No, I don't have it yet, but I received an email from some one in Europe that does have it and I thought I would relay some of his comments.

The sound and video are supposedly awesome...the best quality Yes dvd ever released. The disc contains both dolby digital and dts surround. It has some computer graphics mixed in,(not a lot, but some) and you have the option to turn them off. I'm not sure how that will work exactly, but it could be nice.

He was not overly impressed with the bonus disc. It contains the video for Don't Go, and a documentary called Dreamtime. He said that contains a lot of trivial information. A short interview with Jon about recording with the orchestra, a short visit into the studio, and a longer interview with Chris. Supposedly Chris mumbles quite a bit and is hard to understand. Nothing new there. The past of the documentary I am looking forward was filmed outside the Philadelphia performance outside the Mann Music Center. There is footge of the fans before the concert started. I was there, and spoke to Bob Cesca, who was doing the filming, so I'm hopeful I'm on it.

Sounds like a definate purchase.

This disc definately ranks as the best concert dvd I own, and I own quite a few.

I agree wholeheartedly with all the views expressed about the new Yes dvd. My personal favourite of the concert footage must be Ritual which was mind-blowing. Chris was truly staggering on this epic and the rest of the band (and orchestra!) rocked their way quite merrily through one of Yes's finest hours (well, around half an hour, anyway!). Other chief highlights are Close to the Edge and Gates of Deilirium. The whole concert is supreme. The sound quality of dvd and two viewing angles were excellent and made for a revealing Yes experience.

It took some extra leg work but I finally procured a copy after visiting about 5 stores.I finally found it (1 copy) at FYE.I watched/listened to 2/3 of it just shy of AYAI.I am completely floored by the performance and was left awestruck. If anyone was passing by my window they would have thought that I was a madman sitting alone with a cheshire grin on my face.Unbelievable.I will savor the remaining 1/3 until later this evening and I have no doubt that the grin will be back in place.

I agree that Ritual is quite amazing... not my fave Yes song, but this is the best version i've ever heard...
The main thing that is great about the dvd is the editing, it's the best Yes vid i've seen... excellent cutting between musicians at the right time, the orchestra is integrated very nicely (so much fun to see the girls rocking out on Roundabout!), not too many crowd shots, not too bombastic in the way the visual work with the music, and if it has overdubs they are carefully hidden (at least well enough that i didn't notice after two viewings -- a bit different that KTA!)... and a good idea to make the animation optional, too...
Overall, i think they did themselves proud with this dvd, which even captures the Yes sense of humour, in the Dreamtime doc...
I like the slower version of CTTE, but felt that musically the performance was sometimes a bit cautious... maybe an effect of trying to key into the orchestra?
My feeling was that this dvd shows us that it was good idea to try the symphonic experiment, as there are so many exciting moments (and while the orchestra is a bit quiet, that's better than having the band dominated by it)... but that it also reveals the limitations of that project, in that Yes sometimes seem a bit restricted, maybe not grooving as well as they can...
But we have that to look forward to, this summer!

My fears have been quelled! This DVD is the best YES audiovisual experience I could have hoped for.

The band is animated on this one. They were obviously having a good time, and it's contagious!
The mix between YES and the symphony is perfectly balanced.
Ritual IS just amazing... Spot-on yet transcendental.
And You And I has all the majesty you could have hoped for! Stunning.

There is much interplay going on between YES and the Symphony.
A visual choreography happening between the band and the other players... did they work this out in advance or was it spontaneous? It doesn't matter: it looks spontaneous, and the smiles on the faces mirrored my own!
The french horn players raise their horns in the air, punctuating the beats like a cheering section... the entire orchestra exuded verve and excitement: obviously a lot of YES fans in The European Festival Orchestra.

By the end of the DVD I was shouting like I was at a football match, or a YES Concert. It's that good!

OK: now for a few minor complaints. Not many, mind you.
The band does tend to underplay a bit when the orchestra is full-on.
Which is understandable: it would have been way too busy otherwise... But I miss some of the embellishments YES usually adds to things. Form follows function, you have to color inside of the lines when you are following sheet music. Just the way it goes.

