View Full Version : Serious advice needed!
Okay, so I just got Talk Active, and also a live Talk CD...and I love it to bits. Now, I think that Talk and Relayer are the best Yesalbums I've got, so where do I go from here? I already have-
Fragile
CTTE
Relayer
Going for the One
Drama
90125
Big Generator
Talk
I'm really stuck here. Any ideas?

Ctte; no disrespect to Amy, but i would get Close to the edge before Tales, but the choice is yours!

Tales From Topographic Oceans for the full on ultimate grand YES vision in all it's extravagant glory. (If you can handle Relayer you should be ready for Tales!) (Rhino remaster version is the only one to get)
The Yes Album, for the early classics, the first one with Howe, and the first truly realized YES vision.
Magnification for the best new era YES masterwork.
If you are into live albums:
Yessongs - for the band in it's classic form, fiery youth.
Keys To Ascension I - for great performances AND great live sound quality. The live version of The Revealing (Tales side 1), surpasses the original studio version. Plus some decent new studio tracks as a bonus.

Get Tales. You'll be glad you did. :D
And then if you never get anything else, at least you'll have a great collection right there.

Make it four, but at the same time or immediately after get The Yes Album.
And after you've listened to the YA a bunch of times and think you know the music well, then get Yessongs...

No-one suggested 'Open Your Eyes' or 'Union'!?
Seriously, 'Tales from Topographic Oceans' is really what Yes is all about. It is a must-have CD whether a Yes fan or not.
I also love Yes Active and the live talk concerts.

No no no..... Earlier stuff must come before Tales.... One can't fully grasp the granduer of Tales until one at the very least travels through the Yes Album.......

Might as well start with Yes album then proceed to Tales, CTTE, and then get Relayer. You will definatel hear YES at their best
Yup, The Yes Album should come first.
It's a good job I haven't bought any new albums!!

It's a good job I haven't bought any new albums!!
I hope you can reconsider that..
I have to say that the ABWH album gave me the final boost to go into the depths of the distant 70's. For me Tales is not just one of the better Yes albums, it is one that really needs some time to let it come alive. There is no other album that carries this many Yesmusic in it, just because there is in some sence music within the music. When you listen to it you'll find out.. really.
Union to me is not quite the album that gave me shivers, but ABWH did it for me.

I'm going to suggest "Yes" and "Time and a Word." It's definitely a different sounding Yes compared to the albums you listed already having. Very raw energy and great vocal harmonies on these.
A lot of people are suggesting the "The Yes Album." While I agree this is a spectacular must have album, it probably won't hold any new surprises. Every song on this album except "The Clap" and "Venture" has probably been played 1000's of times on your local classic rock station. So I would hold off on this one.
Why not fill in the gap between "Going For the One" and "Drama?" "Tormato" is a great album with it's own distinct sound (most notably Squire's highly Flanged bass).
Be prepared to be disappointed with a lot of Post-"Talk" material. The very, very last albums to buy are "Open Your Eyes" and "Magnification." These albums depict a band which is becoming stale and not aging very well.

Ah, Yessongs and Tales ... two of my very favourites. Along with CTTE of course.
I know this is immature, but I really cannot believe they wrote a song called 'the clap'.
ewwww.

I prefer Tales over CTTE but CTTE is an epic album (as is Tales).
Do you like Vinyls? (got a turntable?) you can pick up Tales and CTTE on vinyl for about $5 at a used record store. Test drive the albums and then continue your collection from there.

:lmao: Well they really didn't Jamie... That was a typo on the album cover..... The actual manem of the song is "Clap", and is a celebration of the birth of one of Steve's children I believe it was Dylan.. But I'm not sure as I'm not THAT into worying about how old their children are :smurf:
