I know they play this almost every tour but I never get tired of it. In fact, It's my all time favorite song by any artist. It is one of their better known songs. Do you think they'll always play it ala Roundabout? Are you sick of it? Is this possible?
RobAdams
05-23-2002, 05:25 AM
I wouldn't mind hearing this live again. They didn't play it at the last show I saw (Masterworks tour Saratoga NY). And I haven't seen it played by THIS line-up since Alan White's birthday 1979 in NYC.

JOE!
You can stick your 'Roundabout' up your ar*e, but I could listen to 'AYAI', 'Trooper, 'Siberian K', 'Perpetual Change', 'Yours', and 'HOTS', over and over again......
Not to get critical of any YES fans but How can you not love 'And You and I'. In fact everything from CTTE is always deeply appreciated. Again i think sometimes its has to do with whether or not you were into YES when CTTE was released. If so, those song must touch your soul in a very special way. I cannot help but be transformed back to speciic moments in 1972-73 when AYIA was new and how profoundly it effected me.

I realy don't min if they played. It's one of there best works ever. But, sometimes a sacrifice have to be made. So replace And You And I for To Be Over. Though I am afraid that this won't happen, it would be a worthy sacrifice.
On the other hand I think that Rick rejoined Yes, just to play these amazing classics again. So I realy don't expect any surprizes for us die hard fans, who don't nessecarily need to hear all those amazing tunes 'again'.

And You and I has always been my favorite Yes song, but they have played the song to death. I missed hearing it on the Masterworks tour, but was very happy to hear it played with an orcestra. Still brings a tear to my eye every time I hear it live.

It has been a mainstay in the YES setlist over the years. Even the Rabin-era YES played this a lot. Still, I don't tire of it. AND YOU AND I is beautiful, and I also missed it on the MASTERWORKS tour. ROUNDABOUT has been played to death. I don't think it's possible to play AND YOU AND I to death.
I just noticed that was your first post WHEELSOFOLIAS. Welcome to a great forum.

On every Yes concert I saw And You And I was one of the absolute highlights, especially the orchestral part in the middle (very intense). I hope they continue to play it. One of my favorite Yessongs.

I for one think they should give "And You And I" a break, and make room for other songs, which they have not played in recent tours. On the other hand, it would be nice to hear it with Rick back.
I never tire of that song. It is just too beautiful.

AYAI has been one of my all time favorite songs ever. Not just from YES, but of all times.
I have to say that I am starting to get tired of it, which is like saying that you are getting tired of the love of your life.
I hardly play it now since I really do not want to loose it.

I agree. I rarely play RELAYER even though it's my favorite. In fact, one of the reasons I don’t play much Classic Yes material is because I've played it to death - because I love it so much!
Catch 22, eh?

I agree as well, Dragonfly - AYAI is my favorite song of all time (not just my favorite Yes song), but I don't listen to it very often. I want to save the magic for when I hear it live. In fact, I bear a grudge against Trevor Horn to this day - when the Drama tour came around, and the band did AYAI, he absolutely blew the climactic part of the song ("And you and I reach out for reasons to call. . .") - and then laughed through the following instrumental part! No respect for the classics. . . I still cringe when I think of it.

I'm starting to find myself wishing they would play this song or that song. I always love to hear AYAI, but I would trade it to hear say TBO, TOTC, or anything from Drama. But then I'm sure I would say darn it they didn't play AYAI. I'm so confused  at this point of the production! My head is going to :boom: !

I'm not able to vote on this also. On one hand i think it is one of the greatest tunes they ever recorded. As Rick once said:"it's got everything that Yes fans love and Yes Critics hate".
On the other hand, i'm glad they are giving some other tunes a chance this tour, like "don't kill the wale" and "America".
Maybe in a next tour after this line-up recorded a new studio album??!!

By the way Rob, not entirely true that they did'nt play "and you and i" since 1979 in this line-up. At least in the Netherlands they played it during the "union" tour back in 1991 and this line-up was part of that........

