View Full Version : Songs from Tsongas...Am I Crazy?

I've watched it twice now and must admit I got a bit teary eyed during my Eyes, The Meeting, Wonderous Storiesand Turn of the Century the first time I watched it. Am I crazy?

I get the feel this may have been the last YES tour. Am I crazy?

Maybe the above is due to being released from the hospital last week with heart problems, and I'm only 44! Am I crazy?

Does anyone know what kind of heart problems Rick had several years back?

I MAY be crazy, but I love the DVD and I love YES!!!

I doubt you're crazy Doug but it may be related to your recent hospital stay. I almost lost my life about 20 years ago and spent a few days in the hospital. When I got out I cried over almost anything for weeks after. I was so grateful to be alive and it gave me a new perspective on everything I valued.

Wishing you a good and speedy recovery!

Hey Doug, you're not crazy man! I tear up at a lot of Yes songs, I get very emotional at concerts (not just Yes, the Cleveland Orchestra does it to me too). I had heart surgery about 2 years ago, and I don't think it made any difference - I got emotional before and I still do now. Tsongas just floored me again. It's why I'm on this site - other people who understand how I feel about it. I don't know anyone personally that feels that way, but the great people here get it. Maybe we have music plugged into our limbic systems? I don't know but it's a big part of my life. :headset: :hearts:

You are not crazy, I teared up at TOTC on Friday night.

The brush with mortality oftens brings appreciation, tears and awe!
I remember crying at anything and being so appreciative of still being here after my encounter in 2000.
This site has many people of like emotion and spirit. YES music has soothed my soul for over 32 years!
Rock on Doug, you are meant to be here now, still.

Rick had a heart attack. I don't know anything more specific than that

He's had 3, the first at the age of 25!!! While in hospital recovering, he wrote his finest composition - The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.

Doug, you're not crazy... and you must know that we all hope and pray for your (and other YESFANS) recovery!!

Thank you all! I'm glad I'm not crazy, LOL!!! I'm overwhelmed by all the positive comments. Thank you all again. I feel connection to each of you with every response I read.

From the time I started listening to YES in 1973, their music has always gave me an escape from reality during really hard times. All of your kind, encouraging, and positive comments are doing the same.

I have been a truck driver for the last three years (before that was electronics for 20 years) and have not had access to a computer much. Now that I'm unable to drive, you will all see many more posts from me!

Thanks to all again,

Doug, you probably said what we all think, - and feel.

We are the lucky ones who hold a special fellowship in music, and our lives are richer for it. A certain, but hard to define thread runs through us as we bear witness to the YES experience.

These-days I tend to reflect more on how it is only a seeming minority (lets face it, we are..) that 'get' this wonderful experience, rather than continue to question my own part in it.
Doug, you are special because you are one of our brothers, and you understand what many less-fortunates don't.
I always fear that we have seen the last of YES, but if so; we've got the lasting benefit of many shows and DVD's, eg. Tsongas. Thank God for them, and our beloved band!
Get well soon!

Doug, we all wish you a speedy recovery and no. you're not crazy. Yes music is an emotional experience under normal circumstances which will intensify during heightened emotional states. We are very fortunate to love a band that not only gives us great music, but gives us therapy as well.

Yup!

He fits here.

I had to wipe a tear there, but no worries Doug! We will see at least one more YEStour.

I'm with you brother. We all worry about that stuff.

Great days ahead.

No you're not crazy in the least........

As for Rick's health problems, some of which are private. I can add that he did in-fact have at least 3 heart attacks over many years. One of which was serious. In the last several years, he went through a very serious fight with Plurasey in 2001 his most serious recent health problem. He also fought with a hernia problem for much of 2004. My understanding is that he's fully recovered now after surgery for the hernia. And seems to be feeling much better than he did in 2004. Let us all hope for Rick's good health in the future. The man has fought many health problems through-out his life and is a fighter in that sense!

