Great poll, but the Yessongs version is missing!
As such I have yet to vote.
My favourite is the studio version, but it must be said I don't like the song. It seems to just go on and on. I find it boring.
Any version of 'You and I' are great! I was in a Freshman in High School when it was released. In love with being young and the magic of life and ready to adventure into the future unknown. And then came CTTE and everything I felt was realized in their music. 'You and I' will always have deep emotional relevence for me. A Great song like this simply has to played - to be the best!

A week went by and now it's July... I will always love the studio version of this song. Of course Eddie Offord reached an apex when he mastered this album. Quite an achievement. But I am still curious why Rick's final piano flourish seems week and distant? I thought it should shout out at you. I enjoy seeing it performed live when I see them. Jon gets control of this song and still makes it sound clear. I think the UNION tour Steve went nuts on the pedal steel guitar. I never saw him reach such dizzying heights on the thing.>JOE

I voted for the Keys to Ascension version (especially the middle part), although I did not see the new DVD at this moment and I remember in concert it was really great with the orchestra. One of my all time favorite songs!

Original is the best.
I love the YesYears version. Trevor loved that song and it really shows in that version.

1978---Wembley London England---recorded by the good old B.B.C. and transmitted for the second time in about 1989. (I taped it all ---- perfection).
Some of the best live YES stuff ever, from this broadcast.
Cheers.

I just had to vote for the original version. It's good to see some voted for the Yessongs version, it was a tough choice for me between the two.

I vote for two versions, ok it's not fair, but neither is YES not being in the Rock and Roll HAll of Fame. Hmmm, until Yes is in it;s the Rock & Roll Hall of Shame. Now my votes.
The original version and the one from Live in Amsterdam, damn what you hear is exactly what Rick was trying to achieve with his melatron.

I vote for the original version. It's rare to hear studio chatter from them and it always gave me a sense intimacy the moment you hear the harmonics on that 12 string ringing.

Currently my favorite version of AND YOU AND I that doesn't have Rick on it is the version from the Universal Amphitheater in 1997. But my all time favorite version is the original studio version. I love the way the vocals sound on the 'coins and crosses' part in the studio version.

I also wouldn't mind if they did it on the current tour.

Me too - there's lots of really great things about studio work that just don't happen live. This is true in general with all bands, but I think it's particularly true of Yes's work from '70 - '72.
And the 'coins & crosses' part of & You & I, as well as the 'in and around the lake' part of Roundabout are sung much differently. Jon takes the harmony and drowns everyone else right out. I always sing the melody along with the live versions in an attempt to 'fix' 'em for my own ears.

I don't know every version that is named here, but from the versions I do know i like the Keys version best, well....no actually i think the version that I heard on this years Full Circle tour (even though the volume was way to soft) is the best version they ever did!

There’s an old Chinese saying that says glasshopper shourd thlink beflore he tlypes and there is a old Tibetan story about some bloke who asked the old lama about whether he meditated all day and the lama replied by saying but what is there to meditate upon to which the bloke replied okay well so you don’t meditate all the time then so what do you do with all your spare time and the lama replied but when am I never mindfull – so my reply is – glasshopper make note how many posts leqin make this morning all with the same reply ‘non of them’ because this tells us two all important things that are enlightened truths – no Yes song is better or worse than any other Yes song – and – leqin quickly and easily boosted his post count with the least amount of effort and in each case gave the least involved and quickest possible reply towards what are at heart easily answered simple questions that require very little thought and convoluted shenaninigins on his part so far as typing a highly involved and strangely worded reply/post etc may/maynot could/could not or might/might not be concerned.

all to upgrade his posts you remind me of a Fictitious character called Jacob Kell. he was the bad immortal in Highlander endgame who in order to gain more power made friends with various immortals and at dinner when they were all unarmed Jacob would pick up a sword and cut all their head off and take all of there powers (you have to understand the highlander universe to understand the post) anyway the reason I bring it up is there is no reason to double your posts. It is about a discussion of yes not who has the most posts. just like it was about ability not who took the most amount of head (being at the end of the movie his head was chopped of by ducan Macleod of the clan mcloud.)

What - you mean that we are actually meant to discuss Yes and not just post for the sake of it... weird.
Okay well imho the best version of 'And You And I' is.... the one that will appear when Rhino release the CTTE remaster, which is when you get to hear the version that I am listening to now... let me just repeat that - THE VERSION THAT I AM LISTENING TO NOW... and yes your right it hasn't been released yet.
Start a thread about:-
Siberian Khatru
or
The Revealing Science of God
or
Ritual
and I will post the same reply with subtle edits to match each particular songs atributes in its earlier version, which as you know hasn't been released and in the case of 'Ritual' isn't likely to be released either.
I shan't do it just to pump my post count, because Rabin I actually only post what I have to say and at the moment I am saying that the version of 'And You And I' that I prefer is one version you didn't include in your poll because it isn't out yet, but in my humle opinion it is quite exceptional if indeed it is the one that Rhino release.
And - before you even utter the word bootlegger, or imply that I am in some shape or form dishonest or disloyal towards Yes - I have done everything I can to get in touch with Yes and make them aware what is happening and how this CDR that I recieved came into my hands, because I have tried everything I can bar taking out full page adverts in the newspapers and so far its as if the whole universe doesn't want to listen and doesn't care.

it's clean, it's countable, and doesn't meander like all the live versions. Next in line is Symphonic, and I believe it's because of the orchestra and a conductor. No tempo surges....

I voted for the original. The Rhino release of CTTE with the studio run through adds a nice twist to the original as well.
Let me tell you, that song still gives me an "out of body experience" every time I hear it. Steve's guitar work is perfect.

The Yesyears version of course, with Trevor. His guitar solo in it gives me goosebumps when I hear it.

I think the original studio version is sublime. The 12 string is so clear, and I just love Wakeman's synthesizer parts. They bring so much color and depth. I was thrilled with the recent versions I have heard with Rick back, Honolulu 2003 and San Jose 2004. Outsanding! But the original is perfection.

For some reason, I get chills when the very first guitar notes of the song are played during the 1980 MSG show (radio broadcast). I feel like I'm part of the crowd seeing this bizarre incarnation of the band live ... when suddenly they pull out one of their most majestic, and classic, songs -- early in the set -- just to let us know that they're for real. (Of course, the crowd is extremely positive at this show - and that makes it all the more satisfying.)
Oh... and I also love the way Steve's slide just soars over everything else during the main instrumental themes here.
The version they played at Wembley Arena two weeks ago. Breathtaking.

I have to agree with that, it's like "And You And I" has aged like a fine vintage wine, as opposed to aging like ... Keith Richard, for example.

I agree that the rendition at Wembley on 16th June was very special, but my vote has to be for the original - it has never been emulated live and never will be in my opinion. The "Keys to Ascension" version is the best live one currently available - the guitar and keyboards in the middle instrumental passage are spinetingling. Very interesting thread.

I voted for the sturio version. It's always been a magical thing to my ears.
Best live version is the 2004 version by far...getting goosebumps just thinking about it!

I always thought that this would have been a great tune with an orchestra, and Yessymphonic definitely showed that.

Had to vote for the Symphonic version on DVD
When I got this as a present it was the first song I played and I was not disappointed it brought a tear to my glas(wegian) eye
It was everything I had hoped it would be after waiting years (decades) to hear them with an orchestra
I AM GOING TO PLAY IT RIGHT NOW