CTTE is played VERY slowly. So was Long Distance Runaround... but synchronization would have been a problem otherwise I think.
Not the easiest songs to execute full-throttle WITHOUT having a symphony along for the ride.

I had a little trouble with the mix on Steve's guitar at points. They could have used a bit more compression and low-end in the mix... The guitar lacks some of the body and crunch we're used to hearing from Howe. I noticed this was only the case during some of the heavier orchestral pieces (Unfortunately during Gates, which could have used a lot more 'bite' imo).
Again, the producer probably felt a thinner guitar sound would be 'roomier' in the symphonic context of the show.
On the non-orchestral songs the crunch was back, so this was obviously just a production choice.

The Animations.
The animations are GREAT! I thought Bob Cesca's work here was supurb. He really captured the spirit of the music. None of the clunky stuff from the Keys DVD... And it really adds something artful to the visual experience. A lushness of fantasy that seems too organic to have come from a computer at times.
Kudos to Mr Cesca for a job well done.

Now I have to watch the 2nd DVD! But I couldn't wait to post on this. I was playing the thing so loudly, sporadically shouting "Yeah!" at crucial moments... The neighbors hated me tonight! At this late hour I'll really have to contain myself now!

So what the hell are you waiting for? Go order Symphonic Live NOW! You'll love it!

As for the second disc, the documentary has its moments, and is also done by Bob. Kudos on the extras.

By the time CTTE was over, I felt as if I already had my money's worth!!! A beautiful experience, this dvd.

Earl and charl8e....I found that the slower pace of CCTE brought more power and majesty to it, if that's possible. As can be the case when one is thoroughly familiar with a piece of music that one has played countless times, there can be a tendency to rush through it. (case in point, though some of you may disagree: the version of Gates on Yesshows. I would enjoy it SO much more if it were just eased up on the tempo a hair...you know, more room.) I felt this dvd's version of And You And I , and Long Distance Runaround worked the same way for me...the slower pace was powerful, and relished the composition, caressed it.

Ritual is AWESOME on this dvd, I totally agree with you guys.

Now for my critiques.
I agree with Earl about Steve's guitar mix. Further on a similar subject, I felt Brislin's keys (no fault of his own) were often undermixed. As if I had to sort of strain to hear him. Particularly when he should have REALLY been out front. And now, tanbar, don't get upset here, LOL, overall Tom did a beautiful job...BUT....there were a few times I felt like pushing him out of the way and doing it myself!!! LOL!! In specific, the battle sequence of Gates between him and Howe. This is one of my all-time fav moments in Yes music, and I was very disappointed with it here. I did NOT feel Tom did it justice. Partly because he was undermixed, but also because of his choice of patch and lack of expression during this part. Actually, during this whole song. I so much enjoy the huge monophonic analog lines pitch-bending, wailing their way through this tune, and they just weren't there. Especially during the battle sequence. So, on second viewing of this dvd, I played the parts along with it on my old Moog, pitch bend and mod wheel heavily in action, and felt much more satisfied!!! LOL!! I'm NOT saying I'm better than Tom, it's just that there was such a cherished thing missing for me in this particular tune, that I HAD to D.I.Y. ....in defense of Tom, though, I thought his organ patches were excellent. And his enthusiasm and love for the music showed immensely.

The only other gripe I have about this dvd is, heaven help me here, (taking cover already), Owner Of A Lonely Heart. Howe just does not articulate this song, nor have the certain rock edge that is needed for a song of this particular idiom. It lacked the chop n bounce n gruff that make it move. NO flame of Howe here, he is a masterful guitarist...HOWEver, just not well-suited to the style of a song like this one. Therefore, I question the choice to put this song in the setlist with this lineup. The audience was worked to a frenzy with All Good People, and then....And, I don't think it has anything to do with the song itself, before all the anti-westers claim that to be the case....I think it was just the rendition of it. It was the only time on this entire dvd that our heros seemed anything less than "larger than life" to me. Aw, well, I guess all I have to do is just skip that one, huh?? LOL!

I thought it might be interesting to compare the setlist from the dvd to the setlist from the Aug. 8, 2001 show in Chicago.

