I saw three Union shows in 1991. All were absolutely unforgettable concerts for me. To see eight of the most important musicians in my life together on one stage was an experience too majestic for words.

I was somewhat hoping Bruford and Rabin would join the band this summer, but I'll always have my memories of the Summer of the Summit.

Of course my first YES concert stands out in my memory...Seeing YES in the round in 1978 at New Haven CT was nothing short of fantastic. I remember feeling goose bump shivvers when I heard a very familliar piano intro. "Oh my God. I'm going to see these guys play AWAKEN!!!!!!"

The MASTERWORKS concert I saw was the best show I ever saw them play...Mainly because this show (Saratoga NY) was the first time I ever got to see them play CLOSE TO THE EDGE, GATES OF DELIRIUM, RITUAL and the LEAVES OF GREEN section of THE ANCIENT. I honestly never thought I'd see YES perform these songs.

Next?

I'm with yesskater, except that I saw the Union tour 5 times.

Eight members of Yes onstage is one time is hard to beat.

Although i have seen Yes live several times, spanning the years, which includes both of the periods with the Trevor's (Horn & Rabin) for me the best tour was the last one the Yessymphonic Tour.

I have only been to 5 Yes concerts between 1991 and 2001. It's difficult to choose because the last one always seems to be the best. I liked the Union Tour because I found it incredible to have 2 Yes when I thought they would split up and I would never have the opportunity to see them live. Being able to see both Bill and Alan, both Steve and Trevor (whom I respect for having revived Yes in the 80's), both Rick and Tony, was simply something I could never have imagined in my dreams. Then I'd choose the Magnification tour which remains a memorable event to me and makes me find all the other concerts I've been so far very dull.

Re taineer - Isn't the last one always the best one?

I really feel it is down to the memories you have of the show, which will also be based on what songs were performed and how well they were performed by the band.

Now where is the ABWH tour on this list?

uhm unless i missed when was abwh yes. Teh members say that they were ther own bad in fact steve didn't want to go back to yes he wanted to do another abwh album so the reel question is when were they considerd yes they are not can not and can never be yes sorry i just don't see yes in it i think Alan White said it the best There were some good moments but there are other moments that are really week" Now i think it is a good ablum i own it and purchased it with my own money so obviously i don't hate it (bought it a week ago in case you are wondering he is only 15 how did he buy it) though it is not yes it is half yes and besides THEY ARE NOT YES HOW MANY TIMES MUST I TELL YOU THIS THEY NEVER WERE NEVER WILL BE AND THAT IS IT!!!!!!!!! do you guys consider squire shewood yes no how about the buggles no or Buford moraz no then why do you consider abwh yes now if you consider the other groups yes than okay but just one and not the other why! (oh and by the way if you are wondering why i'm alittle peaved about this is it is because i always run into another yes priest ready to argue whjy abwh and tony levin are so great and why yes west sucks so i have had to say this at leat 100,000 times but no one ever learns oh well.) ( on another note it was the tour the got abwh in trouble with the laws not the ablum had they said an evening of great music there would be no lawsuits and cosquently there would still be abwhtoday)

Speak to me of summer, long winters longer than time can remember,
The setting up of other roads, to travel on in old accustomed ways.
I still remember the talks by the water, the proud sons and daughter that,
Knew the knowledge of the land, spoke to me in sweet accustomed ways.

So far Symphonic has the biggest number. That is pretty impressive--given that these guys have been around so long. Looks like they are saving their best for last and we all know how good the early stuff is! So it's not just our imagination that they just keep getting better. They really are. Good going!

I think time has faded the memory of some of the earlier tours for some of us. According to the Long Forgotten Yesterdays website that has all the set lists from all the tours, I saw PARALLELS performed in New Haven in 1978. I always loved that song, but I don't remember them playing it at all.

You have surprised me I thought in the round was going to win hands down (with yes melody and a kick ass version Starship Trooper) Another tour boot I recently found was the talk tour
(Roundabout was made for the yeswest lineup Tony does a great organ solo and Trevor plays Steve's parts with a bit more rock and roll) though Union and Symphonic beat both of these wow even though the orchestra was not used to there full potential (No Heart Of the Sunrise what why and why not use the orchestra for all of Starship trooper and maybe play No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience Needed and maybe a few more numbers off of Magnification.) Though I have no boots of Union so I was never able to experience it.

actually from a muscial stand point, i am speaking. the orchestra was far more pleasing to the ears, and i think tom held things together better than any of the keys palyers that i had seen before. and it was more pleasing to watch, i.e he was having fun! (the fact that i think he's adorable is beside the point) at the konocti show, durring "gates..." he was jumping around and having a really good time playing music that he grew up on.

however, the point remains, he's busy and focussing on his band at the moment and cannot do another tour with Yes.

i agree mostly with Tanbar. I can't say i find Tom to be a " hottie," that not being my forte, but i enjoyed seeing a younger guy who can hold his own. It gives us youngens( I'm 21) a ray of hope. And a greater connection with the band. It was great to see him rockin' out and jumping around. Let's face it: the guys are getting old. Tom breathed new life into the sound. I'd love to see them do more with him. But I guess I'll just have to settle for Rick...

