I know there is an 'animation option' on the DVD but before I brought it back to the store to order a new one, I forgot to check it!
I'm curious, cause my DVD still haven't arrived yet...
I wondered: 'Are these Roger Dean-animations ???'
*hoping someone can answer the quesion*
:D Cheers!!! :D

In an othewise stellar release, I found the animations a bit disappointing. There were no Roger Dean inspired sections, which I thought was somewhat puzzling. (Of course, the fact that they finally tour with a full orchestra and don't play the Firebird Suite was puzzling too, but that's another issue.) During 'Gates,' there was this bizarre abstract segment that was almost cartoonish. On the plus side, there was a cool segment that was based on the DVD cover, which could have frankly been longer.

I wasn’t too impressed with the animations, either. They were more of a distraction than anything. I agree about the GOD segment, too – it reminded me of something from the Heavy Metal movie or a punk rock video. It didn’t look right at all. The only one I thought was halfway decent was the opening computer animation – that was probably the closest thing to a Deanesque landscape.
Peace,
Phil

Damn! I should've animated some floating rocks for GoD. After all, nothing says "war" quite like floating rocks.
A guy tries to do something unique and different in the Yes idiom and instantly he's slammed. I'll be in the corner with Billy and Trevor.
Bob
PS. I wouldn't call starving children and bloodied soldiers "cartoonish". But I'm weird.

Yes fans are a tough crowd, aren't they Bob. Sorry about the negative feedback.
I for one watched the DVD once without the animations and once with. I must say, those landscape shots were beautiful. I especially like the snow covered landscape the best.

Thanks, man. I was kinda just joking above. I honestly understand why folks would want more Dean stuff, but my role in the band was to present a bit of a departure from Dean's work - while maintaining the spirit of the music. With Gates, I thought I'd bring some Gerald Scarfe and anime influence to Yes, and I think we kinda pulled it off. I really have to commend Joe & Tom for their work on the Gates war sequence. They knocked that out in a less than a month and in my opinion - it's the highlight of the visuals.
I heard the band might be projecting some of the animations during this year's tour. THAT would be cool to see.

By the way - there's an "animation" during Don't Go (the live performance - not the video) of a little yellow car driving across the screen... I'd like to publicly say: I had nothing to do with that.

YES fans are not exactly open to change, even though the band is constantly in flux.
I haven’t seen the DVD, but so far I think you have done a great job in capturing the spacey/surreal/science fiction feel of Dean’s landscapes in a contemporary way.
Did you design the Rhino box set? Are you involved in the stage and/or lighting design? Projections would be cool.
I do think it would be really awesome to travel through Dean’s landscapes rendered in 3D. Perhaps for the next DVD?

HAHAA, I have noted that Bob, thanks. I am so looking forward to it. I am finally buying a DVD player. I already have a couple of DVDs just nothing to play them on, but it is coming soon.
I have seen floating rocks in war sequences before. Most recently in a Babylon 5 space sequence.

Thanks so much, dude.
I didn't do the Rhino box set, though I actually submitted a cover for it involving 3D versions of the Dean/Olias sail ships. Rhino ultimately wanted Roger because of the classic/retro content of the discs.
3D environments - I experimented with 3D environments for the DVD. Lots of interesting scenes. I especially like the CttE green water fly-through and the GLED intro piece. You should check out the DVD... if you can find it.
Thanks again, man!

It's a great dvd, Bob. You mentioned they might project those images on this tour. Do you have any other insight as to what the stage set might be like?

The stage... Nah. No info. I'm currently out of the loop.

I don't like animations during concerts myself, and I haven't chose to watch them yet (I prefer to watch Steve do the impossible on guitar!), so I can't really comment.
I'd like to thank Bob on the Overture animation at the start of the concert, which is utterly brilliant. The DVD and Mag covers are top-notch - I still have the EP wallpaper on my desktop. And the documentary is a nice extra on the DVD.
So I'd like to publicly thank Bob on his work for Yes. Roger who? And what is an Interdimensional Reality Machine? Has Jon gone loopy? Whatever it is, it looks pretty cool. And if you see Jon and Co, make sure you tell them about the site!

It doesn't have to be ALL roger Dean ALL the time.
I watched Yessymphonic this past weekend with a friend who is not a huge Yeshead. He had not seen it before. He was blown away (as well he should be) by the performance. He also found that the animations enhanced the experience.
I agree entirely. We have to see these things with open minds and not remain bound to RD artwork. Personally, I liked the Hipgnosis stuff, too.

I found your animations to be inspired Bob.
I love what Billy and Trevor have added to the YES legacy.
And if you are in their ranks, it is a proud place.
But I think you are closer to the Classic YES camp than Billy or Trevor, and I enjoyed your artistry greatly.
I wish I had seen this thread sooner: hope you read this!
Phantasmic work on the highest level. Thank you!
