Today I finally got this beautiful double LP in mint condition. And it did cost me only 10 euros, which is about $9.
I listened to sides one and two, and they are great. Though I noticed that live version of Gates of Delirium should be played at very high volume, because it adds power to the studio version but lacks the finesse.
I've heard complaints of the Ritual solution on this album, but I think I can stand the fade out and all that because this double LP is really such a cool thing to behold!
Yesshows is a rich, triumphant album!

Before there were bootlegs in my collection, there was YESSONGS and YESSHOWS. And both are valuable documents I think.
I seem to like them equally, which gets a jeer once in a while. But. Both are from distinct periods of YESDOM, I think they are both recorded well, and YESSHOWS has the great mid-period of YES documented well (Including the Moraz!).
Don't Kill The Whale is even welcome here: was played with a lot more cojones than on TORMATO I thought.
Alan's drum solo with all the bizarre breathing effects...
Parallells! How I hope we hear that this summer!
A pleasant YES album: and I thought they were all great performances... I could never quite figure out the gripes on this one. A really good YES album by Jove!

I like YESSHOWS...Not as much as YESSONGS, but I just think the song selection could have been better. It should have been a 3 LP set in my opinion, and they should have added tracks like MADRIGAL / SILENT WINGS, AWAKEN, SOUND CHASER and TURN OF THE CENTURY.
Still, it's awesome mainly because of GATES OF DELIRIUM and RITUAL from the '76 Cobo Hall, Detroit show with Patrick Moraz.
I'm glad the CD now has RITUAL without interruption. I really hated the spot they faded it at on the vinyl. Those 'at all's' build up with intensity, which is lost as it fades to end side 3.

3 LPs = 2 CDs! I'm sure they have the archives to fill out the missing pieces and turn this into one of our favorite YES albums!
They say they are going to put on bonus tracks with all their re-releases of the YES catalogue: this would be a great call!

this is the yes album i have listened to the most over the last couple of years. it always seems to be in my md player in my car. the versions of gates and ritual far surpass the studio versions. in fact i can't even listen to those versions anymore. the same can be said for the hob version of awaken!!

...how YES re-interprets their seemingly perfect tracks live, and the result is superior to the original? Why I'm SO looking forward to this summer of YES!
The Summer Of YES! I hope they go out on every limb imaginable, that they experiment and change things... In fact I'm making a new thread: The Summer Of YES: what would you like to hear them experiment with?
How about a new bass solo in 'Silent Wings' or Howe actually approaching Owner Of A Lonely Heart as if it were his own: how would Steve interpret that??? I would like to hear him do an actual guitar solo with notes: or else I wouldn't wish to hear it again unless Trevor did it.
Anyway, off I go......

Wow... I've not listened to the Ritual and boy oh boy... Moraz really adds something in this track! The ultimate Yes freak out part is the side 4, and I can see why some people consider this as the ultimate version of Ritual. Of course it's still unfortunate that the track is split, but actually things are just beginning to happen on side 4!

That's about the best way I know to describe Yesshows. It's not in the same league with Yessongs, and it's very disjointed and uneven.
But it does have some greatness to it, in particular Ritual and Soon from Gates. Gates itself fails to reach the impact of the studio version, and a lot of the album sounds as if it was recorded really badly.
It could have been much better...Jack.

Remastering is nice, but remixing, though arduous, is the ticket: these pre-digital albums were mixed for vinyl: you lose the warmth on CD that was on the LP.
Have you heard the Beatles tracks they remixed for Yellow Submarine? Sounds SO great: Hey Bulldog never sounded right till a couple of years ago.
The same should be done for all the YES albums: hope they put some time into it and give us YESHEADS the goods!
Oh Ahkin: I agree with you on Ritual: Moraz sounded great there!

I agree with you Earl, on the YELLOW SUBMARINE SONGTRACK disc. Breathtaking to say the least...The remixing on that is superb. It comes very close to sounding like it wasn't recorded on analog tape. I'd like to see the Yes catalog given the same treatment. Not to mention I'd like to see the entire Beatles catalog given the same treatment, but thats a far different thread.

Abbey Road remixed! And The White Album!
And the entire YES catalog!
Breathtaking indeed my friend.

The Yellow Sub, Anthology and 1 CD's are of magnificent quality. They just prove how great the Beatles were, the music is better than most anything today. Amazing.
Now Yes needs to really put out some great, remeastered CD's. In particular, Tales and Relayer could really benefit from some updated technology.

I believe in Rhino. They are good renegades, running roughshod through a vanilla time. I think we will be happy with the result.
The Beatles were amazing huh? Wish I could have seen Paul play 'Golden Slumbers' and 'Carry that Weight' this year: alas!
...Must save up to take my daughter to her first YESSHOW!
Paul was magnificent at the LA Forum in 1989: I was there: many tears shed (Hey Jude! Carry that weight: "And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.").
I have a big 'ol sideways Beatles poster framed over my window.
Circa '69.
I have a signed litho of Relayer (Signed by Jon: no Roger, but oh well!) on the wall adjacent to the window.
It works.
Her Majesty's a pretty nice 'gell, but she doesn't have a lot to say.

"1" sounds nice, but it still doesn't have the dynamics of the YELLOW SUBMARINE SONGTRACK. That one goes beyond the Mobile Fidelity Half Speed Masters, as far as I'm concerned.
I listened to YESSHOWS in headphones today. PARALLELS seems to be in mono.

...George Martin. Wasn't it?
Perhaps that was the problem: he is used to rolling tape: all the digital stuff is greek to most of us old hacks (Old Hack=born before 1970-something. Ouch).
My guess is that the illustrious Mr Martin isn't going to part with those tapes without a fight.
We may have to wait a bit. *sigh*
Nothing against Mr Martin: he was the true fifth Beatle. But digital is the way to go, and probably needs new blood to be realized.
It will eventually happen, and I'll toast you on that day!
Earl.
