IM not sure if this was discussed before but i just stumbled on to something interesting on the Chris Squire website. It has a time line and i saw this in the 70's era section:
Septermber, 1976 Yes begin recording Going For the One, at Mountain Studios in Montreux, Switzerland.
November, 1976 Patrick Moraz departs Yes. Rick Wakeman rejoins.
So if i read this write...Patrick was still in the band when they started working on this album....so is it far to think that he worked on some of the songs that appear on that records....DId Rick just redo the keyboard parts? What gives here???

Hi Proggtr1,
You're right, Patrick did contribute early on to GFTO, but I read somewhere that by the time they were finally finished a year later it had totally changed. Alan White said it "took forever".
Nevertheless, it's said Patrick was upset he didn't get a credit on the album sleeve, and Steve Howe later admitted that they had genuinely meant to do this but it just got overlooked.
Welcome to the site, hope you're enjoying it !

If you get the Rhino GFTO remaster they talk about that. They say that Moraz's melodic ideas were rejected. Moraz later said that he felt that the departure was done just so they could bring Rick back.?

It seems odd to me that they would fire Patrick just so the path would be clear to hire Rick back. Especially since Rick had quit of his own volition, and they had no reason to expect that he'd even be interested in returning.
Unless someone had been in touch with Rick and the idea of his return was being knocked about. In that case, firing Patrick wasn't an odd thing, it was downright low. I like the idea of wanting to have the best players in your band, but I also believe in loyalty. You don't fire someone from a job just because there's this other person you'd really like better.
Okay, I guess you do, but it's still not a very nice thing to do.

How about Peter Banks and Tony Kaye?
At the time of Going for the One, Rick needed money, Yes needed to increase sales. So dump Patrick and bring back Rick. Maybe I being cynical, but I don't think it's too far off the truth.

Rick said in YesYears that while recording TFTO he started feeling uncomfortable with the direction that Yes was taking. He didn't enjoy recording the album and left soon after. Yes still pursued this artistic direction with one more album, Relayer, with Patrick.
I'm paraphrasing here, but Rick said that it was like he and the rest of Yes took two different paths that eventually lead to the same goal (GFTO). He took an egg as an analogy for this LOL.
Anyway, I think the band was more comfortable working with Rick for reasons that I don't know, but I would guess because they had a long history with Rick, having recorded 3 albums together that are still regarded as the best they ever done.
