It's one seamless classic. I think of the album as a single piece of music really. I'll say And You And I, I suppose. I'm a melody junkie.

Close to the Edge (the song) approaches musical perfection.
And You and I is one of the most gorgous songs ever recorded.
Siberian Khatru is a rocker masterpiece.
ALL OF IT. It's one of the few albums ever made that approaches perfection. Not one note unnecessary.

All of Close To The Edge is great -- but for me Siberian Khatru is the defining moment of the album. The Yes sound personified.

Close to the edge is too oldish for my taste!
I don't like it !
Except the 'I get up,I get down' part which is rather good
The songs sound really old and they look messy, like you don't know when they begin and when they end..
I have tried to like the album but I can't,and yet I still listen to the album only because it's yes music
I don't know why it is so overrated because I can hear nothing great in it,can you explain why it's so good ?

Different sentences to the same story, just one wonderful fluid movement.
But the intro to 'And You And I' is another moment of pure bliss, beautiful music.

yessymphonic ctte is my fav version owing to the last "i get up i get down" section-
the orchestras adds a stunning accompaniment-counterpoint whatever to jons addlibbed "this time"-and that is musical bliss!btw get up,get down in chinese is mai, tai-so maybe jon had a few too many!

The symphonic version of CTTE is almost overwhelming for me to listen to and/or watch. Incredibly powerful and beautiful. When I first saw it I thought, "Damn, they actually found a way to make CTTE even better!" I feel CTTE is the most amazing song ever written about life and the human condition.
But still...how can I choose one song from the most perfect album ever created?

You're right Mike.
It is the most perfect album ever made!
You know, this thread is making me realize....I've never listened to just part of this album....ever. That pretty much says it all right there. In fact, I don't think I can say that about any other album. Even so, I can give a slight edge to CTTE, but only because AYAI can sometimes bring me to tears.

WOW! It isn't just me. I, too, have really tried, very hard, to like this album but so much of it is just too wrong. And for me, it's not 70s vs 80s because I really do like Going for the One very much. For me nothing on CTTE matches much of any music from 90125, Big Generator or Talk. In particular I'm Running and Miracle of Life are so much better on so many different levels than anything on this album for me.

Must be kinda weird to be into Yes and yet have such difficulties with their most celebrated album... So, what exactly IS wrong with CttE, Luckeydoug1? Me, I'm always completely blown away with everything on it whenever I treat myself a listen to it.
I'm with Pedro and Bobby as far as the symphonic version of the title track goes -love it to pieces. The reaction of the crowd at the end always brings a smile to my face, even as I sigh for myself: "oh, how I wish I could have witnessed that in person..."

I love the symphonic version of CTTE on the DVD! Amazing! Goosebumps! All that jazz. I'm desperate though to get it into a CD/iPod format, but all I have is the DVD itself and I'm not sure how to transfer it. I've asked other people how to do this before but I still haven't found a way.

I must listen to this album more than I listen to any other album in the universe.
Matt and I were hanging out yesterday, and over a bongload we were listening to CTTE again, for the 800,031st time. There was still new stuff to say, love, and debate over. After eighthundredthousand and thirtyone listens, the album is still a shining miracle of art and expression.
It may have been the 800,032nd time actually. Dunno. Lost count. Damn You Marijuana! :ele:
There's nary a week gone by since 1973 where I haven't listened to Close To The Edge, the greatest progressive rock album of all time.
...I tend to favor Siberian Khatru, but the album is as interconnected as day and eventide. Once it's hit the stereo, I have to listen to it all the way through.
Siberian Khatru, NO!
Close To The Edge, NO!

Tough question, the album itself is clearly a masterpiece. As Jon has said at a few shows, something very special was going on when they recorded this album. I would have to say AYAI is probably my 'favorite' track. That song just never ceases to touch me on the deepest of levels, especially live.
But i could also say the same for CTTE...........

For once, a Yes fan does agree with me.
Nothing on CTTE is as well done as the worst song of 90125 and even Big Generator
The songs of CTTE are not well achieved/balanced,although they are some good parts such as I Get Up , I Get Down ,unlike the songs of 90125 and BG:all these songs sound perfect, and well balanced, and it surely has something to do with Trevor Rabin being involved in the band.
I too have tried to like CTTE,and the 70's but I still can't get used to it.
By the way,If I had listened to the Yes of the 70's before 90125 then BG,I wouldn't have become a Yes fan.I have become a fan because of Owner Of A Lonely heart and 90125.

Hi Folks,
This is my first post on this forum....but I'm a moderator at another music forum, and a regular of a few others.
I'm a recent convert to Yes, and have been listening to CTTE hard for about 2 weeks. Sublime and beautiful....and my favorite track is the title cut.
Hi folks,
I think it was Rick on the YesYears video who described this album as a whole, rather than a collection of disparate songs. I like that viewpoint. Having said that, I think the title track is one of the most remarkable pieces of music ever, by anyone.
The cover's pretty cool too. If anyone knows of where I can get a poster of the infinite waterfall painting that adorns the inside of the (vinyl) cover, then please drop my a line. It's worth getting it framed and hanging over my bed, or maybe the fireplace.