05-16-2002, 01:38 AM
Tom was cool and did a great job but I would hardly call having Rick in the band settleing. I think you will be amazed yesmandroc when you see what he can do.

ive been to every tour since 77 except talk and ladder. its really really hard to pick one because almost every one was way better than i expected and i expected a lot!!

strangely enough, if i had to pick one it would be last years symphonic show. i happened to be in new york and saw it at radio city. the best sounding hall ive seen them in, at the end of the tour, technically flawless, very emotional, jon in a fiesty mood, gates & ritual, the orchestra was perfectly balanced, brislin sounded great, everything was right-on start to finish. jons voice was absolutely stunning.( though ive heard other shows that tour were not so together)

next (or maybe tied for first... ) would be going for the one '77 at the forum in LA. we were pretty far from the stage and the memory is dim but the magic was definitely there! (i was only 12 but i could feel it) i sure would like to hear a good recording of this tour.

next ( or maybe tied for first...), tormato tour - LA forum. i took my first hit of acid that night. and smoked some strong pot. we were about 25 rows from the stage in the round, it was absolutly mind blowing and a bit frightening at moments.

the following year was much the same. i was a overly drunk but it was still heavenly.

next ( or just maybe tied for first...) was the 97 show at the warfield in san francisco. a great room for yes. they were really tight, opened with knatru, played revealing beautifully, america,... and lots more great stuff. a real comeback at that point.

master works was awesome but the concord pavilion was a wierd place to see them for me. close to the edge opened the show beautifully. gates and ritual.... 'nuff said. very hot.

the big generator and abwh tours were also surprisingly good. i saw them both at the santa barbara county bowl, a great sounding outdoor place with atmosphere. the big g show was especially strong.

the union show i saw at the oakland coleseum arena was kinda funny. i remember thinking, theyve got squire on a tight leash! then when he played the fish, some guy behind me yelled 'now theyve unleashed the beast!!' it kind of cracked me up at the time to see all the guys up there together. it was more like a bunch of guys than a group. it kind of brought them down and humanized them in a way. but the music was good and awaken was awesome. (awaken definitely had something going on on this tour. i remember seeing these people in the parking lot who were starry eyed and had driven from the last show because they were totally knocked out by awaken. they were trying to get tickets with no money, and even though they werent getting in they prayed that awaken would be played. they just wanted to be near by!) i saw union again at the shoreline and it was so-so.

drama in LA was pretty good at the time but didnt leave much of an impression. it was missing too much.

the 90125 show i saw at the LA forum was strange. there was a wierd mix of old and new fans, the band didnt seem to gel, jon seemed uncomfortable.

oops i got carried away... ill stop now

YOU HAVE THE BEST LIVE VERSION OF PERPETUAL CHANGE I"VE EVER HEARD AND THEN THERE IS LONG DISTANCE RUNAROUND AND THE FISH WHICH HAS THE MOST AWESOME BASS GUITAR WORK . I loved the 1st and 2nd of course. The fragile tour was my very 1st concert for any band. It blew me away. Then of course the next one was Close to the Edge which was even better.

But the Union tour had all of them, on a round stage that turned!! I had front row seats!! So what could be better? I also met Steve Howe in a radio station parking lot that afternoon and he not only signed my Close to the Edge cd but he took pictures with us. He was so wonderful.

That was my most wonderful Yes day.

Okay here goes (after the debate on whether Wakeman is cheesy has died down, Phew!).

Must agree with Tomas - YesSymphonic at Radio City last year was the best show period I have ever seen. After that it would have to be ABWH at the Garden in 89 (I think).

PS - to Rabin 105 - ABWH was Yes - trust me I have seen all their tours from 90125 on and that was the one between 84-89 that truly sounded like Yes (and BTW the Talk tour sounded less like Yes - less so than 90125 even). You may want to argue or you may want to think about it a little. Just because they don't have the name doesn't mean it's not Yes. In the same way I consider Roger Waters more Pink Floyd thatn the Gilmour version without him.