Oh, and something I forgot to mention....
I get a kick out of seeing how much many of the orchestra members are getting off on the whole thing!!! It did my heart good to see that. A couple of the gals in particular really seemed to be enjoying it, and certainly will end up with a large Yes section in their personal collections, I'll bet!! Perhaps by raiding their mom or dad's collections??!! LOL!! Too cool!!
(How boring their next "conventional"gig must have seemed by comparison!!....I can just hear it..."Hey, remember when we played with Yes??? That was AWESOME!!" "YEAH!!" giggle!) This orchestra was more dynamic, I must say, than the one I saw with the band in Chicago. I was pleased at their interpretation, and smiling at their enthusiasm. More converts, I guess!!! Ha ha ha!!!!

A question to those of you complaining about the sound mix. How were you listening to it? In dts, you hear everyone very clearly. While Tom is a bit subdued in the mix, you can hear him very plainly...and Steve's guitar cuts through the room like a knife.

Has anyone else noticed a rather obvios layer change? I get a very annoying second long break right in the middle of Starship Trooper.

Yea,I noticed this glitch also. The only flaw on my first viewing I noticed. You would think they could of waited until between songs to do this.A very minor thing though.I'm still on cloud nine since seeing it.I let my buddy borrow it on Thursday and he forgot to return it on Friday so I've been jonesing to see it again.I'm not a violent fella by nature but if it is not in my hands come Monday morning...

But it isn't a purely technical question... if we can stop being rabid (!) fans for a moment (can we do that???) it is clear that the Yes 4/5-piece is holding back at times, to accomodate the orchestra... as i said, i think it was a fine and successful experiment and i'm very glad they did it, but there is a price to pay... also, given the lack of time to rehearse the orchestra, many opportunities were missed to integrate the symphonic component... hence, TB's keyboard parts being low in the mix, where so often the orchestra might have taken (&changed) some of those parts...

Hi Nightliner:

Yes there is a glitch. As it was explained to me it is called a layer change, having to do with the "flip" from one layer to the next.
It has to do with the DVD 9 format and some machines handle it
better than others.

I'm watching mine this weekend.
It is just fantastic.
I love the fact that Cesca filmed everyone.
The orchestra is loving it and those crazy french horn players during CTTE just cracked me up.

Regarding Char8e's comment, yes there is a giant invisible metronome in the concert hall. Especially during CTTE which is a bit "slow" but the orchestra adds a great deal to the piece.

Yes, I am liking this one very much.

I'm just going to have to watch again later.

Very good.
I was happy that they so kindly included Steve's sound check! Priceless!

It was fun listening to Jon getting cosmic about the internet!
And the YESWORLD bit was nice, especially seeing we're 'part-of' (I wished there had been a bit about YesFans... oh well).

I loved the interview with Larry Groupe. It was cool hearing about how he interacted with YES, making the band and orchestral parts mesh.

And Chris swallowed a fly!

The remix of Long Distance over the end credits was a nice touch (Anyone know where you can get the remix on CD?).

nightliner: Thanx for telling me about the sound on dts. Now I'm going to HAVE to hook up the dts to my stereo... 'gonna need a long cable!

Ritual is the best I've ever heard it! Anyone else notice the Aaron Copeland sound of the orchestra on this one? The drum solo is one of my favorite moments...

I LOVE this DVD!

I have only watched the DVD through a few times, but here are my favorite moments:

1. When the horn section comes in during the organ solo on I Get Up I Get Down

2. Chris Squire's opening bass notes to the Turn Around and Remember part of In the Presence Of and the orchestra's pizzacato playing that begins shortly thereafter. The audience seemed luke warm upon Jon's introduction of another "new song" at the beginning, but you could tell at the end that the audience just loved it. Chris Squire's smile at the end was a pleasure to see.

3. Gates of Delirium. This must be the best rendition of the song ever. The orchestra adds much power and drama throughout. The orchestra, and the harp in particular, add so much texture to Soon. I loved Tom Brislon's emotional pounding on the keyboards during the battle sequence.

4. As everyone has said, Ritual is fabulous. It was so interesting to see it live. The percussion instrumental is probably the most unique and the powerful of any I have seen anywhere. And the way the orchestra built tension there was outstanding.

