During the musical break in the middle of It Can Happen, someone is heard talking a couple of differerent times under the music. Who is the mysterious voice and what is he saying?

Jon stated in a 1985 interview he didn't have a clue. Anybody out there know anything???

Just my belief, jack - i have been curious many times about that voice, and i compared it to Trevor's speaking voice on the YesYears video and to me it seems his speaking voice is pitched identically. Of course - I could be wrong ...

Quantum - you are wrong (and I take great pleasure in saying so). Probably a first. Someone younger than you knowing something you don't?

From alt.music.yes FAQ:

What is the garbled conversation in the middle of "It Can Happen"?

This is John Gielgud speaking in an extract from the play 'The Importance of Being Earnest'.

Illusion, taking pride in correctly someones "mistake" is not what this site is all about. Q stated his opinion, nothing more. I don't know who is right or wrong in this question. All I know is that attacking another forum member will not be tolerated.

Personnaly, I would take anything I read on a.m.y with a grain of salt. Remember, they are the ones that said Trevor Rabin died. They are generally a fountain of mis-information.

No, it was the FAQ. A very good site, actually.

Fine, Nightliner, I understand.

Interesting replies. I always thought it might be Tony Kaye, as, like Q., I was comparing the voice to YesYears. Illusion's answer sounds pretty good. But why didn't Jon Anderson know? He really had no clue--it was a promotional interview for 3 Ships when the question was posed to him...

Go to http://www.bondegezou.demon.co.uk/amy_faq.htm#misc . The site gives loads of information and looks legit. There are boneheads on a.m.y, but I think this guys pretty intelligent.

Yes, a.m.y is rife with wankers, but this guy has always seemed to be pretty legit.

Wow, you sure dig deep, Lynne. That's an older thread.

I would imagine the script of the play is available online and a word search would find the phrases. Sounds like an interesting project.

He said "Come, old boy, you had much better have the thing out at once." And then "Well, that is exactly what dentists always do. Now, go on! Tell me the whole thing."

Hey come on, no stinking rep points for me? I figured it out myself with the help of Windows Media Player and the searchable "The Importance Of Being Earnest" script on the net. :crybby:

Crumbly Crunchies are the best
Look delicious on your vest
Serve them to unwanted guests
Stuff the mattress with the rest.

Sheer poetry in motion!

I'd give you some points for that too, but I need to "spread it around" a little more.

:offtopic: Oopsies!

I think people in this forum should learn to lighten up. Illusion was just saying that it was a rare occasion he knew something that Q didn't. It wasn't meant as an insult, if anything it was a compliment (about how much Q knows things). Nothing in illusion's post suggested any attack.

I have one question, WHY??? Why did Yes decide to put Sir John Geilgud's part in The Importance of Being Earnest? What is its significance?
Another strange thing is that his voice is not on the 35 ann. CD.
By the way, I was way off on what I thought he said...

The best question yet so far!

I've always wondered what that was being said, and why it was there.

One thing that comes to mind is the whole Harrison 60's style ''sitar'' going through the song as it's main hook. It's got a (hate to say it) 'Beatles motif' going through that song (even though The Beatles weren't the first to do it, and at least Harrison actually played the Sitar, not simulated it like his peers too scared to cross the border). If you have a 'Beatles motif', then you kind of have to include 'I Am The Walrus' and it's voice over at the end with King Lear(??? Does my memory serve me right?). Maybe they were just going with that whole psychedelic patch of history by including the Importance Of Being Earnest? I always knew it wasn't a member of Yes, because it sounded like an older man. But what he was saying baffled me until now. The video also has a spoken introduction in another language. I've never known what's being said there either. Probably It Can Happen!!