You leaveyes then you are no loger part of yes that is it you may sound like yes and be with other yes members but so what chris can leave with alan and hook up with tony and trevor and abwh can tour as yes and then I would agree with you but untill that happens (hopefully never since CHRIS IS THE BEST BASSIST FOR YES) no Yes was Chris Squire, Alan White, Tony Kaye, Trevor Rabin and Billy Sherwood. Not Jon Anderson, Steve Howe, Bill Buford, and Tony Levin (ort Jeff berlin depends upon where you saw abwh)
Ps to Bataisflow I thought the 90125 version of Perpetual change sounded not only better than the house of yes version (I HATE IGOR HE SUCKS) but sound almost exactly like the Yes Album Version and i love 9012-live great album and love that lineup

I saw YES for the first time in 1978 at New Haven. I believe my sister Pam (luray) was there. I'm quite sure. The next time I saw YES was in NYC in 1979 on Alan's Birthday. I went there alone, but I know my sister went to a 1979 NYC show on a different night than I went.

The 'in the round' shows were long felt by me to be the best shows I've seen them play. MASTERWORKS came quite close to matching the 1978 & 1979 shows. Had Rick been on the MASTERWORKS tour I think it would have beaten the 1978 & 1979 shows. But now after seeing the band in Mansfield on Aug 2 02, I think I've seen a show that has at least come extremely close to being as good as the 1978 & 1979 shows. I think the 2002 show would have been the best ever if only 3 or 4 certain songs were added to the already decent set list.

I would have to say this year's tour is my favorite, based on the song selection, and the energy coming from the stage, just phenominal!

A close second is the Union Tour, just for the sheer uniqueness of the line up.

I also saw the BG Tour, the Talk Tour, and the 98 Tour, and they were all fantastic. I don't think that there is any such thing as a bad Yesshow.

Rabin105, where are you in Danbury? I and many of my yes-loving friends go to WCSU and live here on campus.

Thus far my favoriye tour was this year's, based mainly on song choice. Steve Howe really brings them down, and i saw them in Mass and NYC. I might check out one more tour, but otherwise i don't think i'll see them unless they tour with Rabin.

Because of the beautiful setlist I vote for the Symphonic show.
My second choice was the ABWH concert because it was my first concert. Maybe if I had seen the last tour in the US, I would voted for that one, because there seems to be a very positive atmosphere around the band now.

Hey,

I've seen YES 8 times since 1998. I was 17 then. My first concert was @ the PNC on 6/26/98. That was amazing because I went with my uncle who didn't want to shell out the $40 or $40 for good seats, so we sat on the lawn. After "Rhythm of Love" these 2 guys are walking past us, and they say, "Hey do you want our stubs? We're leaving.. We're sitting down in the 12th row." I almost freaked! Being it was the first time I saw YES ever, I took the one guys stub, and LITERALLY FLEW down to the seats. The got the opportunity to see them next on the "Ladder Tour" @ the Beacon Theatre. Great show as well. I have seen them 2x each on the following 3 tours (Masterworks, Symphonic, Classic). The best show for me would have to be "Masterworks" again @ the PNC. (Yes always kicks a** there) on 7/19/00. My dad and I sat in the 4th row, in front of Steve. It was the 1st time my dad had seen YES since 71' in NYC. He said "They play better now, than they did then." I whole heartedly (sp)? agree!

I've seen most Yes tours. I'm torn between the '74 Relayer show and the Union show. They both had huge personal signfigance for me. The Relayer show was my first Yes concert, and in support of my favorite all time album (by anyone...not just Yes. It's the best rock album ever made). And with Union, (around the world in 80 dates), I had a dream come true fulfilled seeing all 8 of the primary members of Yes working together was no less than astonishing. I think my chin was on the floor for the whole performance. I know they were touring on a weak album, but it didn't matter in the least. I don't think anyone around me was worrying about the Union album. We were all just awestruck. There are no words really to express my feelings about either show.

Has to be the GFTO tour. I saw them at Bingley Hall, Stafford, UK. They were still incredibly popular then (punk had not quite started in the UK) and their audiences were MASSIVE. To see Awaken and Turn of the Century and the lasers (which were quite trendy for the Classic Rock bands then) and the classic line-up was just fantastic. They could do no wrong on stage - everything was greeted with wild applause. Rick did a solo of just one chord - saying it was the first chord of some symphony or other, and the crowd went crazy! It was really funny.
Turn of the Century was so beautiful; they had a backdrop of a ballerina silhouetted behind the band, and she danced all through the song. I'll never forget it.
Also they'd just been on Top of the Pops with "Wondrous Stories" and Jon introduced that song live by whispering into the microphone "Top of the Pops"!!
The encores were Starship Trooper and Roundabout and I remember dancing around with a complete stranger, it was so joyful. Good poll!

The first time I saw Yes was at the Centrum in Worcester, Massachusetts on May 12, 1984

The last and best time I saw Yes was at The Woodlands in Houston, Texas on August 15, 2002.

My first concert was on the CTTE tour in Sydney - that was the best in terms of the impact it had on me - I wouldn't be here without it.
