View Full Version : Owner of a Lonely Heart live
Just out of interest, whenever you hear the live version of Owner of a Lonely Heart, they usually played Make it Easy before it....I dunno if this was to try and confuse the fans who were dying to hear that song....so did anyone actually guess what was coming the first time they heard Make it Easy?

I always thought Make it easy was a great song, and I would have liked it on 90125 instead of "Our Song", or just added on there(90125 is actually pretty short, 8 songs). I think it was in the batters box when the final cut for the record was made. It also sounds like Trevor and Chris worked on it a lot when they were Cinema. I was suprised it never showed up on Generator or Talk or Union, so I think in addition to making the not so hardcore fans scratch there heads when he starts playing, he included it in live set because it was so close to making it on there.

When I heard it live in 84, I had no idea what was coming-it even took me a few seconds to recoginize "owner" when it started.
I thought "make it easy" was a new track -like they had done on the drama tour.

On Trevor's Live In LA cd, at the end of his show when he comes back for the encore, he plays Make It Easy before going into Owner Of A Lonely Heart. Anyway, I figure he must have liked it enough to carry it over into his solo tour.

It was meant to be on the Cinema album. I have a demo version of Make It Easy that's on the Cinema Sessions cd that I have. It's very bad! LOL!!! They really did change it a lot, and it's too bad it didn't make it onto the 90125 album. There were a lot of songs Cinema had that I wish could have been on 90125, but that's how it goes I guess. *sigh*

It gave the song a little more...ooomph when the played it live.
It's just an electrifying feeling when Make It Easy ends and then Alan White bursts into 'Owner of a Lonely Heart'. It's even funnier on the 9012live DVD when Trevor punches the air as he plays that first riff.

I don't think they were trying to fool anyone...It is just a great intro and they found a way to use it....BTW, in case anyone doesn't know, the whole track is on Yesyears....its a good song, with a great intro....
*groan* I could have bought the DVD of Yesyears the other day...
Damnit.

Gosh I have YesYears in the cassette box set. How pathetic is that?
I really need to upgrade. :lmao:
I finally ordered the 9012LIVE DVD last night. I've had it on video all these years, but when I found out the DVD has a glimpse of Trevor's naked butt I just had to go get it right away. :winknudge

I like the song Make It Easy, which I only know from YesYears. I thought I was going to hear a live Make It Easy on The Word Is Live, but they only play the intro, then go into some other song. What a tease! It was really disappointing.

I get the impression Make it Easy came close to being on 90125. On Tim Morse's website for Yesstories; Yes in their own Words there's a section with unused chapters that deals with The Paris Sessions, 9012Live the Solos and Yesyears. Talking about "Make it Easy" Trevor says he was dissapointed with the version they used, saying there was a better edit of the version on Yesyears with some overdubs, and that Jon was very dissapointed 'cause they didn't use one of the versions he put vocals on.' I don't think Yes ever did Make it Easy in full live, like others said, they mostly have just like using the intro lick as a segue into Owner. It's almost always how they play it, excecpt for the Ladder tour where they used "Cinema" instead and the latest tours with Steve, they just go right into the song with no intro. It's just a bit of changing an arrangment for live shows, like how most 70's and 80's live versions of "And You And I" start with an added intro that quotes from the "Apocalypse" section.

On Trevor's demo CD,the song Make It Easy (6:02) is completely instrumental.
The Cinema Sessions version of Make It Easy (7:07) has vocals by Trevor.
Back around 1981, I was listening to DJ Casey Kasem's American Top 40 radio show, which was always on Sunday mornings from 10 AM till noon. He played the song Make It Easy. He said it was by a new band called Cinema made up some of the members of Yes, and he mentioned Chris Squire and Alan White.
Of course Cinema never happened and I didn't hear Make It Easy again until many years later on the YesYears boxed set.

The version on the remastered 90125 doesn't really seem to come together as well as it does when it's matched with Owner of a Lonely Heart. Still, Trevor on the 9012live DVD says that he wanted to play 'City of Love' for 30 seconds...I for one would have happily have the two swapped the place, as Make it Easy is far much better than City of Love.
Have you a link to that website? I must say it sounds interesting!
