Awaken. No question. However,Wonderous Stories is always near and dear to my heart, and Turn Of The Century is quintessential Yes always.

I've read hereabouts that Chris Squire hates Wonderous Stories. If that is the case,my admiration for him only increases. His performance on this song, both in the studio and in subsequent performances is,to put it simply and succinctly, stunning.I have always loved the crawling, stuttering, staggered bassline, and his singing is so grand!Especially on the late round...

I can see how many here find Going For The One to be at or near the pinnacle of Yesnesses.A gorgeous, lovely and wonderful recording.

But,very little in this world exceeds Awaken.

But,very little in this world exceeds Awaken.

That's very true. Awaken...it's not only the music itself that blows me away, but all that it brings into focus. It's love...plain and simple. It's the image of my precious daughter, dancing to music she likes, or my son laughing at a silly joke. It's like giving your spirit a hug.

Hi Wild Westie,

How was your radio show?
How do the lyrics of "turn of the century" start?

This is a difficult choice between Awaken and Turn of the Century---but I would have to say Turn since it was the first song to have caught my ear when I first heard the album years ago. The music is haunting and it simply takes your breath away. When they have performed both songs, I have cried like a baby!

Hi Wild Westie,

How do the lyrics of "turn of the century" start?

Here are the beautiful lyrics:

Realising a form out of stone
Set hands moving
Roan shaped his heart
Thru his working hands
Work to mould his passion into clay
Like the sun

In his room, his lady
She would dance and sing so completely
So be still, he now cries
I have time, oh let clay transform thee so

In the deep cold of night
Winter calls, he cries, don't deny me
For his lady, deep her illness
Time has caught her
And will for all reasons take her

In the still light of dawn, she dies
Helpless hands soul revealing

Like leaves we touch, we learn
We once knew the story
As Winter calls he will starve
All but to see the stone be life

Now Roan no more tears
Set to work his strength
So transformed him
Realising a form out of stone, his work
So absorbed him
Could she hear him
Could she see him
All aglow was his room dazed in this light
He would touch her
He would hold her
Laughing as they danced
Highest colours touching others

Did her eyes at the turn of the century
Tell me plainly
When we meet, how we'll love, oh let life so transform me

Like leaves we touched, we danced
We once knew the story
As autumn called and we both
Remembered all those many years ago
I'm sure we know

Was the sign with a touch
As I kiss your fingers
We walk hands in the sun
Memories when we're young
Love lingers so.

Was it sun thru the haze
That made all your looks
As warm as moonlight
As a pearl deep your eyes
Tears have flown away
All the same light

Did her eyes at the turn of the century
Tell me plainly
When we meet how we'll look
As we smile time will leave me clearly

Like leaves we touch, we see
We will know the story
As Autumn calls we'll both remember
All those many years ago

I don't know what to choose because they are very boring.
I almost never listen to the 70's, it's just too old for my tastes.
The yes music of the 70's belongs to the past, and it's not as good as the yes of the 80's and 90's.

For me, it's gotta be Awaken, although the whole album is amazing!
Awaken is tied for first place as far as my all time favorite Yessongs, alongside Close To The Edge, And You And I and The Revealing Science of God...but that's another thread....

I disagree with BigGenerator's post, really good songs on here. I became a fan of Yes through YesWest, but when I heard "Turn of the Century" I was blown away...a very beautiful song. "Awaken" is incredible...I heard the live version on the Union tour, great stuff. TOTC though...Jon's voice and Steve's playing are sooooo nice.

Awaken is my favorite YES song. Unfair to any other GFTO song, so I will cast my vote for my second favorite song on GFTO, Parallels. Turn of the Century is a close third. GFTO is a close 4th and WS is not far behind in 5th. All 5 songs are excellent. The only more complete album to me is CTTE. Relayer is a close third to a complete album. IMHO.

Oh yeah, I'm with Scooty here. My fave Yes song, my fave song, period. Makes me cry EVERY time...And I have listened to it many many times.

I credit this song for helping me survive high school..long story...but anyway...

Seeing them perform it on the Union tour was incredible. You can tell the band is moved when they play it. A significant, incredible, awesome masterpiece.

Overall, I have to say 'Awaken'; though all the album was good.

2) GFTO for it's use of pedal steel (unknown outside of country to me at that time)

3) Turn Of The Century, just because it's so bleeding beautiful. Still brings a tear to me eye after all those many years.

i know that i am gonna turn some heads with this one...but i voted for Wonderous Stories over GFTO....i simply do not hear Awaken as others do...i have tried for years to love this song and it is just not there...i have no idea why either....to me and my ears...it is one of the weaker 15+ minute Yes songs....oh hell...i will say it is the weakest in comparison to CTTE, Gates, or anything on Tales....

My favourite Yes album. Five excellent tracks and depending on the mood it would either be Turn of the Century or Parallels. The former track shows SH at his very best whilst the CS / RW bass and church organ make awesome listening.

Yikes! I'll pretend I didn't read that. The poppy outfit that Yes became from '83-'94 has a few good songs, but it can never compare to the beauty and granduer of classis Yes.

