View Full Version : Why I Hang Out At YesFans

In a recent post, longtime YesFan Earl Grey makes mention of the fact that, in recent months, YesFans has challenged his thinking - and changed it, for the better.

As far as I'm concerned, that's all the justification 1yesfan needs for having this site. What is more exciting than being suddenly confronted with something new and wonderful? Answer: suddenly seeing something old in a new way, a way that increases its wonder!

YES!

Anyway, this made me contemplate the many reasons I enjoy the site. And the poll above follows from that contemplation.

You can vote for as many of the options as you like!

Love to all,
Q

Thanks, Quantum:

I like it when I can vote more than once.

Despite the fact that I don't post very often, I read YesFans everyday, several times now that we're facing an exciting new coming Tour and I intend to attend some. I check it out as a thermometer which gives me some valuable hints about the venues, cities, etc..., besides having been tought about Yes history by Yesfans family.

I have no one in my personal lfe that I can debate the merits of MIND DRIVE with, Here I can have lively exchanges with folks that know what the heck I am talking about. Thanks especially to <b>Dragonfly</b> and her great takes and perspectives. And my favorite poster to read is <b>i-and-i</b>.

I love to argue and debate, so thats one reason.

I also enjoy reading posts and seeing others viewpoints.

Garshk!

Well gt76yesman, you almost got me to blush at my monitor screen. I often feel like I can't express myself the way I want to in my posts. I appreciate that someone actually enjoys reading things I post. I look at posts by Earl, Dragonfly, Rifferroo and so many others who make words obey them so well, and I feel like I'm illiterate. Thanks again.

I like to read different views on Yes music and off topic as well. So far the site has enabled me to appreciate better some Yes music I had neglected. I also like the friendly atmosphere. Besides, the fact that we all come from different places in the world brings a lot of variety of opinions as regard culture, social behaviours, etc. Finally, it's a good opportunity for me to read and write English every day, thus maintaining a certain level of practice. I learnt some interesting expressions and new words from all of you.

According to Flo, this site has been allowing myself to think better about some songs that havenīt received their deserved value so far.
gt76yesman made me listen to Mind Drive more accurately then I started thinking why shouldnīt Yes play it next Tour. Undoubtely, each member would have the opportunity to confirm their own skills with new stuff showing to those skeptics who donīt see in their latest Tours as a great live performers they are.
In fact, I cannot see at the present music cenery, any reliable critic who has moral authority to attack the quality of Yes music.

I didn't vote. But I do feel a strong connection with YES as they have been a part of my life for 25 years! My God how many bands have come and gone in that period? Now the fans of the band can see what the band is doing. And also discuss points of view with other fans of YES! Some of the threads seem a little silly at times, but if I feeel silly I will post a reply. I have seen some negative waves sent towards other fans at times and even the band itself. I know I've critiqued OYE a few times. But I felt the band could do better. This is a great way to support our band and spread the word. And the word is YES>JOE

Don't think for a minute that your posts are anything short of the best of the best!!! You're always upbeat, reasonable, and often really funny!! And big-time informative....my gosh, you are like an encyclopedia of rock n roll!! LOL!! I have learned quite a bit from you.

And, thanks so much for the compliment on my posts here....I am honored that you have likened me to the ranks of Dragonfly and Earl Grey!! (blushin'!)

And something else...I think i and i is THE master of images!!
Always such cool attachments!

Joe, (mrgone3), I wholeheartedly agree with your sentiments. Very well put.

Anyway, myself, I come to Yesfans for various reasons. Mostly for the people. The Yesfans here are from all over the place, and offer such interesting and often provocative thoughts on Yes and many other topics....how can I not be captured by the magic of this forum?? This place is truly something special....

Here's hoping our love keeps growing!

YES!!!!!!!

To be a devoted Yes fan is to have something major in common with other fans. There are no Yes fans among my family or friends(except my own children), so I feel a sort of cosmic connection to the people here. It IS a big thing to have in common....

My guess would be that Genevive lives in Illinois.

The Villager
06-05-2002, 10:36 AM
Ha ha! Of course the actual location is private. The reason that I guessed Illinois is because of the stories of Ray Bradbury, which I love! Many of the early Martian stories pictured Martian towns and the Martians who lived in them as drawn from the Illinois boyhood of an American astronaut!

Hey, I loved Bradbury, too!!!!!

