Hi all, I have a couple of Yes vids(In Big Dream, Yessongs, MTV Rocumentary from 1991), and a couple have walked away(ABWH live, YesYears). However, I own none of the dvds. I have a nice dvd recorder, and a 5.1 surround sound set up, so its time to start stocking up on Yes material.

I have questions for the true Yes dvd aficianados:

1) I see there are 2 Union dvds: Colorado, and the Japan release from the Mountain View show. Which is better? I found the Japan release on Amazon for around $35, but have no idea who to trade with for the Colorado show. For sound quality, setlist, and stage view, what do you recommend?

2) I found the ABWH-an evening of Yes Music at amazon for around $80.00. I would hate to spend this much, but is it worth it? I used to own the vhs but it seems to have "walked away"! :cussing: I was thinking of buying the vhs from amazon for around $35 and transferring it to dvd by way of my dvd recorder. Is the sound/video quality for the official dvd that much better? should I just get the vhs again?

3) My favorite band is Pink Floyd, so I LOVE live theatrical visuals. Of the releases, what has the best eye candy via Roger Dean? of course I am talking about stage wise, not the kind that are interspersed later in the cutting room interfering with the concert footage...

I cant wait to hear how the Tsongas dvd vid turns out, and I am curious about the Symphonic dvd as well, I just dont know where to start again, other than the Union/ABWH periods which were only the times that I saw them live...

thanks!

The Symphonic dvd is a must buy. No Dean stage, but great sound and picture.

The Denver union show has been weeded here quite a bit. Take a l;ook in the trading room, you might find an open weed. If not, feel free to request a copy by creating a thread for it. Its not as good a quality as the Shoreline show, but its also free. It does have the round stage, though, where Shoreline doesn't.

Also, if you buy the dvd from Amazon, make sure you can play it. Most of those aren't region 1.

Copies of ABWH come up on ebay for much less than $80. I reckon the quality, and the fact that it's a great part of YES history, means it would be worth getting on DVD. The quality of sound etc,.. is right up there. I don't know what video to DVD transfers are like, quality wise, but I'd go for the DVD. $80 does sound a bit steep.
Nightliner is certainly correct about 'Symphonic.' Add 'House of Blues' and 'Tsongas, when it is released in your part of the world, and you will have a good few hours of top YES performances.
The 'Shoreline Union' is definitely of better quality than 'Union Denver,' but isn't the full show. Regardless, it is well worth having both.

sorry I am a newbie, but by weeded you mean available by bit torrent? I will make a request for it once I get to a comp with a dvd burner...

Weeded just means it has been offered here on the site. Have a look in the Trading Room and find threads with Denver in the title. If an open thread still has unclaimed copies up for grabs...grab it!!!

djcub,

I have an extra copy of the Denver that's a PC only copy if you have a DVDRom. I'll send it for free. If you don't and need a copy that will play on a standalone DVD player I'd be glad to work out a trade for some live audio CDs. Or you can wait until someone offers up a burnerless copy again.

Thanks KTrek! I'll check and see this afternoon if my dvd recorder plays dvd roms. Otherwise, we can work out some trade deal...

thanks everyone!

djcub,

Also look for the Lugano and Montreux DVDs being weeded in the trading room. These are both awesome unofficial releases. A must have in your collection.

Hmmm. I might have to check that out also. I haven't seen those. Hope there are still some available.

Nightliner is right, Yes Symphonic is an absolute MUST! It is the best Yes DVD that I own. QPR from 1975 is also a favorite (even with the sound issues), simply because it shows Yes at their (IMHO) 70's peak. And where else can you get Sound Chaser and To Be Over performed live?
As for Union, does the Japanese version have the drum duet? (Denver has it) The quality of the Denver DVD isn't the best but it is certainly watchable.
Has anyone found a good version from the 2002 tour with Wakeman? I have a boot from Radio City Music Hall that is quite rough, but what a setlist! RSOG, In The Presence Of, South Side Of Sky and Awaken in the same show! That must be preserved for all time!
The ABWH show seemed to be missing something ......... oh yeah, Squire! I didn't find it to be as enjoyable as the proper Yes shows.
Does anyone have a good DVD copy of 'Friends & Relatives'? (It has Hold Out Your Hand, Howe and Moraz doing Beginnings, and solo stuff from Jon and Alan. Mine is a poor multi-generation copy, but I have always wanted to see good, clean copies of these videos.
