Does anyone know why such a beautiful album like Olias ends with the line "in it all.......To the DEVIL Take!"???
Seems horribly negative to me... Has anyone ever read what JON himself says about this line?
A lot of us have discussed it and no one really knows... and many are concerned...
Anyone hear JON's take on this???

Hold come a day dream
Ask a flower to kneel
When you pray to the runner
Spurn all ye kindle
And cradle his sweet pleasure
As you look farther and farther
Beyond him, beyond him, beyond him
Spurn all ye kindle
And cradle his sweet pleasure
In it all to the devil take
In it all to the devil take
Well, that's all the lyrics...I can honestly say I've never thought much about these lyrics. Now that I think about it, this does seem to be glorifying satan. Who is the runner?
Since OLIAS is a story - perhaps this is a character's perspective more than Jon's. My CD doesn't have the whole story in it, and the part it does have is too small to read.

Thanks for writing out the exact lyrics at that spot.
It's always bugged me that those lines were in there... sure would like to know what it REALLY means...

Maybe Jon's possessed?
Second thoughts, I doubt it. He can play the harp and has the voice of an angel.
I don't actually like Olias myself. I much prefer Fish Out Of Water.

in the realm of metaphysics there is the thought that all is Maya or illusion. When we are attached to things we become imprisoned by our own desires. If we "spurn" what we kindle we let go of these desires and then the "devil" can have them because we are not attached anymore. A lofty concept indeed. then again maybe he was just high....................

Illusion,
I like the way you think.
"Jon was high! Problem solved."
Wouldn't put it past him.:D

A. Jon ALWAYS breaks rules of grammar when looking for 'word sounds for the sake of the sound, not the meaning'.
B. Please tell me where Satan is glorified in this passage??
The mention of "The Evil One " does not imply Glory--it implies acknowledgement.
The Bible spends numerous passages telling us many aspects of Satan's doings and his place in the sheme of things. Does the fact that the majority of scripture in Daniel, Revelation, Isaiah, and ALL the gospel accounts point to a POSOTIVE outcome in the battle over light and dark--BUT!!!!!--seem to give us undue detail and attention(at times) to the Dark One???
I do not claim to know----just a thought!

What does it mean? I'm not sure. I didn't say that the song glorified satan. The word SEEMS is the important word. To me, it seems to be. I didn't say it definitely does. I have no idea what Jon's intent may or may not have been.

you guys are funny. i wouldnt worry about it. if you are looking for someone who comes across without a lot of satanic feeling or negativity, jon your guy! he's quite on the light side! sometimes a bit too much for my taste!
i think its a great line and a great way to end a great album. one thing anybody into jons lyrics knows is that they are very open-ended, so there can be many interpretations (or they can just be sounds like many on olias). if you interpret this line as glorifying 'the devil' thats your interpretation and thats fine (and if he meant it that way thats fine with me too).
to me it feels more along the lines of what Devotee said, of letting go and letting the 'devil' take all that one has come to be attached to, or all that one doesnt need when moving on, transcending... etc... something along those lines.
i like how there is a loud chord to emphasize this line after he sings it. it has a certain finality, yet its cool that it kind of leaves you wondering, leaves things open. i think its a perfect ending to the album.
on to Hell!

I've been listening to Olias for years - never really thought about those lyrics. What do they mean? Not certain, but I still love this album. On to hell indeed! I don't take this too seriously. Especially since I'm agnostic.