I am thinking that maybe TSONGAS is the most well done DVD of Yes so far. I can't stop watching it.

My Tsongas arrived in the mail today. If it had been a good day I'd have looked like Steve Martin in "The Jerk" with the new phonebook - "Hey everybody the new Tsongas is here!!!". I was having a REALLY lousy day following several more of same, and that just made things so much better.

Good therapy, good medicine. Haven't found any bugs or anything to complain about yet, I just like it lots. Big thank you to Chris (what a guy!) for holding out for keeping Ritual on the setlist, that is so nice to see them doing Topographic era material in front of the Roger Dean set. Just perfect.

Also haven't heard that many versions of South Side Of The Sky yet but Tsongas definitely has the hottest ending of any of them these ears have heard yet. Woo hoo!

You are not crazy, Doug. You had a life altering experience. You see that we will not all be here forever. You see how important it is to appreciate life to its fullest, because it passes so quickly. Time is Time. And you can see it in the faces of the wonderful artists who make up Yes.

I think they have a lot more music in them. I have heard them talk of doing some more recording. Age may limit the body, but it doesn't usually turn off the mind or the creativity of an artist. The guys are true artists, I think they will go on in some way.

And Doug, the magic of Yes music is that it evokes so many emotions. In light of your experiences, I suspect you just feel the music more intensely now. That's a good thing. You are definitely not crazy.

You are not crazy, Dougnddeb. Many of us feel it like that. I have been enjoying the DVD so much that I had to go out and buy a second copy because many of my co-workers have been asking to borrow it and I didn't want to part with it.

I dig the tattoos. I just got my Yes tattoo last Wednesday, well I got it started anyway. I have to go back to have it finished. After 4 hours in the chair both the tattoo artist and I had had enough. Mine is the logo from the Yesspeak DVD with a minor alteration in color. It looks great so far, but I'll be happier when it's finished.

Well my take on the DVD. I think the footage is great. I love the camera work. As for the sound, welllllll it is great in spots but there are tunes that just seem to be mixed wrong to me. Steve does not leap out at me at times, his sound is too reserved. This is a very good DVD but from a sound stand point I think the last DVD from the Orch tour is better.

I ordered Songs from Tsongas nearby in duncan, BC, and it's always "just wait if it IS on our distributor list[/i]. I came in ~ August 16, but I couldn't get it until last Wednesday: gigging and travel and location. So many small towns here and we are at the end of the negilgent Canadian marketing line.
Fabulous concert that recreates last year in London, Ontario - August 30 full moon in tropical heat. Steve goes too nuts in Mind Drive and it's lacking 'Awaken' and some others ( we got the whole CttE album ).

Life-threatening illness and financial changes cause wacky body-chemistry changes - I'd settle your diet in and make stability and then see how you feel,
Dougnddeb.

I thought Rick W. had first heart attack at 30, then wrote JttCotE in hospital. Double hernia operation last March and off to Cuba. He's always pushed himself hard with music and sports and partying until recently. He showed the mileage backstage last year but they arevall near or at sixty. Your past determines health now.

More Tsongas for me ASAP!

Memories Scooty...... OHHHHHHH those memories, I had to find them in the file cabinet  Them thar memories WON'T fade at all.... Some fo the fondest of my life actually. Tsongas will always be dear to my heart for many reasons. I can never fully explain the range of emotions that I felt on that tour and it's part of the official Yes chronicle.......

Well, once again I show up to a thread late in the game with something to say that no one will see... ;)

Personally, I think you ARE crazy, Doug. You are crazy for wondering if you are crazy for getting emotional over the Tsongas DVD for all the reasons you stated. There ain't nothing crazy about the emotions and thoughts you had. So since you thought you might be crazy when there is no reason for you to think that, then I will undoubtedly call you crazy.

We love you, you crazy man. Please recover well and stick with us for the next YES tour and beyond.