A lot of good songs here, but this really isn't even a competition for me. Not only is Awaken the most alluring song on this album, it ranks quite highly in Yes' oevure. I'm hard pressed to name many other occasions where Howe so clearly ranks as a guitar god.

Roan is a sculptor, works with clay and stone and his woman (un-named) dies of a terminal illness. Roan is heartbroken, but he eventually pulls it together and creates a sculpture of her, putting every ounce of his love and spirit, and her spirit, into the work. Does she come to life???

Read over the lyrics, all other details will be evident.

I just watched this earlier this evening on the Tsongas DVD. A great live performance if it. What a gift to have this on DVD filmed and recorded so well and such an exquisite live performance.

This song is in an entire realm of it's own amongst YES songs. It is an exquisitely shaped jewel of the highest order. It is YES's most refined, art piece sculpture, unequivocally so!! And includes possible Jon's most poetic lyrics. It certainly is not a rock song.

I'm not really big on deciding "favorite" songs or favorite solos etc... it's pointless to decide amongst greatness.

But Awaken and TOTC are the two best pieces on GFTO. Awaken is an absolute Masterwork. I'm going to give a vote to Turn Of The Century!! (as pointless as it is!)

So true.I think you have to start with CTTE,FRagile Tales etc.

For me a toss-up between TOTC and Parallels. TOTC is beautiful beyond words. I imagine myself doing a graceful figure skating routine to it. (Maybe I'm watching too much Olympics.) I find Parallels SO inspirational. I don't think it's an accident that I have come across this music at this point in my life. It seems like Chris wrote it just for me, and I'm happy to live with that illusion!

When you've tried most everything
and nothing's taking you higher
When you've come to realise
You've been playing with fire
Hear me when I say to you
It's really down to your heart

It's the beginning of a new love in sight
You've got the way to make it all happen
Set it spinning turning roundabout
Create a new dimension
When we are winning we can stop and shout
Making love towards perfection

This was not an easy poll. They are all great songs and this one of Yes' greatest albums. Every song is great!

I can't really vote because three of my favorite Yes songs reside on this album. It used to be Wondrous Stories, but since the Tsongas video I really fell in love with GFTO. It seems like a pure Yes rocker with Steve slide guitar, Jon lyrics, and the rest. I just love it... Love Awaken too, but not actually the studio version so much as some live versions.

AWAKEN is my favorite song OF ALL TIME. I use to listen to side 2 of GFTO over and over and over and over .... when I had a record player. About The Round
02-20-2006, 05:10 PM
Awaken, 10.- An all-time Prog Rock Classic.

Turn Of The Century, 10.- One of the best buildups they've made with subtle means.
when Howe bring in the lead for real in the crescendo...magic!

Wondrous Stories, 10.- A beautiful song, it's as simple as that.

Paralells, 7. A funky tune. Could do with a bit more contrast and variation. A bit dense with the church organ all over. The bass-line is of course great.

Going for the One, 5. A bit funky in the bass/drum section but the steel guitar is far too overplayed. A lack of contrast both in timbre and as a composition. But it's Rocking!

Going For the One contains 3 Yes classics (10). Not bad.

Awaken, Awaken, Awaken! It all came together on this track. They really recaptured their mojo on this album. After Close To The Edge, I felt they'd got a bit lost, and there was an awful amount of noodling (I know that sounds pretty sacriligeous but I just don't think they produced anything that had the same cohesion as the old stuff until Rick returned to the fold).

From the opneing track on this album, everything felt right and you just knew the rest of the album would be great. but nothing can prepare you for the final track, it's just phenomonal, moving, uplifting and life-affirming stuff. Classic Yes.

Yesterday, I made the mistake of listening to GftO and then 90125 after it. Yikes! Culture shock! I won't be doing that again.

i'd have to say the ending of Awaken is the greatest part of the album for me, but the song as a whole just doesn't connect with me as much as other epics like The Gates of Delirium. it's definately the best song on the album, but i'd have to say that Going for the One and Turn of the Century are slightly closer to my heart. Going for the One simply empitimizes this crazy energy that I try to incorporate into my music (not quite as much as Gates does though), and Turn of the Century is just a beautiful classical song, and the end is simply perfect. All in all Awaken is becoming more and more my favorite, but Going for the One was the song that got me hooked on the album, so I had to vote for it. I think writing some music in 11/8 time helped me to enjoy the song more too. I never even realized that it was in this time signature, but become more adept at feeling this rare time sig, i can really enjoy what felt like slightly disorganized music to me before. The ending of Awaken has always been special to me though, as I'm sure it is to everyone. It's just love.

"Turn of The Century"
A simply beautiful song. Romantic and touching. This song always brings tears to my eyes. I sometimes have a good cry with this one. It sparks such emotion in me. It takes me to many depths of thoughts and feelings. And of course, memories...

Me, too. That's why I liked the video off of Keys. I dream beautiful thoughts to this song. BTW, it just shows how much better Jon's version is than Annie Haslam (no offense, of course).