And Asimov
Heinlein
Clarke
Herbert
Bova
Simmons
Orson Scott Card
Le Guin
Silverberg
Niven
Crichton

and too many others......smile......Jan in Erie CO

P.S. Besides if Genevive said where they are having tea, the entire blasted media would converge on the place! Not a pretty sight.

I love to hang out at YesFans though I do not do it as often as I would like. The best thing about the site is that there are so many interesting members and so many different topics to choose from.

Martin Riley

I've only been on the site for about 3 weeks but already I feel as if it's become the only place I can talk freely about Yes. My partner is more than happy for me to be so involved with my musical tastes but she just doesn't 'get' it about Yes,Genesis, Crimso etc, etc. So this is where I come and can talk freely and openly about the band I love.
It was only once I'd got involved that a whole world of different off topic subjects cropped up as well and now I'm hooked. And I love it

hypatiamarshall

Yes, is true that this is the one place which will understand our obsession about them. A person doesn't follow a band for 30 years for nothing!

4 out of the mentioned reasons for me: (and I never caught this thread before, strange...)

To argue; I enjoy interesting debate with interesting people

Because I enjoy the people at YesFans; I have friends here.....and this is even more so since my trip to London where I met a few of you wondefull people and I know in my heart that even if I was never to see you again there is life long bond and friendship between us.....

YesFans is the BEST Yes site, with the BEST content and the BEST members!.....no doubt about it!!

To bounce my point of view off others...........I can't deny that I like to ventilate my opinion on matters, whether it is on Yes or on other subjects and I've learned so much from other people's opinions here, it is something I would not want to miss....

All in all, I'm very happy that I found this site now almost two years ago. And a big thumps up to Tim and all the moderators of this site for their incredible work!!!

Well at 1st it was just to hear when the band was doing stuff.
Patrick Edward wasn't doing a good job of watching for concerts.

Then it was because I'm addicted to trading live Yes recordings.

But now it's because my best friends and some of the people who mean the most to me live hear too.

Oh and it's still all Smatt's fault that I'm hear in the 1st place. ;)
I love you guys

I've made great friends here. I get a similar vibe from participating in this site to the one I get from listening to Yes.

I've been visiting a message board for Phish that makes Yesfans look like a different species of animal. I don't visit many message boards, but I understand that this one is unique in that people are nice to one another.

I need nice in my relationships!!

Plus, the band Yes ain't so bad neither.

i hang out here at yesfans because there are passionate, intelligent people here who speak their mind and have something to say.

i love yes so much it is a way of life for me, and like other things of that caliber, it is so wonderful when you can share your passion with others who feel the same way.

it seems that the people here treat the others as if they were family (see alternate thread.."are yesfans like family") and not just like some other strangers online.
it is definitely different here, i must say.
and i really love it.

I don't mean to belittle any other message board, but of all that I'm a member of, this is the kickassest (is that a word?). Anyway, someone mentioned the problem with the Rush message board with some mod kicking out members for no apparent reason. Then there's the Dream Theater message board where most of the members seem to have peculiar sense of humor (if any at all). The one that even comes close is the Genesis Talking Shop but it's not as active as Yesfans. So I guess I have to compliment Tim (1yesfan) and the rest of you for making this forum such an enjoyable one :D

1/ It is the best site.
2/ It has the best people! I love all of you, some more than others, but all of you nonetheless!!
3/ Keeps me stress free and laughing my ass off!
4/ The band is great and their music enriches my life!
5/ Keeps me out of trouble and in trouble! A paradox!!
6/ Better than watching O'Reilly and "Fair and balanced" Fox news network!
7/ Peggy gets under my skin, and I allow it and become silly putty!
8/ Love the debates on interesting topics.
9/ Like playing the word games!

I've thought this was a fab site since I first became a member. I have been a passionate YES fan for around 20 years (since 90125 came out, really, so make that 21 years!). The amazing thing about Yesfans is that the fans come from all over the world which just goes to show how universal YES music is. Despite the whingers in the rock music press who never seem to have anything good to say about our band, YES music is still very much alive and kicking. That's because YES can move people's emotions like no other band. Whether its the romantic beauty to be found on 'Turn of the Century,' the fantasy land of that most wonderous of all creations 'Close to the Edge' or the dreamy qualities of 'Awaken,' there is a pure magic about this wonderful group of remarkable musicians which excites all of us fans who come together as one on this site. I, like a few others on Yesfans, was drawn to it as I had no friends who were interested in YES, nobody I could exchange my views with concerning every facet of YES music. It has been excellent to partake of this reviving nectare (I'm like a bee to honey in that respect! LOL). As well as all of this, I have also been kept in touch with YES's touring plans via this site which has been very welcome (I'd never want to miss a chance of seeing YES in concert: it's too much of an inspiring experience for that). Here's to the continued prosperity of this fine site and the delightful crowd of people who make it so special. And here's to YES continuing to wow us for years to come!

