View Full Version : First live album- recommendable?
As my Yes collection isn't quite up to my R.E.M. collection just yet (7 Yes albums, 13 R.E.M. albums), and christmas is coming up soon, I've decided to ask for the box set of The Word Is Live. Amazon says that you get a DVD with this version- has anyone seen the DVD? If so, what does it contain? Finally, is this a good choice for a first live album?
Thanks!

I don't have the DVD. It is a good first live album, although Yessongs would be a good choice as well (live recordings from 1972/73)

There was never a DVD - it was an advertising mistake.

'The Word Is Live' is a fantastic first impression of YES live... It spans the decades, it isn't over sweetened with studio tricks. Some of the cuts (The DRAMA tracks) are rough. Like a diamond.
It's a fine boxed set, and I couldn't recommend it more highly. One of the best decisions YES has made, releasing The Word Is Live (Yesmanagement directly influenced by overwhelming request from the fans).
You can't go wrong there.
...As far as DVD's go, 'Songs From Tsongas' is a fine document, capturing all the magical elements from the last great Yestour, which was one of the best.
Ask Santa for both, you've been good, what the hell!
Have fun!

Well it turns out it wasn't to be a Christmas gift- something much more mundane (ie clothing) is to be my gift- so I paid the £28 admission fee (love the fake ticket on the front of the packaging)- and it arrived today. I'm listening to Astral Traveller for the first time, and what a great live band Yes are. If only I'd been born 10 years earlier so I could have gone to the Big Generator Tour. Damn. Or the Union Tour.
This is the only problem with liking bands that have been going over 35 years!

If you want a great live Yes DVD I highly reccomend Yes Symphonic from 2001 and Yessongs from 1972.

It's funny because I was looking at my discs in the box set, and on disc 3 it says "DVD Video"....
Anyone else notice this? Odd.
