Well yesterday I went to a Hasting's in college station, tx and found a copy of Talk for only $4.99. For the longest time I didn't want to get this album because I really hated it but I thought eh for that price I'll get it. Wehn I took it up to the counter the total cost of the cd rang up for $3.78. I thought man it's a good thing I bought this because I'll never find it for that cheap again. When I got it home and played it my opinion of the album changed. I really liked The Calling alot and that is probably my favorite song on here. The other songs are starting to grow on me too and now I think this is album is tied with 90125 for being the best Yes album of the Rabin era albums. I'm listning to it now and am really digging it. And as for the album cover, well it's not Roger dean but I do love it because I love the colors in the Yes letters and love how the cover is plain. I know this wasn't one of the favorite covers by the fans but I love it. Just had to share that I'm really started to get into Talk.

yeah i dig "theCalling"--snappy snare drum sound of alan's-the band really cookin'+plenty of fresh lyrics...lunasia anyone?...darker than ebony...where will you be has a dreamy Raj sound, floating on a kashmiri lake vibe...endless dream has the reach+ambition+beautiful silentSpring section.....gotta say trevR could still add ideas to the mix...as for the cover...YesWestie+organic...a marriage,as it were...

Umm . . . he's letting you know that he thinks you paid way too much . . . evidently mcmerc doesn't have a very high opinion of TALK.
I, on the other hand, feel it's one of their best. I love WHERE WILL YOU BE, STATE OF PLAY, and WALLS (co-writing credit to Roger Hodgeson). The ENDLESS DREAM suite is pretty dang impressive as well.
THE CALLING is one the few Yes songs I can play on a guitar.

I would agree that Talk is the best Rabin Era album. I would love to hear the stuff done live again. I find the boots from the tour are all out of key. The Vocal harmonies are rather off. I think it is Sherwoods vocals that kill me.

"Talk" is a fine album, the end of the Rabin era and a great way to go out.
Take away all the artwork on every Yes album and allow the music to represent the release. "Talk" stands up to alot of the Yes discography.

It should have been a big hit, but too many things were working against it. Had it been released, say, a year earlier, it would have done much better. Also, Rick was supposed to play Keys on it but didn't, I think because of management problems. Too bad.

I'd love to hear the classic line up tackle Endless Dream. I wish they'd swallow their pride (Steve especially) and do their own take on it. ED is a great piece of work, and I bet Rick would do a killer version of the keyboard parts.

I do actually.
Designers Republic, Me Company, and Kleber are some of the most cutting edge design houses in the U.K.
I'd love to create a mock up myself.
Don't get me wrong, I think Roger Dean is a great illustrator, but most of the graphic layouts I've seen literally ruins his work, which is sad.

I finally gave Talk a reasonably serious listen not long ago. They had it at the library, so I checked it out... for a week. In my car, I think it got three listens all the way through. This has replaced my previous method of sitting in a quiet room with headphones, which worked back in school but not anymore, because no room in my house is ever quiet.
Not bad. I can see why many consider this the best of the Rabin-era Yes albums, but come on, there were only three of them. Still, I think I agree. Talk is definitely a step up from either 90125 or Big Generator.

Have you been smoking rolled-up carpets again?
In case you haven't noticed, we get a LOT of Rabin-era songs with Steve Howe! It is Anderson, Wakeman and Squire who should 'swallow their pride' as you say, and play stuff from Drama, Relayer and ABWH.
I sincerely hope this sets the record straight on this issue. My favourite musso may be Wakey, but it is Howe and White who are the real gentlemen in the group, who acknowledge Yes' history and are considerate of their fans.
So much for the "Love is so powerful.... love is everything..." sh*t that Jon Anderson always preaches but never practices...