Cheers
Mark

BRAVO! great thread idea.

I voted for the new info, interesting things to read about and post. It's interactive which is a big one for me and up to date with concert/tour information from folks who have just seen shows or will see a show and want to meet up. Can't say that I favor any other site as much.

I voted for:

To pick up the latest news about Yes
Because I enjoy the people at YesFans; I have friends here
Because there is always something new to read and post about

I dont know anyone who likes Yes near me so this is the next best thing; The meetup at Wembley was fantastic I miss you guys!

I come to Yesfans to hear about the band as well as to listen to the discussions posted here. The politics are my current favorite, but I should tone down my rhetoric! Anyway, it's good to be able to put my thoughts up for others to see, as well as see what my fellow travelers think!

But, beneath it all, this is a good group of people to vist. They're pretty friendly and we have the shared interest in Yes to tie us together.

So, thanks Tim for putting up this board and thanks to my fellow Yesfans for interesting & enlightening discussions.

When I open my browser, up comes Yesfans. It's the first, and often, the only place I visit online anymore. The most important reason is the people I've met here (and all too few in real life). I've made some important friendships here. I'm generally quite shy in real life when it comes to meeting new people, and the folks here have really made me feel like family. It's quite extraordinary, really.
Oh, yeah, and the band is way cool, too.;)

Well yeah, but that gets old after a while. And I'm tired of getting weird looks in public.

Why do I hang out here?

Because we've all become a family.
We have our good times, and bad.
But in the end, we can always count
on one another to be there to help.
I can say that first hand! :yesbird:

I came here because of my love of this most wonderful band ~ Yes. I stay because I've met some great people whom I now consider my dear friends.
Other reason ~ to get the lastest skinny on the band.

Here's the good read from Kurt, in the beginning...Ya know, I usually try to avoid threads where I've got to expose myself as a human being, but I will take the shields down for a moment. In my real life, I spend a fair amount of my time in "no man's land". I know I'm connected to a lot of people and things, but for various reasons a lot of the time I don't feel it. I feel like the basic function of sites like this, doesn't have anything to do with Yes. Yes is not the reason we are here. Yes is the excuse. The reason we are here is because of a basic loneliness that exists in most people, no matter how poorly or how well they think their life may be going. Yes just happens to be a habit that we share.

I have made some friends here over the last year or so that by way of the site..or IM..or otherwise, have become part of my day to day life, and have helped me to deal with my loneliness in various ways. I am not gonna name names, because you all know who you are. I hope I have been as good a friend to all of you as you have been to me. I really do appreciate you all...........

Shields back up !!!

because I am a YesFan

(there are two responses, and I'm going to type both of them)

lol

Ya see, there's this band.Man, are they amazing! They have this vast, huge catalogue of songs, some of which take years, decades to fully appreciate, others of which are immediately captivating, and remain so for the aforementioned years, decades.

And, then there's the longevity of this band, the likes of which have been seen but a few times in the entire history of electrified musics.

And, they make me, us, cry sweet tears of joy. They elicit emotions from us, me, which we were barely aware existed, barely knew we had inside of us.Sometimes they achieve this with their mere recordings.A song comes home to us after many years have passed.Or, more often and more likely, this happens to us as they perform right in front of our astonished faces.

And, they have just gotten better and better at this with the passing of time.Live, this band is unparalleled in my own experience.

This is a thing both wonderful and beautiful.

They have brought me much joy, and great.

Then, there's this associated website, for the fans of this band.Unsurprisingly, it is peopled with some of the most remarkable individuals one can find on a vast and largely barren web.The great majority of you are wonderful. The remainder merely hugely interesting! And, by and large, everyone of you possesses intelligence which can at first to a newcomer seem imposing.Until one begins to sense your hearts.