When I first started listening to it, I really really really loved CTTE. But then AYAI and SK grew on me in a big way. But I guess if I had to choose I'd say CTTE is my favorite song. But the whole thing from start to finish is a masterpiece. I can listen to it many times in a row. And when I'm not playing it on CD it's in my head.

I suppose it would be Close to the Edge, although Siberian Khatru is about as perfect a song as Yes has recorded.
I have seen And You and I performed so many times, I usually head to the john whenm I here the opening notes, although it is a whole new song with Rick back in the band.
Another member posted a question about transferring the symphonic version to an i-pod. I have also tried to do that unsuccessfully. If anyone has any ideas......

My fave is CTTE, love the way it has the different movements, a myriad of musical delights woven in together. Fascinating how Chris' vocals combine with Jon's.
I had a magic moment when I was playing it to my daughter - in the quiet bit in the middle, we both said at the same time 'It sounds like water dripping off a leaf in a rainforest'.
AYI is not far behind. I went to see Yes in Melbourne in 2003 and was quite moved when Steve did the slide guitar piece - I think it was one of the best pieces of music I have ever heard. Anyone agree with that?
SK is also 10 out of 10 of course!
Hello,
Way back in another time, around the summer of 1973 my brother got the C.S Lewis Narnia books for his birthday. I think he still has them, rather battered about these days after his own kids have read them too! Anyway the book which I enjoyed most then was 'The Voyage of the Dawn Treader'. In it there was described an endless waterfall at the edge of the world. The image stuck in my mind. Then, not long after having read the book, I was browsing through my local record store and came across this shaded green record cover with odd swirly lettering. I had heard of Yes, friends at school had talked about them but I'd never heard the music. At that time I was just into chart music and glam rock, I was a hug T.Rex fan. When I opened up the cover and looked at the inner painting I could hardly believe my eyes! It was exactly as I had pictured it from the Narnia book. I bought it there and then (it cost Ģ2.14, I've never forgotten that), and I've been listening to it ever since. I never tire of it, and at every listen I hear new things and respond in new ways. It always sounds fresh and alive. It heals me in a way few other albums can.
The same cannot sadly be said for the Narnia books, which I would not give shelf-space to these days, but that's another story.
Best wishes,
Ash

'Close to the edge' was an album that grew on me. At first nothing apealed to me, but i gave it a chance when i was listening to it while working and i before i knew it i loved the album. I really found 'Close to the edge' catchy, and i really loved the slower part 'i get up, i get down' bit. Now i would say its one of my favourite yes songs (from the albums i have) so i will say 'Close to the edge' hands down.

CTTE is my second favorite YES song (after Awaken) but for some reason I feel compelled to say And You And I. These two are so close, both in my top 5 all-time for sure. AYAI still reminds me of my 1970 Vista Cruiser!

'And You And I' is my favorite from 'Close To The Edge,' in part because it is the song that got me into Yes. I had heard 'I've Seen All Good People' and 'Yours Is No Disgrace' on the radio, but they didn't quite hook me. When 'And You And I' came out, I just had to have it. At that time, I was not buying albums very often, so I bought the 45. When I got home, I discovered that it was so warped it would not play. So, I took it back and got another one. Same deal! I try to avoid buying LP's just for one song, but I really wanted 'And You And I', so I begged and pleaded with my mom for the money, and then went out and bought 'Close To The Edge.'
I immediately discovered that the version of 'And You And I' that I had heard on the radio was an edited one, which did not include the funky section in the middle of the album cut. Oh, well, I still liked the song. 'Siberian Khatru' was a write off as far as I was concerned, and I did not know what to make of 'Close To The Edge.' There were parts in this piece (how can you call a cut 20 minutes long a song?) that were really cool, but a lot of it was too hard for my taste at the time. So, I shrugged and put the album away. I found myself digging it out a few days later, and listening to it again, but it still was just too wierd. This went on for a couple of months, my feeling that the album was really strange, but being attracted to it none the less. And then, one day, suddenly 'Close To The Edge' clicked for me, and sounded incredibly good.
Very shortly after that, I bought 'The Yes Album', and I was hooked.

Yep scootwhoman, yep.
Just the other day, listening to And You And I, which is perhaps the most emotional song Yes has ever done, or anybody else, for that matter-
The "Coins and crosses" dual lyrics section:Chris Squire is playing some of the most amazing bass in the entire history of the universe as we know it.That line, which culminates at last during the lyrics,"Watching the world, watching all of the world watching us go by"...has been somehow quietly making me really, really happy for just short of thirty-three years, now.
Sometimes, I become more interested in sound than I am in anything else. The sounds that Yes make, that Chris Squire makes at this point of And You And I, are unlike any sounds anywhere else from anyone, ever.
And that is just at this one section of the song!Throughout, And You And I is quintessential Yesmusic.Plainly and simply.
Period.

''Close to the edge '' my favourite Yes track and one of the favourite songs at all. Great psychodelic opening tune with Steve's hard bass riffs changing with melodic third part featured Rick's organ passages ! It's fantastic !!! ''And You And I'' too strong one but not that as the title track is !
