I would imagine the yesongs version will be the overwhelming favorite, but I'm surprised the Union edition was not an option. Granted, many people fell that Trevor's solo ruined it, but in most cases in these polls all the available versions are listed. Was this an oversite, or intentional?

It may have been because the Union tour is not available on official US/Europe release and your average Yesfan will have not heard it. I haven't.

This poll and others like it that I post are based only on the official CD releases. I have heard a few 91 tour versions of YOURS IS NO DISGRACE and I thought they were awesome.

Oh, ok, I forgot, its not available to most people. I'm used to hearing it on the Japanese laserdisc release.

It is very good, including Trevor's "heavy metal" solo.

I guess I'm one of the few that preferred the HOUSE OF YES version. This'll make me get out YESSONGS to compare over the weekend.

Nope, I went for House of Blues as well - the improv jam in the middle is great. Union - Trevor's solo? :heydude:

There certainly doesn't seem to be a bad version of YOURS IS NO DISGRACE.

Indeed, there are no bad versions of this classic. But I think the version on Yessongs is the best. It is so powerfull and Steve's solo is one of the best things he ever did on a record. I also like the version of the Union tour with a kind of competition between Steve and Trevor (OK you can play fast, but I can play faster).

Well, I would have to pick (out of those three) the original version. It is the truest form, and has a real good flow to it. I didnt care for the Yessongs version, mainly because of Alan. I love his drum work, but his version of that song (along with CTTE and ESPECIALLY sunrise) I found his drumming to be rather sloppy and disjointed, and I find it hard to listen to.
But to be HONEST with you, my favorite version of Yours Is No Disgrace of all time has to be from Musikladen, April 1971, with Tony Kaye. I love the middle section, where they have a small jam (like in the yessongs version, only shorter). Steve has this really cool wah wah going on with his guitar, and Chris has some funk into it with his bass. And it had the most punch and crunch out of all the versions I have heard. Just my opinion.

I have heard this version and at first I thought it was great just for Rabin’s playing, but I’ve changed my mind somewhat with subsequent listenings. His soloing kind of overpowers the rest of the song, especially the speed metal riffs. What, did Eddie Van Halen suddenly make a guest appearance? :guitar:

Anyway, I’m not having an easy time picking one out here – the original and the Yessongs version are dukin’ it out big time, but I think the HOB version may just clean up after the other two KO each other LOL. They all have their merits to me, so I guess I won't vote. :crybby:

(Unless i can vote for them all :D )

Peace,

Phil

Of the three, I'd have to go with the studio version, although the Yessongs version is a close second.

I have to say, it's never sounded better than on the last tour though! WOW!

Yessongs easily among the choices.

If the Union tour was an official release, I'd vote for that.

From the choices given I go for the HOB version, but I have the Japanese import dvd of the Union tour and the version played that tour is definetly the best I ever heard and I think the version I heard and saw in Wembley Arena this year probably comes second! Steve was on fire there!

The version on 'Yessongs' is the best for me; its perfect. The studio version is also fantastic..also i'm rather partial to Union tour versions of it too!

Me too! Yours is no Disgrace was the first Yessong I ever heard.
The purity of that original version still makes me press the "repeat" button on the car CD Player every time.
I hated the Union version.
The purity disappeared.
When they started playing it at Wembley in '91, I was absolutely thrilled, as I honestly thought that my last live YiND was in the past.
By the end of the song, it felt like a dream had been destroyed.
Thankfully, I have since seen it live many more times, with my enjoyment totally restored.

Steve's improv solo is fantastic in HOY. I never quite understood Trevor's solo on the union version. I think it was too over the top.

"Yessongs" for me, due to the presence of Rick who cemented it beautifully with his orchestral keyboards. The ethereal reprise of "...Caesar's palace, morning glory, silly human, silly human race" towards the end is one of the great spontaneous moments in Yes music.

To each his own.

I don't think Steve Howe liked it much either.

You make a good point here (at least to me), YIND, Awaken (well I like the KTA version best), Owner, ISAGP were certainly exellent that tour!

It's the highlight of House of Blues - great playing from Steve. I rented Yessongs in Japan and listened to it once and wasn't overly impressed. I think many of the songs have aged well. HofY was an interesting show, some of the new stuff doesn't come out well cause it doesn't match the studio quality, but in the case of the older stuff, like Yours, it sounds better live. I also have the Japanese release of the 1991 San Fransico show in which both Steve and Rabin have extended solos. It's not Steve's best playing in my opinion. Whether by design or accident you sort of get an overview of old and new style guitar playing. Rabin does his take on Van Halen and Hendrix - he gets a bit carried away perhaps before it all comes back together. That's an interesting concert because you see that Trevor really is quite tallented. If fact he may very be the better guitarist technically (electric, but not acoustic), though Howe has more feeling (and is better acoustically). What is interesting is that they are very different in style so one cannot compare one versus the other.
It's also cool watching them share the mic with Jon on I've Seen All Good People. It looked like Howe was having a great time. On most videos he seems so focused on playing. Squire will come over to him and whereas Rabin would have made a face back, Howe indifferently plays on.

Yessongs version.I have stretch of freeway on my daily commute where everyones feet become very heavy(avg.speed 80-90mph).I time it so, Steve's solo is playing in this stretch.Pacific Ocean to my left and the volume cranked, nothing better.

I like the studio version. bufords subtle drumming, a slightly different tone in Jon's voice and underappreciated Tony Kaye textural style of keyboards are stunning. The yes years remastered version from the yes album stands tall!

I have a small table with with wrought iron legs that when moved across the tile floor makes a semi-musical metallic scraping sound...hearing sounds like that never fails to bring Yours Is No Disgrace to my mind because Steve's flying fingers make a sound like this in a quiet moment in his solo on this song on Yessongs...

That whole album is so ingrained in my mind...

I voted for the The Yes Album version. I like the way the opening statement is played more staccato-like and not pulled back like the live versions. It is cleraner overall. All versions are great though.

You should add Tsongas to the poll. I think it is my new favorite. Otherwise I'd say the studio version.

The original was my introduction to Yes as a thirteen year old kid back in '71. it blew me away then and still does now. The Tsongas version would be second just ahead of the Yessongs version.

The HoB version is very powerful indeed but I remember when I just got into Yes and was collecting/discovering the albums how much I liked YIND on Yessongs. So my vote went to 1972.

I went with house of Blues it comes alive better (if thats possibel) than any other version I'v heard. But.... did any one go to the 2005 Niagra Falls, NY show? Out of the three shows I saw it was the best version( it was the last song of the night too!) and I think it was better than any of the three listed here.