This is why I come here.I adore the band, worship them. And, again unsurprisingly, I have come to feel the same about it's fans, you all.

We worry together, about one another, and our heroes. We rise and fall with the ebbs and flows of their travails;may they get together and bring us that magnificent music once again, at least!

The other answer is:What Michael said, above!

Joined during December of last year and this is my 83rd. post...........! Wow!!!!

Have enjoyed my time immensely and feel very much 'amongst friends'.

The music industry/media in the UK has derided the music I love for approaching 30 years and brainwashed the youths ever since that 'our' music was "pretentious crap"!

But now I discover a global family of music lovers that truly LOVE this most wonderful of music. Both my wife, Fiona, and I are overjoyed to realise that we are not alone!

To add a further element, this last week end we met up, for the first time, with 'Plodder' (a truly prolific contributor....) and his wife and had a wonderful time.

I voted on this thread that 'we enjoy the people and have friends here' - but could have voted for very many more!

In due course, we hope to enjoy the facility of the Forum to help us develop the 'Themed Music Week Ends' (Yes, Genesis, Floyd, Camel, Bowie, Kate Bush etc.) we plan to hold at our, currently under construction, Guest House at South Wales.........

Looking forward to continued informed debate / opinions / news etc.

YesFans is the BEST Yes site, with the BEST content and the BEST members!

Following is the 1st post of this thread:

Well , for me it was about finding out Yes were playing live in Australia in Sept 2003 , wet myself when I realised the tour for Feb 2003 was cancelled by Yes and I may have missed the chance to see YES Live . My ex by the way ,thought I had lost the plot and was none to pleased a day later , that I had booked the Melbourne and Sydney gig from New Zealand , she never did really get over that. Im serious .
Imagine my joy finding that a tour was on for Oz.
These concerts brought new people here into my life and for that Im truly greatful.

But I have stayed nearly 5 years . Why?

Because I now have some very cool friends here .
There are a lot of good people here.

People here seem care for each other , there is a lot light in this place , ok we have thee odd fruit bat float through here , but we handle that at the time.

So anyway I like it here , I hope the newbies hang around a while , there has been a lot of fun in those nearly five years .

So stick around a while newbie , cause your ride at Yesfans is just getting started .This place is and the people here are a little special , well I think they are .

Thank you for having me here.

Glad you're here Steve! My only regret is that I didn't get in much earlier, when I could have really used the YES company! I've also met some very special people here who really mean a lot to me (you're one of them!). It's been tough around here lately, but I see the clouds clearing, and there are all kinds of weather, so hopefully the boat is strong enough.

Love to all my new buddies - I think about you, and wish you good things in your life!

Well, if I remember right (which is an increasingly rare occurrence these days), it was David from Gabble Ratchet who told me about Yesfans; I talked with him after the Circa: concert last January (San Juan Capistrano). Got home from the concert, hopped right on here, and here I've remained.

There've been some interesting turns of events in 2008, that's for sure, and things have gotten a little testy in the Yeshouse...but the main reason I keep coming back here is the friends I've made here. As many before me have said, this is a special group of people here...I wasn't expecting the degree of warmth and care shown me when I got here, and it's touching, to say the least. It truly is amazing--the variety and diversity of people in this room, bound together by our common love for a band that has changed the face of contemporary music. Over the weekend, I had the privilege of meeting Steve & Paula (Hill St. & HotLegs), Tasia, Timmo, Kathy & Jaybird...and it didn't surprise me at all that when I actually MET these people, it felt like we'd known each other all our lives. If Circa: happens to do another gig at San Juan Capistrano or another Southern California locale at some point in the future, I know I'll be meeting a lot more of you...and that's something I'm really looking forward to.

I have to admit I'm a little puzzled-bordering-on-disturbed that 20 people have clicked on the "I come here to argue" option. In the interests of being open-minded, I guess all I can say is, different strokes...but the last thing I want to come in here and do is get into a potentially negative situation when I come in here for enjoyment. Lively debate, to me, is quite a world apart from coming in here just to argue with someone. (I'm getting flashes of Monty Python's "The Argument Clinic" right now & trying not to laugh.)