5. The camera work made for a stunning visual feast.

6. The enthusiasm of the orchestra was a pleasure to watch.

7. I forgot how beautiful Mood for the Day is. Steve truly is a master.

I am only going to include the criticisms of the DVD, because there are too many positives to include:

1) Layer change in Wurm.
2) Steve's solos. Lute Concerto is a masterpiece, and Mood For A Day is amazing. However, I already own two versions of Mood For A Day. I heard Steve play a song called Second Initial when I saw them in Birmingham. Perhaps the inclusion of this would have been better. Steve knew they were filming, why play Mood For A Day again...? Great track though, love it.
3) Why is the Long Distance Runaround remix only available at the end of the documentary? Why not as an extra audio track on the second DVD?
4) Distribution problems. But once you get it, it's great.

The layer change also bothers me, but technically they didn't have too man options. Because of the length of the concert, placed on one disc, they were limited by where they could do the layer change. It had to be done halfway in the show. And with Yes doing long songs, it was pretty much un-avoideable.The only options would of been to either vary the order of the songs or extend the concert onto the second disc.

Just got my copy of the DVD from Amazon. I had preordered it and I think it was delivered quite timely and cheaply. I too looked around the local stores and found it being carried only by the Suncoast Video store, which offered it at its full $25.99... Amazon was much cheaper.

As far as the performance: I think it is primo.. overdubs or not, it captures a wonderful show. Close to the Edge took a bit to kick in, and I remember that being the case at the Philly show I attended. When they got to Gates of Delirium, they were just on top. The middle war section, which can become pretty muddied, was clean and dynamic.. watching Brislin slamming away on his keyboards was really magnificent (I enjoyed hearing him thoughout this performance)
Actually, it seemed a performance letdown when they got to Starship Trooper. Despite the cover notes trumpeting a *shattering version* of the song which has the band and orchestra *lock[ed] into a mind-boggling groove*.. I certainly did not see or hear that. In fact, moving it from the final encore piece seemed to move some of its energy.. unless they all were just feeling wearied by the energy of GOD. I also may have been biased by hearing it as a ripping jam on many tours (most notably Union, when Howe, Wakeman, Rabin, Bruford, and White kicked it into a frenzy).

The drumming section of Ritual was also mezmerizing.. I guess one could watch it just for the three epics and have an incredible show. They didn't seem to have the groove for Magnification yet, which I usually find true when they introduce a new tune into the show (i.e. *Saving My Heart* during Union or *Homeworld* during the Ladder when they started touring that album).

I think the goofiest moments had to belong to Anderson's song break jabber. I mean, he is usually kind of goofy anyway.. (I remember his dedication of *Open Your Eyes* to the Teletubbies), but here, he just seems to be trying too hard to be clever and being repetitive and dumb, perhaps too aware that they were filming this. Another goofy moment was all the female orchestral musicians ( I KNOW there were some male musicians while they were playing) dancing in a chorus line during Roundabout (which just proves the point that white classical musician girls can't dance).

But these are minor gripes... the sound is superb, the choice of seeing or not seeing animations and graphics was a brilliant move, probably demanded by fans like me who cringe watching the Keys to Ascension DVD and wondering why the director has people hanging off cliffs and turning around during Awaken, and if this guy just got out of High School Media production and just discovered the Neato little button that makes things look like they are taped under a strobe light slo mo... I want to write to him and ask him if he can film something straight without playing with the cheesy video effects board!!!

Anyway, I am really psyched about this DVD and plan to play it over and over and over again..

Khatruman, Jon's talks between songs were puzzling to me too. It seemed like he was punchy, as if he was exhausted. It seemed like he was goofing around the most of the time. Concerts like this are probably the only way for Yes to sell its new music. And with thousands of people and DVD cameras staring him in the face, this would have been the perfect time for Jon to spin a tale throughout the concert about the concept of Magnification, interesting stories from its creation, and what the band is doing, who Larry Groupe is, the classical arrangements for old songs, etc. I liked his discussion about Alan White playing piano before recording sessions. These kinds of anecdotes are interesting to Yes fans. I liked his joke about playing the guitar as well as Steve in his 1972 dream. I thought his introduction to Gates was sincere and funny, without being goofy.