Talk gets a big  from me
I got Talk the day it came out (the same day I believe that Kurt Cobain offed himself) ... picked it up at a record shop on Chestnut St in Philadelphia after class..
I loved The Calling on first listen .. but for some reason it took me a few years to really appreciate the entire album.. even with seeing them in concert at MSG later that year. It was probably 2-3 years after its release that I really LISTENED to it and said WOW!! Certainly as good as 90125 and far far better than Big Gen.
as for Peter Max's logo .. it's ok ... I do like those rainbow prism things within the booklet

Wow, as I read all of the posts I can see a great cross section of opinions on this album from "I love it" to "I think it is crap". We are a diverse group of fans that have individual tastes and feelings about certain albums. I tend to like Talk (not in the same way I like GFTO)but I do think it is a true Yes album even though Trevor had the high hand on the production and recording of this fine work. I have to come clean on one thing here and that is I am one of the few that think TFTO is overrated and it would have been a masterpiece if it was a single album. I feel it just contains way to much filler and not enough solid music. You may feel that I am out to lunch but hey, that is my real feeling on this album. I do think it is the best album cover that the boys have ever had done though. The one thing that binds us all together is that we all get that same wonderful feeling that is Yes music ,no matter what album you listen to. We are one big happy family and yes there will be different opinions on what we like and dislike. But the thing that ties us all together is our love for the music that is YES

'Endless Dream' has to be one of the all time classics. Worth the album just for that brilliant piece IMHO.
Why care about the art-work? Doesn't the music speak for itself?

oh this is so true. endless dream is definitely one of the classic epics. i'd rank it right after ctte and awaken... the artwork, like so many other of yes's radical departures from what might be expected of them, seems to say: "oh yeah? just watch!"

Talk is an excellent album and I have great fondness for it. I'm sorry it ended up being Trevor's swan song with Yes (and I do like Mr. Howe also, don't drag me into the choosing game). I had the pleasure of seeing it performed live at Red Rocks.
Endless Dream is the great keeper off the album for me. The middle instrumental section goes on a bit too long for my tastes, but it's in that glorious ending that it becomes Yes magic. Trevor's guitar soars, Jon's vocals soar, the band is tight and powerful. I've played that on the car radio for some people that are basically unaware of Yes and it was a jaw dropping moment for them. I literally had one shocked person say, "OMG that's wonderful! Why don't I hear stuff like that on the radio?" And to top it all off, if you haven't heard the Maryland Heights boot of "Dream" then you haven't heard the definitive version, IMHO. On the first listen I had goose bumps. ;)

That's right - Maryland Heights is great. The album was definitely on the "cold" side for me - the songs were well crafted, but lacked emotion/immediacy (to me). Performed live, these were wonderful, esp. Endless Dream, which I found interesting, but not moving, before that.

Yeah I can understand that point of view. It's interesting to me that over the years I've grown to have a real appreciation of the emotion and energy of live performances. Growing up I was very much accustomed to "flawless" studio recordings. I just didn't have the ear for complex live music (singer/songwriters were always an easy listen live though).
With Trevor Rabin, I think some of his best moments are the live cuts. The first time I really heard some of the live material from disc 4 of YesYears, though, I was hooked. I think many of the Talk songs come across better live. I also found myself liking liking the "Live in LA!" versions of Trevor's solo album more than the studio cuts on "Can't Look Away". There is just something about a band working on the "concert energy" that can really building something that is special. In concert (and also on the Chilean Talk DVD boot) I loved seeing the three-way exchange of glances between Trevor, Chris, and Alan on some of the songs and the cooperation involved.

I always felt TALK was a Trevor Rabin album with Yes as the backup. Sort of like Dylan with the band playing for him. I do like the album though and it does have Yessian concepts. Besides that I had to quote this post because there's an IT'S A BEAUTIFUL DAY cover on it. For those of you who are not familiar with them they put out five albums between the late sixties and middle seventies. The last album was crap. The first four were pretty cool being the "San Francisco Sound". Personnel changes and hard living killed them quick along with a never ending lawsuit over the name. Two of the original members are now dead but I want to say they made some great music and I've got the four albums that count. Jerry Garcia put in an appearance on Marrying Maiden. In 1997 they reformed with most of the original members and put out a live album. They did seven performances and at the end of the seventh it all ended again because of internal disputes. Too bad. Sorry for going on but I want to plug one of the great forgotten bands of the hippie/psychedelic era. I saw them three times, the first time in Winterland, San Francisco, 1970 and they were great live too. Be thankful to have Yes as long as we have because they were pretty much what replaced the fallen IABD for me. Now I have to drink some wine and talk to the green dragons.

Talk is probably my favorite Yes album to take in the car with me. My copy, the remaster, is LOUD! From the first celebratory notes of "The Calling," to the groovin' "State of Play," to the epic finish on "Endless Dream," it's one of the best feel-good albums I know.
