Yeah, I promised to buy it after TORMATO, but I bought the limited edition of MAGNIFICATION [no. 09734] instead, which is an awesome album! Such great songs...it's pure magic..................
And today, when I was in Amsterdam, I bought GOING FOR THE ONE and I waited a long time for this moment. I never bought it because I hate the cover of GFTO. It's afwul!!!
But this album............it's pure magic! I love it. And AWAKEN is beautiful. And TURN OF THE CENTURY and WONDEROUS STORIES.......

I remember going there a few times back in my military days. Do they still have those funky hash bars? The Milky Way and The Other Place? Millions of bicycles. And the canals. what a city. As we say here in the states;Dude, you are awesome. I remember back when this album was first released.Man,it was the first brand new freshest Yes album for me. I just got into Yes around 1975. I saw them in 1976. And Going for the One in 1977. And the greatest rock and roll show I have seen anyone do.Period. just imagine seeing Awaken performed live as a newly released piece. turn of the Century.pure magic. And Chris wrote a great rocker:Parallels. This is a MUST have for any YES fan.>JOE

You and Genevive must be in synchronicity - she just bought it too! Must be that time of the year LOL
I agree about the cover - if I'm not mistaken it's another "gem" from Hipgnosis, like Tormato. How those guys could make some really interesting and tasteful covers for other bands and really blow it with Yes is a mystery to me.
Peace,
Phil

I love Going For The One. It is different to anything that they have ever done, mainly because of the lack of keyboards. But this is no bad thing. It's details like this that make every Yes album unique.
I also happen to think that this is the best recording they put out. Fantastic.

I haven't really listened to this song in a long time, minus the Keys albums, and I like the sound on the original album better I think. But I often prefer studio versions to live versions. Hmmmmmmm me too. However, not always. With King Crimson, I almost always prefer the live versions, but with Yes, indeed, they are better studio. Take YOUR MOVE. That studio-song is SUPERB but the one on YESSONGS is afwul!!
Yeah, I love AWAKEN. Never heard it live actually. But WONDEROUS STORIES is my favorite from the album! Such a magistral song.............
This is a great album. I don't think I've heard anything else that has the atmosphere that this album consistently has. When I think of this album, the first sound that springs to mind is the opening guitar chord of Turn of the Century, a sound that instantly has me flying off over the snowy mountains and into the deep blue sky...

This is a great alblum.I remember really being excited to hear it with the return of Wakeman and all. There is something in this alblum for everyone who appreciates the many musical faces of the band. The title track is a scorcher like they have never done before.Turn of the Century is a beautiful song in Anderson offers his most direct lyrics.Just an aside I remember also the reviews for the alblum being luke warm.Already labeling them as has-beens almost.I guess they proved these nay-sayers wrong.

I don't see how anyone can consider this album to have a lack of keyboards. AWAKEN and TURN OF THE CENTURY have some of my favorite Wakeman performances. Especially when the Vevey pipe organ kicks in on the second half of AWAKEN.

As a matter of fact, TURN OF THE CENTURY can't live without Rick's keyboards and of course, AWAKEN owns one of Rick's finest moments. Moments that I missed with Patrick Moraz. He blows the magic into the song. It's a wonderful piece of music that I'll will never forget.

I didn't quite get the no keyboards comment, either. I mean, just LISTEN to the organ intro to Parallels. Goosebumps, man.

Going for the one is to me the #1 yes [ and any music] album.
Def. the choice to take on that deserted isle.

I totally agree, there is a purity and sparkle in GFT1 that other yes albums [and few other bands] only show peices of.
To me GFT1 is the closest thing that exists to a perfect prog rock album [Craftyhands by Happy the Man and CTTE, Fragile and Discipline and beat are all runners up. But Gft1 aims and achieves the Highest.
Can't resisit a chance to plug my favorite.
my 2 cents :)

Going For The One is truly a great album to listen to the first time. The great thing is it only gets better and better with each listen. The guys really fell into a collaborative groove on this one. I think it is brilliant that Rick's organ was recorded over a telephone line.
The album is fresh with an ebb and flow of variety that is utterly captivating.
The cover. Well let's see. The best I can figure it that the naked guy is our young boy from the Yesterdays cover all grown up remembring the Wondrous Stories of his past so that he can Awaken to the Parellels of the Turn of The Century.
My first introductions to Going For The One was on cassette so I listened endlessly trying to learn the lyrics. I love CD's although I must admit there was a certain joy trying to absorb the lyrics without the benefit of them in front of me.
To first time listens. May the joy grow.

I don't think it's the best Yes album ever, but it's certainly one of their best albums ever.

It is one of my favorite albums: Turn of the century, Parallels and Awaken are some of the best songs Yes ever did. There are some very interesting moments of the recording and performance in 1977 of songs from this album on the video YesYears: Steve playing acoustic parts of Turn of the century, the recording of the second voice of Chris during the title track, live perfomance of Wonderous stories (with a fabulous Wakeman) and Going for the one. You must see it.

like w/ tales, relayer and CttE there are a def. minority [ of which i am one ] who hands down see this as their best studio effort.
They were in such a magical space I only wished they had kept recording and writing for another albums worth !

GOING FOR THE ONE is the band's last truly spectacular studio album. I must admit that THE LADDER was almost in the right direction to match this but lacked an amazing epic. It's going to be hard to match something as exquisite as AWAKEN - everything since has fallen short, perhaps in contrast to AWAKEN. MAGNIFICATION came closest to being as wonderful as GOING FOR THE ONE, for me anyway.
Still, I'm glad we have so many varieties of Yes music. Apart from OWNER OF A LONELY HEART, there isn't a single Yes song I don't like to hear. OWNER just doesn't do it for me. Oh, yeah...I forgot the version of I'M DOWN on Yesyears. John just sounds silly trying to rock & roll, and the song is just not right for his voice.
But still, what a great band. So many different styles to choose from. If you're in the mood for long epic heavily progged out stuff you've got CTTE, TALES and RELAYER. Something more 'pop meets prog'? You've got the Rabin era stuff, or even OPEN YOUR EYES. They haven't just given us one flavor.
I'll have a GOING FOR THE ONE, well done, with a diet Pepsi, please!

I'll have to disagree with you regarding the diet Pepsi since I'm a die-hard Coke fan, but ordering a GFTO well done is a bit redundant, isn't it? To my knowledge, GFTO doesn't come any other way.