You be the judge as to his effectiveness. Then again, his light hearted talks suggest this is a band that does not take itself too seriously. And, that is a good thing.

On the Dreamtime video, I would have enjoyed more takes from the actual making of the album. Perhaps show some of the classical techniques that were used to create mood and drama. Perhaps a little more of the Larry Groupe story, the Emmy Award winning classical composer who gets asked to work with his favorite rock band and says Yes. I think I would have have given everyone individual microphones to minimize background noise. I also would have included a short discussion with Roger Dean about his historical collaboration with Yes.

Just some thoughts. I absolutely love the DVD.

I am a little puzzled regarding the new DVD. Yesterday I went to a record store to buy it. I saw a DVD called Symphonic live (green color packaging) and they told me there was another DVD called "Amsterdam ... something, they have been expecting for some time and for which they have no release date. I don't know if the "Symphonic Live" is the actual new one recorded in Amsterdam since it doesn't say where it was recorded on the outer sleeve. Or should I wait the other one ? Can someone tell me ?

That might be a real good idea. Music dvd's that don't sell, and unfortunately Yes dvd's fit in that category, go out of print rather quickly. ABWH was pulled from the market after about 6 months, and now sells for $150.00 on ebay.

Ok thanks ! I'll buy "Symphonic Live" then. I'm just wondering what is this other DVD (high price, they told me) to come. And like you Rob, I feel bad 'cause I haven't got the DVD player. And no perspective at all to buy one since I prefer spending my money on my soon to come holidays.

Well I don't have a DVD player but I picked up my copy of the new DVD (MY FIRST DVD EVER!) and headed for my brothers (he is in CLEV with his lady) and jammed it in his TV, hooked that up to his stereo and WOW, man was I impressed! It was very impressive to actually hear the ORCH. The sound was VERY VERY RICH to my ears.
I would agree that this is some of the besy footage of a show I have seen. I loved the close ups of the guys in the band. I will also echo the thoughts of some of you on the women of the Orch. Some cuties in there (I should have kept playing Trombone after HS) that made this even better to watch, ;)
I won't go into the songs in detail since you all have said it. Some notes though, OWNER should have not been played, nice try guys but it did not fit the tone, mood of this concert tour. Steve jus did not do it for me on this one, he sounded better on it during OYE tour. I did like Brislins keys work on it. He also did some cool voice work at the beginning. They must have ran it through some mixer. I also agree Tom was waaaaay to low in the mix on some tunes, shame on them if it was on purpose!!!!!
CTTE really impressed me, the orch was a great addition to that song. I did not think Starship trooper grooved as well as the album cover made it to, good but I have a boot version I enjoy more. Non the less I can't wait to burn this baby for car listening so I can EXPOSE more folks to the music of YES!
It isn't every day now that you see a stage full of decent looking women dancing with Yes. May have been a good thing that IGOR was not there for this one! :nono: wink
I don't see how they will do it now w/out a orch, it would seem to me they will sound so bare with out that added sound.
I have not watched the other disc yet. More on that laterz!

That hasn't been said before. The Encore set is just kicking in and I couldn't resist posting.

I'll maybe review later, but this thought.

The world is a better place because Yes is in it and makes music for us; all of us. It's too bad that only a few of us can enjoy it.

Soon, oh soon the light, we love when we play.

We are really lucky, ya know?

To have such a wonderful new work from our favorite band...
Something of that magnitude that is contemporary...

Now I'm going to have to watch it again today!
On my way to the DVD......

Yes... I posted that KTA dvd is horribly edited...so far out of sync at times it makes it painful to watch it...
I guess that's why I don't. Wish I could get my money back on that one.
Poooooooorly edited DVD... Shame on you guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The DVD is AWSOME! (at least the parts I saw!) I put it in late....and fell asleep! I can't believe I'm admitting to this...why do I do this to myself? Will be wide awake and watching again today. This forum ROCKS!!!!

By the way....picked my copy up at Media Play for $22.95. The only one they had at that store. They did have Yesshows and Keys too! You guys are right about that one...the editing really sucks.

It's good to know that the band's most recent DVD has come a long way! I still haven't seen it, but I've heard nothing but rave reviews about it.
