Is this album like the best jam album?

Almost all these songs are jammable.

I love A Venture in this respect, cause after Jon's vocal escapade, the band goes into this huge jam, its freaking awesome.

(If only they could jam this LIVE!)

And that guitar riff at the very end. Oh my goodness.

Starship Trooper, they jam almost always, during Wurm.

Yours Is No Disgrace is also jammable....so is Perpetual Change.

But you cannot beat A Venture...I believe we should peition to Yes to play this!

YOU CANNOT PEITION TO YES!

LOL! Sorry, that Doors song just had to get out. LOL

So anyways, A Venture best YesJam song ever!

Discussion...while I catch my breath!

LOL!

Hmm, never thought of 'A Venture' as a great jam song, I'll have to go give it a new listen! Now I'd totally agree with 'Yours Is No Disgrace' as being the ultimate YES jam song!! I have always loved the Howe led jam in the middle. It's the one place in all of YES live music where they really step out and allow the music to unveil on it's own - led by Steve's genius wizardry!!! Have always wished they'd do it more!!

PS- I dig the Doors reference....

I agree about A Venture - a song faded out when it just started to get interesting. I definitely wouldn't mind hearing it extended out live, or a longer studio reworking. You got my signature!

HOTS is an awesome jam between Steve and Chris, it doesnt get much better.

I take the idea of a "jam" as being improvisation. As such, and as much as I also love HOTS and Steve and Chris' intense riffing, I wouldn't consider it a jam song since there is very little improvisation involved in it's delivery. Chris' extended lead bass section in the beginning of the song, after the opening sprint and before they take it up again, leaves room for improvisation but not enough for me to think of it as a real jam tune. (It's Bill's drumming improvisations on the studio version, and also the symphonic version, that really makes that section shine - on those versions I think.)

But in No Disgrace really is the one place where they just "break it down" and go off on an extended jam excursion - live anyway. Also to some extent on the slow harp portion of Awaken. Judging by the amazing version on The Word Is Live, they used to really take that part out for a ride too.

But where else do they really jam as a group, in the improvisational sense? The dueling between Rick and Steve on the recent live versions of South Side Of The Sky. Wurm also, but both of these within a fairly strict support context.

Sure. I never thought of it, but yes, The Yes Album is full of jammable songs. Starship Trooper, Perpetual Change, and I also love A Venture, and this is the only place you'll find it. In fact, it is probably their best.

This is kind of funny to me, because I have never considered Yes to be a band that jams in concert. I have only seen them 5 times, so I certainly am no expert, but I can't remember any jamming that really stood out as such. I have always sworn after every concert that they played the music just the way that it sounds on the albums, which is part of the reason that I have liked them so much. Being a Grateful Dead fan, and having seen them live several times, I can certainly appreciate a good jam.

Yes's music is structured in such a way that jamming seems superfluous to me, just like a piece of classical music. Reproducing a piece of music the same way every time is a mark of a true craftsman, I believe, especially if the music in demanding in its complexity, orchestration, and beat. Not being a musician, I am not sure what qualities one would assign to 'jamability' in a piece.

RickyG has got in right. The new live version of South Side of the Sky is a prime example of what Steve can do when turned loose. His back and forth battle with Rick is outstanding. It even got Steve to move a little, which is getting more & more rare these days. Even my wife, who usually just listens to the dvd's, was glued to it and made me replay it a couple of times.

Most of YES's music is not what I personally would call jammable (true, I think The Yes Album is an exception), but every once in a while, a song comes along that was tailor made for it. And when they've got one, they know how to work it.
