delay in the left channel that id have to shut it off & go run for cover! seriously an unpleasant listen. my sister has the remastered version & that sounds much better, but ive been spinning my OG vinyl 3LP a lot lately & that can NOT be beat. sounds like a perfectly clear audience capture, even if the Bass bottom is a bit low for my tastes. the only things missing from the vinyl are being seated next to a bunch of friendly strangers jamming out to the tunes as much as myself, the smell of stale marijuana & tobacco smoke, and the line at the bathroom during intermission...not to mention the sticky beer-goop on my shoes from the arena floor

I got the original Atlantic today and it's the best version so far. Compared to Gastwrit and the horrible japanese HDCD the original sounds more detailed, clear and balanced.
Actually, it sounds like it's been "remastered". :beerchugr:
...But i'm still waiting for a remix.
I never got the original CD as I thought it sounded muddy and flat.
I have the '94 Gastwirt remaster and it sounds fine to me.
I'm happy with the CD I ended up getting.
A great album. I remember having to save up the money, because in 1980 (when I bought it), $12 for a triple album was a lot of money.

Here's a vote for the Japanese HDCD edition in terms of sound quality. I wish it wasn't three CDs, though--that's taking authenticity just a little too far. :D Still, the miniature version of the original LP's packaging is cool.
I, too, would like to see a deluxe/expanded edition of Yessongs. Problem is, they already included a version every song that was played on the '71/72 tours, didn't they? I doubt Atlantic/Rhino would release a 3 or 4 cd edition with different performances of the same songs, but I guess you never know. A remix would be great, but you know that the record company is never going to pony up for the cost of doing that. Plus, weren't at least some of the Yessongs tracks spliced together from different performances? That was a common practice at the time, and it's a telltale sign when the venues aren't listed in the liner notes.

I think an expanded Yessongs with additional and alternate performances might be good, but what I'd really like to see is an official live album from the Fragile tour.
It's such a tease to have Bill Bruford only on a couple of Yessongs' tracks; it's too bad there's so very little officially released live material from that era.

Honestly I'm not interested in new remasters of the previously released live albums. I want the uncut, undubbed full shows as part of an official bootleg series.

I could definitely get on board with that. I'm kind of tired of the rash of live albums from the recent tours. I would love to have some vintage shows, particularly circa 1971.
There should be a full live album out there with Bruford on it, IMO.
Alan White's great, but Bill Bruford will always be the man as far as Yes drummers go for me.

I recently got the newest version of Yessongs from Amazon and tried to compare it to my original cd version and I dont think I can tell the difference. I have to take them in and out of the cd player and my computer treats them as the same cd's and burns one over the other which (makes me suspicious) preventing me from haveing them separate so I can't bounce back and forth easier to hear the difference. At first I thought I could tell but I can't. :cool2:
I have given up on it until someone comes forth with a new lost tapes version from a reliable source before I purchase another edition.
I have heard that Genesis's Seconds Out was remastered in a special way and that maybe Yessongs can get the same treatment somehow remastereing tracks seperatly and then putting them together digitally or whatever. I have that album and it sounds pretty good.

On this one the original Atlantic CDs sound the best, but I might be biased here, because I love the sound of the vinyl album :)

If you compare the original Atlantic version to the latest japanese mini you should hear the difference - it's so obvious. The original album wasn't very good sounding, but the Japanese and Gastwrit's remasters actually made it sound sound worse.
Rhino should definitely have done Yessongs.

If you mean the latest version of Seconds Out, it's not remastered. It's remixed and it sounds wonderful.

I played the heck out of the LP and admit that I am dissapointed with the CD'S.
To be fair I would have to listen to the LP's again but I dont have a turntable anymore.
I guess Remix is what this needs and lets have more from the Fragile tour. I dont have the last live release and now it is out of print but just like the Box Set I got for 20 dollars I will get it from Amazons other dealers for less.
I just wish Yes had some better management so they could get this stuff out the right way first time out.