Easily the BEST song they can do LIVE. (bar CTTE, Gates, RSOG)
I have heard this song live at LEAST 25 times since 1984, in many different forms (rabin, Howe, Without Chris, ) and this is MY favorite song ever. BAR NONE...
Now that Rick is back, WHY NOT? We know he loves this song (see Yesyears video), I could hear it 10 times a day and not get sick, as a matte of fact I have it programmed into my alarm clock to wake up to.
I get tingles up and down my brain when I hear this song live, and it never ceases to amaze me at the emotions it evokes when they play it. DO IT AGAIN JON!

I say "PLAY IT". We want to hear all the songs now that Ricks back in the lineup. I know they have played some songs a gazillion times but true fans never get tired of hearing songs over and over. I LOVE "You and I" I think it is one of the best songs that Yes plays. Especially live. Same goes for Starship Trooper. I could never get tired of hearing either of these songs. I could honestly say that they can drop Roundabout and play something else for a change.

Now that they are returning to Australia in 2003, I sincerely hope they play AYAI.
When they were here the last time in 1973 it, along with Heart of the Sunrise, was probably the highlight of the show so that now they have exactly the same lineup again, I hope they play both!
But truth be known they could play anything and we'd be pleased.

My gutt says they play it on the second leg.:D
To be honest, I'm actually happy that YES didn't play AYAI during this last tour. I think giving it a temporary break was a good idea. I would love to hear it next time although if it becomes a choice betwwen AYAI and To Be Over, then I would have to choose the latter. I haven't heard TBO in a while. Fat chance but what a treat that would be.

Tough call. The opening strains of AYAI are so majestic and mood setting that it always instantly puts a smile on my face. But Turn Of The Century would be fabulous, too.

And You And I is definitely a classic. I saw YES for the first time This past summer, and if I got to see them again, AYAI is always welcome. But it seems like every year, the end squence to the song gets slower and slower, and Alan doesnt play the half-beat on the snare like Bill did. But regardless, Steves 12string lick is one of the most recogniseable and traditional pieces of their music, so actually getting to see steve do that would be emotional.

There's something simply MAGICAL about those opening harmonics that Steve plays in AYAI: I can't hear them and not feel chills. Chills and warmth, strangely enough.
And when played live, Chris's chromatic harmonica bit during 'The Preacher The Teacher' is so simple, yet adds this sweet earthy touch that grounds the entire song just before it lifts-off again into the stratos, reaching escape velocity, and spinning off towards worlds unknown.
And You And I never really ends...
It seems like a window into another dimension, another world where all is right.
It truly IS a window looking into a horizonless vista.
Such a thing of wonder.
If there's a heaven, it must be the universe of And You And I. This I believe.

It is absolutely one of Yes's masterpieces and I think they did one of the best live versions of it, the last tour. I surely won't mind if they play this one the upcoming tour, but if they drop it just this once in favor of a lesser/never played live tune, then I do support that........

Hi. I am new to the site.
They should definitely play this song. I first heard this
song in 1972 when I was just out of high school, outside in my back yard on a funky old turntable sitting in the grass (both me and the turntable!). It was my very first exposure to YES and I will never forget that. There are many other of the early classic YES songs that I would
love to hear but "And You and I" has a very special significance for me.

I still think that was the whole bands fault and not just Trevor's. The rest of the band refused to play the older songs in another key, to more suit the vocals ranges of Trevor. They had no problem doing it for Jon with Turn of the Century on the SLO shows, but back then it seems they rather made it more difficult for a singer, who allready didn't have a comfortable, easy time on stage trying to win a more or less reluctant audience over, then support him with this rather simple solution to a problem......

Yes, you're right. Maybe it would have been fairer to have said couldn't sing it 'in that key'. Overall I think the two Buggles guys did a great job for Yes. I for one (and I feel in a minority), absolutely love Drama. It was the first album of theirs I bought new on release - being a mere whippersnapper at 36 years old. I was very much looking forward to it and was not disappointed with the effort. In fact I was just listening to a Drama tour boot and I particularly like their version of Starship Trooper. But I digress, a simple key change - though maybe a pain in some ways - would have achieved the desired result.
The only thing I'd say why maybe they didn't do it is (and I speak from experience as a musician of many years), that sometimes a key change can for some reason wreck the whole feel of the original song. Sometimes it just doesn't sound right. But still you're right.
Dave.

