View Full Version : Close to the Edge delayed?
When Yes toured Close to the Edge, the did have to get Alan up to speed with the band.
However, you will see by this Tour Schedule (http://forgottenyesterdays.com/tour_listing.asp?s=5&tname=4&SortBy=tDate&so=asc&navb=4) that they didn't play Close to the Edge for about month into the tour. I wonder why?
Alan not ready?
Eddie Offord not ready with the sound effects?
The band wasn't ready?
Mellotrons broke down? :winknudge
All of the above?
I do see that they had warmup bands, but it seems odd not to play the title track of the latest album.
Good spot paostby! Probably all the above.......
:Peace!: WOW! Does this bring back some good memories! :hippy:

Huh. I didn't realize that. Very strange...
I'd guess that CTTE was quite the behemoth to learn and pull-off live at first, and then with Alan having just joined, it would have been pretty daunting...
I remember reading how the song was patched together as a pastique by Offord, that the band didn't record the bits that made-up CTTE in sequence, that it was very much 'put together' in the studio, kind-of Offord's production number there...
Anyway, they probably had to listen to the record and figure it out like the rest of us!
"Jon, fast forward the tape just a bit, ...what comes after the slow part there? Ah bugger!"
Love it.

Hey Earl, your probably right. Isn't it cool how that song was put together by Offord really, And then became one of YES's trade mark songs?

Yeah, Offord really was indispensible to the band's early sound... He had some bold ideas about production, and in many ways he set the parameters for 'prog' in general.
If Roger Dean is the sixth member of YES, Offord is certainly the seventh member of the band...

I guess it's hard to read sheet music while playing drums!
:drummer:
I hadn't known about the delay on this song, not that I'm surprised. It's quite the monster tune.
(As has been famously told) Alan had played "Siberian Khatru" while Bill was still in the band (while material for CLOSE TO THE EDGE was still being rehearsed), so I just assumed he'd played all of them.
It was worth the wait!
