Did I buy a rarity?

I ordered the Rhino version of Tales - I wanted to upgrade from my 1994 remaster but because of an error caused by the seller (I bought it off one of the eBay stores) what I got is a non-remastered edition with catalogue number 2 908-2. This seems to be quite an uncommon release as Google returned just a few relevant matches and no store I could find sells it.

Thus I'd like to know if I bought anything of collector's value...

Sounds like the first CD release of Tales. I know of no collector value except for the YES Completist; and I really mean COMPLETIST.

Is it that thick doulbe jewel case with the "YES: Tales From Topographic Oceans" really big in the center of the front cover? And the rest of the front cover is not there, but only on the inside? I'm pretty sure that's how those early releases were packaged.

I'm 99% certain that you have the first version Atlantic CD there...released back in the late 80s.

Are you going to return it? Can you? If not, lemme know, ok?

If the spines are white, and the titles in red ink, along with the packaging Mark described, you have an original Atlantic release. I doubt it has any real value as a rarity, I see them in used CD stores all the time. Some people believe they sound better than the remasters. The Rhinos are very good. The Japanese HDCDs are also good. But they all sound different. Good luck.

Yeah, the spines are white with red writing. The front cover has the regular artwork, however the back cover is just like Mark described - blue with the big album name and "TWO DISC SET" line without any tracklisting or anything. It came new and sealed, I've listened to it just once or twice.

Yup, that's the version of Tales that I bought many years ago. the track listing is on the back, though, and there are lyrics enclosed within the CD booklet...I seem to remember paying about 21 to 22 dollars for this, which was quite a deal, considering double CDs were worth about 30 dollars back in those days, and this was in the early 90's...

I'd love to get my hands on a vinyl version of Tales, simply for the fabulous artwork, for this particular cover is my all time favorite...

As I said, if anybody of you'd like to get it, I can sell it for a few bucks (just allowing me to buy the Rhino edition). Or I could simply swap it for the Rhino one.

That is definitely one piece in my vinyl collection that I am glad I did not get rid of 15 years ago when I liquidated some of my record collection to buy food as a starving student!

My vinyl Tales was bought the day it was released and still looks like new - I keep all my LPs in plastic protective sleeves.
