View Full Version : Tales versus Bells
Awakened by the Gates

I have been trying to get some Yes music played on our local radio. One of the DJs has agreed to play some Yes and Rick Wakeman. Hopefully, 'The Revealing Science Of God'!
Last week he played side one of 'Tubular Bells' and though it was great to hear it on radio I couldn't help but think how repetitive it is and how it really pales in comparison to 'Tales'. Yet, more people know of it than of 'Tales'.
'Tubular Bells' has its appeal - catchy, hypnotic - but 'Tales' is so much more rewarding in its complexity. Though it is also not without its own catchiness.
I often listen to 'Tales' complete while on the computer - I never tire of any of it.

Well, Tubular Bells has The Exorcist going for it...which, as a theme song, has scarred me for life....
Tales is much more adventurous (sp) than Tubular Bells...IMHO
And it doesn't scare the CRAP out of me every time I hear it...:lmao:

I remember last fall we had a VERY lengthy analysis of Tales. I wonder if those posts are still there. I'm too tired to check maybe tomorrow I will find them and if so I will post a link. Tales is so off the charts for me I would have to write pages and pages. 'Catchy and hypnotic' doesn't cut it for me. Funny you put this message up now. I was just telling someone in a thread on 'John Coltrane' that there IS another LP I would put in the same category as Tales. And I just thought of it. I don't know why I never made this connection before. Tales to me has nothing whatsoever to do with airtime. It is a personal statement and it's content transcends mass media distribution...
'Illusions' by Carlos Santana was released in 1974. It is so well planned out thematically it reminds me of Tales. But the musical similarity is remote. Illusions explores the mystical and spiritual sides of jazz, whereas Tales takes up similar themes with a totally different progressive sound. Where Tales is lofty and among the clouds, Illusions is firmly rooted in the elements of earth, fire, and water. And air too. I will have to check it out again.
Ooops sorry, I didn't really talk about T.B. I have actually never heard it, only how famous it is. So I will make the effort. But Tales is mighty and grand.