Anyway.....this is a fun and informative place. I've not only made new friends, I've also learned about new bands I might not have otherwise heard of, I've been kept up on interesting current events as well as news about Yes and other prog bands, and I've had fun playing some of the cornball games in here. Yesfans IS a good escape tool for me, and far be it from me to deny that I spend way too much time in here. This is actually not that much different from when I joined Narcotics Anonymous 11 1/2 years ago: I felt like I belonged, that I'd earned my seat in the room, and that I was being welcomed almost unconditionally.

In fact, when I say my Pleases and Thank Yous at night before I go to sleep, I thank God for my 4 families: My family of origin, my family of friends from childhood to present day, my NA recovery family, and my Yesfans family...and I ask Him to bless us all with abundant prosperity. Because we all deserve it, in spades.

Before I had a computer, my 'then' girlfriend did. We were talking about websites, and I said, 'I bet there's some cool YES-related sites! Are there?'

'Lets see, I'll check...'

She googled (Sounds obscene!), and found a brand new website, 'Yesfans'! Our site was only a few days old.

I looked around the threads a bit, there were perhaps 200 members or less at the time. It was weird, seeing that there were two-hundred or so people out there who had my same obsession...

A month later, I was gifted a computer for a combo Xmas/Birthday present. I immediately joined Yesfans.com.

I've never been disappointed. I've been shocked, gobsmacked, thrilled, and saddened at times, but I've never been disappointed by this magic website.

It was my first, and other than a couple of trysts with Disneyland sites, Todd Rundgren stuff, a little bit of Beatles tossed-in, I've stuck. Yesfans stuck.

It's a community. We've had our good times, and lesser times, but I sort-of married my first love here.

I've made so many friends, often times we have little in common besides our yes-obsession. Which has expanded my universe, and made me a better man.

When I meet someone I've posted with for years, in person, for the first time, I'm always amazed how it's like meeting-up with an old dear friend.

Yesfans has enhanced my thought, it's expanded my knowledge, it's caused me to reach higher in my own art: As greatness leads to greatness. I've met, and have become friends with some of my most important heroes. I don't know if I'd have ever gone to Boston, or Chicago, or to Australia, if not your you.
My own music and artistry might have gone by the wayside.
Strange, I'm a 'people person': I've always had friends, but never like those that I've made here.

You guys are the best.

Hands down.

We ARE a town, a city. And I know that I can always trust you guys and dolls, whether on-line or in person. Perhaps it's the excellence of the music, the positivity and shared lives that have brought us all together.

Or perhaps something inexplicable. Magical. Providential. Who knows?

All I know is, is that Yesfans means the world to me.

I have to remind myself, 'It's only a website for garshsakes!'

But it's not only a website.

It's a gathering.

God I love this place, I love you all, and couldn't imagine where I'd be without you all.

If I didn't work 12 hour shifts, I would be here all the time. As is, I'm here when I can be, but you are never far from my heart and my thoughts.

That's why I hang-out here.

It's my Oasis (Other than Australia, The Great American Southwest, or the rainforests of the American Northwest...).

My medicine for melancholy.

All Hail Yesfans.com!

Here's to the future, invariably sweet.

The a great sum up Earl of why you are here.
I think your post says it all.
It is a family , thats why I have no hesitation in saying Im coming to America , hopefuly next year .
Because it is like a family .
A lot people I talk to about Yesfans , think Im talking garbage , I guess if you are not into Yes , then you just wont get it.

This place just rocks and that is just it really.
You see video of Yesfans gatherings and pics here at Yesfans
and everyone is so welcoming to Yesfans that travel there way. That I think is also why this place is special , how many others fans have groups of fans that hook up like this? Not that many I would venture to say .

Hey I'm just here for the football. :winknudge

Just kidding. After coming here for over 4 years, it's a hard habit to break.

Since I've been here, I got rid of my husband, got a new place to live, had lithotripsy (for a kidney stone), got a job, adopted another cat, suffered through the death of my best friend....

....and I'm still here!

All the Yesfans here have been very supporive though all my changes and I thank them all.

That's a lot of life changes Cindy - you seem a happy person, with a real positive attitude. I'm sorry about your best friend - so sad. The support I've seen here is such a beautiful thing.

I love the community, and I've made many special friends here, both virtual and IRL.

I've been consistently amazed by how much I find in common with the people I've met on here, and Yes is only a part of that.

Where else would I have found such dear friends in OZ, NZ, the UK, Europe, and all over the US and Canada?

I would NEVER have gone to OZ to see PT if it hadn't been for the people I'd met here!
