I'm not saying I'm not a Gabriel fan, but my two favorite albums, CURRENTLY, are Trick and Wind, so I have to go with the fabulous foursome.

I prefer Collin's voice over Gabriels, but I love the Gabriel stuff too (esp. on Seconds Out with Phil singing). Seconds Out rocks...everything after that was just not Genesis for me.

So I voted for Banks, Rutherford, Collins and Hackett.

If I could vote multiple times, I'd have voted for every line-up from TRESPASS to WIND & WUTHERING & SECONDS OUT.

Having followed Genesis as closely through the years as i have followed Yes this is difficult, as different line ups (this basically covers Peter Gabriel or Phil Collins on vocals, no offence to Ray Wilson) have different sounds and qualities.

However i would vote for the Gabriel era as this covers my favourite Genesis material with the highlight being The Lamb, that is not to say that i did not or do not enjoy the post Gabriel material as well, because there has also been some good material recorded.

I always see the Gabriel era as being more theatrical both in music and stage shows.

No contest - after Gabriel& Hackett left ,Genesis were still a capable stadium filling rock band.
With Gabriel & Hackett they were a magical rollercoaster that could take you far beyond the confines of your life and open up vistas of illuminated landscapes the likes of which only YES could otherwise do.

...but I didn't think that 2 people would vote for them. :-)
Peter is the man. Peter and Steve, hmmmm, once they were gone it became a poprock band and the pop rock band Genesis had lots of pop rock success.

PG Genesis 4 me.

If you think Mama, The Brazillan, Abacab and No reply at all is poppy then well your wrong. Besides lets look at Peter gabriel he had pop hits around the same time what is that about?

I love Mike and the Mechanics and has anyone heard what Tony banks is up to i know both of genesis former singers are doing albums and by the way, Has Genesis officially disband or are Mike and Tony waiting for a new singer to come and write the next Genesis album. Would love to see them sadly there last tour in 97 supporting Calling All Stations was in Europe only. Did anyone see this tour, was it good, and what kind of guitars was Mike Rutherford playing? You guy’s think we are lucky with Wakeman you guys over in Europe got to hear yes without Billy Sherwood (Yessymphonic tour) play owner of a lowly heart you got the last genesis tour and got to see Adam Wakeman with the band You people are lucky.

I enjoyed the Calling All Stations tour - it was interesting to see Ray Wilson handle some of the classics - but I know I'm in the minority here, they didn't get a very good press and most of the fans were disappointed. I'm afraid that I'm not technical enough to tell you which guitars Mike Rutherford used, and even if I was I don't think I was in a 'clear' enough state to remember

I did not get chance to see this tour, and was disappointed that they did not give it one more Album and tour.

Do you know of or have any recordings of this tour.

I haven't - but I'd like some too. In fact I complained bitterly when Genesis released their Archive #2 box set - they should have included a 4th CD with Ray Wilson era stuff - the single b-sides and some live tracks

Horns? Okay, maybe Peter would be stigmatized for lifting a page from Phil's score on that one. I could be wrong on this, but does anyone else think Phil was greatly influenced by Peter's VOICE?

My two faves are ---WIND AND WUTHERING & SELLING ENGLAND BY THE POUND.

Gotta be Gabriel and Hackett and awesome prog rock.

Peace, and You Gotta Love the Way that Lamb Lies Down on Broadway!,

... the course laid down long before. I'm with Rob on this one. When Peter left, it hurt. When Steve Hackett left, it was all downhill, prog-wise. I like Mike-y, but he's not the guitarist Steve is. Imagine what life would be like if Steve Howe had left and Chrsi took over the guitar chores!
BTW, what's master Hack-ett doing these days? anybody know?

Still very active, still producing top qualityalbums, and played in New York recently

all three lead singers are doing solo albums (can't wait for both Peter's and Phil's album) both guitarest's doing project (Steve is always busy and Mike is doing a mike and the mechanics tour which i wouldn't mind seeing him tour play hopefully a lot of genesis material) and i have no idea what tony banks is doing. the better question is what the hell is genesis doing?

Martin Riley
08-16-2002, 11:18 AM
Nothin' doin'. Although there is supposed to be a series of archive releases put out soon(both live and studio material). I read that in Record Collector magazine a few months ago. I presume it's still in the pipeworks.

I knew most people would go for gabriel but ithough a lot of the yeswest populous would go for collins era genesis

Don't get me wrong I liked everything up until Duke. But after Duke it got a bit dicey, and was only marginally interesting to me at least. i liked Phils first solo album, but again it seemed to get dicey. Lamb is a masterpiece, as well as Nursery.

i prefe Rutherford on guitar esspecially on abacab andthe end solo of that's all

The thing I find most disheartening about Collins vs. Gabriel in Genesis are the devolution of lyrics after Peter left. It seems that the quality steadily decreased after Trick of the Tail.

Does anyone else love Calling all Stations? It's my fav. since Abacab.

I was a HUGE Genesis fan for many years. I like both era's. I thought the last album with Phil was one of the best onbes they did after Abacab. I recently heard that Phil suffers from Sudden Deafness problems and will not be doing much touring anymore. Too bad!

Phil's sick where did you hear this

It doesn't matter to me as long as they have Mr.Hackett on the git fiddle. The fact is Gabriel has more interesting lyrics than Banks (who to my understanding wrote most of the words), but Phil has a much more natural singing voice. Don't get me wrong I like pretty much all of Genesis stuff, except for the one album that didn't even deserve a name, but without Steve, it pretty much became Tony's band. Its not really fair to compare Collins and Gabriel, because Gabriel always had Hackett in the band. The later stuff would have been a lot different with Steve there to Hackett it to bits.

Genesis after Hackett and Gabriel left were 'just' a very good mainstream rock group - nothing very challenging but good enough. Yet beforehand they were very progressive, innovative and exciting. So I voted for Gabriel, Hackett etc

I liked Genesis and YES both the same at one time.--Even liked Genesis for a while after PG left and Phil took over.---My first time to see Genesis, Phil had hair, (long in fact!!), and headphones!!!---I thought he was the best drummer until seeing Bruford.--He should have kept the headphones and stuck to drums.---Genesis might have had the opportunity for a real reunion and Phil could still hear now.--His greed and self importance is what killed Genesis imo.

Well, just as I'm a Yes-whole, I'm also a Genesis-whole. I enjoy all the incarnations of the band for what they are. But, you asked a preference, and I have to say that the early lineup produced the music that I love the most.

I do agree somewhat about Phil having the better singing voice - I heard him do "Supper's Ready" live, and it brought tears to my eyes, lots of emotion in his voice. And, I do enjoy the later music, even without Steve Hackett - every incarnation has had its charm, just as it's been with Yes.
