Just been to Bill Bruford solo performance at Drummer Live 2006.
I really didn't know what to expect from this show, but I knew I had to attend, as just to immerse myself in his drumming was going to be sheer pleasure.
'Drummer Live 2006' is a drums and percussion exhibition in a huge exhibition hall complex called ExCel in Docklands area in London.
There were several performance slots in the main hall, and Bill was on from 3pm for 45 minutes set.
I guess the main purpose of this set was educational: showcasing his various styles with some explanations of his layout of his drum kit, his love for odd metres, how drummer can contribute to the arrangement in a group, etc. And demonstrations on 'drum solos' in different styles.
He was as usual...very relaxed and concentrated at the same time, and seemed really enjoy playing, especially when he played different metre over the backing tracks and they coincide after several cycles...which causes me pleasure also... He also demonstrated the pitch layout of the toms, his are not arranged one directional from left to right, but centre, left, right, left right...and he began to play ascending and descending patterns and their variations, and kept going for a while, and suddenly stopped saying that, 'Oh, I forgot that you were there... I was having fun...'
There were video cameras from the top and aiming at his feet, and they were projected on the screen behind him.