Wonderous Stories is my favorite on this one. What a beautiful song. Turn of the Century is a close second. I actually pulled out the original album that I purchased in 1977 last night and had a listen. I hadn't done this in years so it was a real treat. What an outstanding album this is. I'd forgotten how great an epic Awaken is. I saw the band for the 1st time in 1977 so this album brings back special memories. I even went out to my favorite music store today and had them order the reissue/expanded CD version. It's about time, huh?!

Well, this is a tough poll because every song on this album is very good, and it seems wrong to slight the rest by picking just one. However, Awaken is one of Yes' great epics, so atmospheric and cosmic. I tear up, thinking about the ending. "Like the time I ran away, turned around, and you were standing close to me." Who can do that? Only God. In all the world of religious-inspired music, to me there are very few songs that evoke the feeling that there IS someone there for you always, and Awaken is one of those songs.

Awaken is by far my favorite song; i can just feel myself lapse into another realm while listening to it. Turn of the Century hits home with me, and the rest of the album is so Yes that it is one of my fav albums. and i think Parallels is underrated too.

'Going For The One' was a difficult album for me to embrace, in a way, because I felt that it was a comedown from 'Relayer'. It also was different than any Yes album in quite a while because of the variety of musical 'sounds' it encompassed. The title track sounds almost country, to me, while "Parallels" is some of the band's best hard rock. "Wondrous Stories" is a pleasant ballad, but beneath the band's normal level of complexity.

"Awaken" incorporates several complete changes in instrumentation and arrangement, with jagged breaks between them. It has some beautiful moments, yet I feel that it lacks the continuity of earlier works, seeming almost like several songs pushed together.

It took a few years, but "Turn Of The Century" has emerged as my favorite track on 'GFTO', primarily because of the images the lyrics conjure up for me. The musicianship also seems more reminiscent of earlier works, such as "To Be Over" and "Perpetual Change." The song flows beautifully, building up to a crescendo, then retreating, then building to a finish. It is also a deeply spiritual work, expressing an enchanting idea.

It is Turn Of The Century for me. What a piece of music. You can't listen to it without seeing a short film in your mind. Incredible perfect match of music and lyrics - what Jon is famous for.

Turn of the Century for me, the most passionate and moving (for me) of all Yes songs. Awaken a close second, followed by Wondrous Stories and Parallels. I don't like the song GFTO.

Interesting how every Yes album is so different but that reflects their creativity.

Awaken does it for me. If you watch the movie:The Red Violin, then listen to Turn of the Century, it does mess with what your mind may have thought prior.

2. TOTC

Obviously Awaken.

This is the second best Yes album after CTTE imho.

I think we are on the verge of a real prog revival at the moment.More and more stuff on TV and young people showing signs of needing something better to listen to.If Yes can get healthy and get their act together with some new material they could have quite a swansong.

I don't know what to choose because they are very boring.
I almost never listen to the 70's, it's just too old for my tastes.
The yes music of the 70's belongs to the past, and it's not as good as the yes of the 80's and 90's.

_______

how can you call your self a " Super YES Fan " if you don't like 70's YES ??

YES of the 80's ans 90's is good but the YES of the 70's just rocks - it is classic YES and to call it boring is just plain wrong

Wonderfully put and could describe not just Awaken but many Yessongs. I believe it is this quality (whatever your personal beliefs) that leads to such loyal fandom and why, 90% of the time, Yes can rely on this fan base. Apart from all the musical pyrotechnics which, for somebody like me who has about as much musical talent as a chimp, is always awesome, Yes have been successful in infusing their best music with a deep religious feeling that can be interpreted however you want. IMO it is their greatest achievement. It is also the reason of course, why many loathe the band.

Of course I voted for Awaken. It is quintessential Yes.

Turn of the Century is a pinnacle of Yes music. I like the trilogy of A Venture- To Be Over-Turn of the Century. To me they are connected. I love the lyric "disjointed but with purpose" to see how the entire catalog forms a greater tapestry.

Best songs on the album? Its a tossup between GFTO and Parallels for me.

GFTO - has the country start then goes off somewhere else. Great BV's, Great, well thought out bassline at the chorus. The extended outro with the bass running a circular scale pattern while the slide solo gets more and more yearning. Magic stuff.

Parallels - MONSTER organ riff. Cracking bass and drums. Great harmonies. Cool song to play along to if you're a bassist.

I honestly wouldn't decide between either of 'em.

Don't really listen to TOTC or Wondrous Stories - tend to like my Yes music a bit on the muscular side; both GFTO and Parallels are good tunes to spin if you're getting ready to go off down the pub.

Turn of the Century gets my vote. It blows my mind anew every time I hear it.

Awaken is very good also... it's more like an epic, while TOTC manages to evoke the same response from me in less time, like a medium-length novel. And of course Wondrous Stories is like a wondrous short story.

This album however has NO filler.

Totally agree with you. Each and Every track has five star quality and in my opinion the best they have ever done.Going for the One does not take itself seriously.Turn of the Century is justy so atmospheric.Parallels with the wonderful Organ and thumping bass.Wondrous Stories for its simplicity and lyrics and Awaken as the epic.Wonderful stuff.
