I am not 100% sure what you want from us. Alternate titles? Funny titles? where the band is heading. where Going for the One Belongs in the scheme of things. Many questions, many answers!>JOE

I'm with MrGone3 on this one, RonBlatt. Huh???
I (rather randomly) selected "the Other One" as I'm not a big GOING FOR THE ONE fan. (I don't dislike it. I just like TORMATO better and that's the album it gets compared to most often.)
Could you revise your initial post to give us a clue, please?

Sorry... no mysteries here. I was just wondering how people interpret the "one" in Going for the One. What does it mean to you?
The poll was just to be funny. Sorry :)

I voted for THE OTHER ONE since it's the title of a Grateful Dead song I like. But GOING FOR THE ONE means, to me, to reach for your goals...Whatever "the one" is, go for it.

Sorry again... but I meant specifically. I mean, is "one" for you your spouse, your art, your religion... ? What personal things do people relate to Yes music in their lives?

I always thought the title "Going For The One" was about sex. Which is reinforced by the naked guy on the cover.
It doesn't sound that stupid does it?

Once at the start can you gamble that you truly surely really mean to finish...
I wonder what it means to engage in the act of lovemaking without really meaning to finish. Of course, who ever wants it to end?

This song is all about going for your goals or an adventure and the questioning and doubting we may go through in the process. Anything we do, really, involves some competition- whether with others or with yourself. It seems to also allude to getting "in the zone" ("seeing all your sense of fear diminish... As you throw away misconceptions"). Anyone who achieves success in any aspect of life will tell you that it is 80% a mental game with yourself.
Jon uses 3 or 4 analogies to give us a picture as to what he is talking about, including perhaps the most fearful game of all- love.
The ending 'run-on' section seems to get across thoughts/feelings/actions of what it is like when you have conquered and become the success you are after.
I think the "turn on to love" and "sending love" statements are appropo to this. Think about it- what is a common thread amongst successful people? They form charities and other organizations to help others reach succes also. Those who are truly in love are wishing and hoping for the same thing for others.
It's natural to want your friends and family to experience the same successes and happy moments that you have, whether in business, relationships, sports, or even just an exciting boat trip taken that weekend.

I had read somewhere that the title was a joke and was meant to be a stab at their record company who was urging them for "a Number 1 Hit" therefore GFTO.

And I was sure it was about sex, too.
The album was a No1 hit in the UK. In the punk era too (Wonderous Stories got to No7). Sorry, I've swallowed the "Guniess Book Of British Hit Singles"/Albums.

booking a two airline tickets for a one night, round trip flight ,
to a city 2000 miles away,
from an airport you have to drive 4.5 hours to get to,
only 4 days in advance,
to see your favorite band play 5 songs.
and loving every minute of it.
That is Going For The One !

this was just to abstract of a post not to play with. Very fun! Ha!
YES. Close to the edge is about where I have felt many times and UP and DOWN!!! But I think my "ONE" and "THE ONE" comes very close to the edge.

I always took it to mean enlightenment. You know, "What did the Bhuddist say to the hot dog vendor? Make me one with everything,".
I think it means harmony with oneself and one's environment, one's awareness, and perception of existence.

The One = Enlightenment
Going for the One could be interpreted as Seeking Enlightenment