Hello Hein!
You're from Holland and you haven't heard Focus?!
You are in for quite a treat...
They were (Are, actually, as they still tour... But Akkerman is no longer with the band: he was always my favorite member of the band... Like Howe, but with a bit more 'crunch' to his playing) Holland's finest progressive rock band, and actually... One of the world's greatest prog bands of all time!
I would recommend these albums by Focus:
~'Moving waves'. It was their second album, and the song (Suite, actually!) 'Eruption' is an amazing thing. This album also contained their big radio hit, 'Hocus Pocus', which featured, of all things, Yodelling! Heavy Metal Yodelling... Outragious guitar work on that one too!
~'Focus III'. In particular, the track 'Sylvia' stands as one of the most lyrical songs to ever grace prog rock. Lyrical, in the melodic sense, as the band seldom sang!
~'Hamburger Concerto'. Again, the title song is an epic of many movements, and if you love YES, you'll thrill to it!
Yes, Focus was quite the progressive entity in their day. Lush stuff, on the level of And You And I...
If you buy any of their albums, let me know what you think! My guess is, you'll love them!
Good meeting you Hein!
Have fun, and post more often!

So thanks to Yes ticketing, I have 3rd row seats right in front of Howe, so YES I want some slide (and for me, AYAI is a great way to end the first set... it seems to leave the crowd in a very good state of mind... not too hyper, not too mellow and with their minds expanded but ready for more.).
Having said that, I am torn about what else I want to hear. They've already exceeded my wildest expections over the last few tours (I thought I had died and gone to heaven when they played the Gates, Ritual and CTTE all in the same concert!!). So maybe a few of those "epics" along with some songs off their first album...
It's gonna be great no matter what.

I dont listen to it wen I drive so dont worry. I realy hope to hear some relayer stuff. If I don't and I don't hear ayai i would be realy disipointed.
don't lose touch, don't kill the whale...
But if they Just play a "Soon" exerpt, I'm gonna be pissed.
The emotional payoff for "Soon" is so much greater after the chaos of the first 2/3 of "TGOD".

I'm with Tim on this one... the frenetic, progressive, discordant needs some sweetness to really work (and visa versa).

I'm with you, Kathy - these last few years, with soooo many concerts, DVDs, reissued CDs, etc., have been a real blessing!

Kathy, you're my hero!!!!
AND YOU AND I is one of the most enchanting heavenly songs EVER. I was "Sweet and in Heat" 16 year old when it was first released. And it was and still is one of the most exhilarating special YES songs of it's time.
AYAI has a special place in my heart. I can remember hanging out with my first serious teenage lover in a DC park when AYAI began playing on the radio. I probably had only heard it about 3 times prior. We both fell mad with joy and began singing and dancing around the trees like elfs. Anyway it felt awsome at the time.
I don't think I'll ever get tired of it especially Live.

It really never gets old. They've done so many different versions of it, that's a big reason to keep playing it. It's always a bit different.
Now if it came to a choice of playing say, Machine Messiah or some other rarity, I'd have to go with the rarity. Either way, you can't lose.

AYAI is a great Yessong. Quite amazing to see live when the magic is there. I've also seen the band phone it in on at least three occasions. There are so many great Yessongs that I have never seen live that I would like to see AYAI and some other great classics given a rest...such as Perpetual Change, Roundabout, Yours is no Disgrace, and Starship Trooper among others. I have noticed over the years that while many of these songs are competently played the band doesn't always seem to enjoy playing them. You can tell the difference when they play new material and are quite enthusiastic about it. Just my opinion. I'm still a huge fan and I am just about to drive the two hours to get to the San Jose show tonight. Yeeeha!

It's REAL YES.
It's just not a YES gig without it.
It's also the best part of my (yesfans) name.
Cheers fans.

JUST
PERFECT.
I can't remember ever liking the song more, the way that they played it.
Like a fine French Bordeaux, it gets better with age.

AYAI is my favorite YES song. I have heard it at least 40 times live. I have never been bored by it. It's like a new song every time you hear it in concert. Now, roundabout is a different story.

I've decided that AYAI is a modern day musical masterpiece... Hearing it live actually takes me to a whole different state of being (corny, I know, but it's true...). It doesn't seem like there are instrumentS, but rather, one perfect SOUND.
It's a must!
