View Full Version : Summer Tour - New Tunes Please
Hi all, my first post on YESFANS.com, I'm usually on YESTALK but thought I would check this out.
With YES preparing for their Summer Tour with Rick back in the fold, it is time for the band to completely change the set list.
I have been attending YES shows since 1975 and I must admit I'm a bit sick of seeing every show end with Roundabout and All Good People. Those two are just part of the problem, they really need to start playing the newer material. Rick loved the studio cuts from Keys 2 so maybe they could add two or three of those.
Roundabout should be replaced by Order of the Universe, even if this pisses Chris off, and All Good People should be replaced by Tempus Fugit, even if this pisses Jon off. They need to add at least three songs from the Ladder and on or two from Open Your Eyes. They should really make an effort to back off on the 70's material seeing as they have so many new songs to play.
What's your suggestion for songs they normally do not play that you would like to see them add to the set list for the Summer Tour?
I'm one of those in your camp, looking for something new and surprising on this tour!
I don't know if I'd hold my breath for any OYE or Ladder tracks, but I think your suggestion of "Tempus Fugit" is terrific! They have sort of done a little excerpt from it lately (the "Yes-Yes" refrain) in the 1997-98 shows, and I have always thought the tune was vintage Yes, Jon or no Jon.
It's true that the 70s Yes material is a sure-fire hit with all the long-time fans, but to attract some less entrenched listeners, some newer stuff would certainly be welcome!
Yes became the band it is because of its ability to endlessly surprise! How sad it will be if this tour doesn't surprise us at all. Let's hope for some real twists!

Thanks for the welcome fellow Q
Agreed, If they are playing the exact same stuff that I've seen the last two tours then I may pass on this summer. I've seen them about 30 times and I'm truly a fanatic, but I have to admit I was disappointed during the Mag tour in NYC when they played Roundabout and All Good People. I saw them twice once at Jones Beach and then at Radio City Music Hall, both nights those songs had zero punch, the band sleep walks through them and that translates to the audience. It don't mean a thing if it aint got that swing!
If they play 'SOUND CHASER" then I can die happy

I wouldn't hold my breath, YYY. There's a difference between what they feel like playing and what they can play. I mean no disrespect to Mr. Wakeman, but Rick himself has said that he didn't "understand" the music on that album. He's not into jazz (or whatever "Cha cha cha. Cha cha." classifies as. :D)
:stand:What they'd like to play,:stand:what they need to play and :stand:what they should play.
I can understand this line up never playing any Trevor Rabin era tunes. I can even understand the mindset they might have against DRAMA and ABWH (and various UNION tracks). Rick aside, but why should they discriminate against themselves? Why dismiss all or most of the new stuff? Don't they think it's good enough? Don't they want to sell more of it?
Fans of just "Classic Yes", who haven't seen or heard any of their new stuff, already own all of the albums that they're ever gonna buy. It's not a band they normally support; one or two compilations and "the big album" is all they ever bought. What motivation do they have to buy the new ones?
:bs:
There are those who'll buy the new album for a band they're gonna see soon if they know it’ll get played. They want to know the material so they can enjoy the show more. Performing newer material will not only get older fans to buy it but will keep the newer ones buying it, too. I mean, if all you ever bought was THE LADDER why see their show if you don't get to hear anything from it?
:(
Those us fans who own everything are often those who attend every show ( or at least most.) You really don’t need to play it for us to buy your stuff, but come on guys! Give us a break! Now that you have the right players, go back to neglected, recent material. Show us that it means something to you, too!
:ele: :ele:Show us who you are today!:ele: :ele:
If not this tour, when?

I've always and often wished Yes were able to perform concerts in the same spirit that the Grateful Dead had. The Grateful Dead's ever changing setlist contained very little that was as complex as HEART OF THE SUNRISE, so I can somewhat see how much harder it would have been for Yes to pull it off. Still it remains a fantasy in my musical mind. CASEY JONES, TRUCKIN' and TOUCH OF GREY are probably the GD equivalent of ROUNDABOUT, I'VE SEEN ALL GOOD PEOPLE and STARSHIP TROOPER. I'm glad the GD didn't feel it was mandatory to play CASEY JONES every night.
Imagine you follow Yes on tour, and they are in the same ever changing setlist mode the GD were in. Here's a fantasy setlist for a week of such shows:
JULY 10
Themes / Mind Drive / Cinema / Final Eyes / Turn Of The Century / The Remembering / Catherine Parr / In The Presence Of / Holy Lamb / Gates Of Delirium / Yours Is No Disgrace / Roundabout / Encore: Sound Chaser
JULY 11
America / Heart Of The Sunrise / New State Of Mind / To Be Over / Future Times > Rejoice / Something's Coming / Clap / Dreamtime / On The Silent Wings Of Freedom / Judas Iscariot / The Ancient / Starship Trooper / Encore: Roundabout
JULY 12
Homeworld / Shoot High Aim Low / Close To The Edge / To The Runner / From The Balcony / Classical Gas / Heart Of The Sunrise / Beyond And Before / Merlin The Magician / Gates Of Delirium / And You And I / I've Seen All Good People / Encore: Perpetual Change
JULY 13
Siberian Khatru / Does It Really Happen / It Will Be A Good Day / Yours Is No Disgrace / Long Distance Runaround > The Fish / Sound Chaser / Give Love Each Day / New Language / Catherine Of Aragon / Close To The Edge / I've Seen All Good People / Encore: Awaken
JULY 14
Perpetual Change / Magnification / Bring Me To The Power / Silent Talking / Time And A Word / Spirit Of Survival / Mood For A Day / Gates Of Delirium / Floodflames / The Order Of The Universe / Awaken / Hearts / Encore: Starship Trooper
JULY 15
Parallels / I Am Waiting / Then / Birthright / Heart Of The Sunrise / Lucky Seven / Tempus Fugit / Roundabout / Excerpts From The Six Wives Of Henry VIII / Be The One / Astral Traveller / I've Seen All Good People / Encore: Yours Is No Disgrace
JULY 16
Miracle Of Life / Can You Imagine / Harold Land / Close To The Edge / It Can Happen / Doors Of Sleep / Turn Of The Century / South Side Of The Sky / Dance Of A Thousand Lights / The Revealing Science Of God / The More We Live - Let Go / And You And I / Encore: Siberian Khatru
But since Yes is not the sort of "whatever happens happens" band the Dead were, I don't expect to ever see much diversion in the bands' set list. I wouldn't mind if they dropped I've Seen All Good People. I do think Roundabout should stay in the set, but not as the encore. I think opening with Roundabout would give the song a new life.

I must say, i-and-i, this was one of the most satisfying posts I've read in some time. You've obviously put a lot of thought not only into the band's tunes but also in to the individual members' solo material. (I also noticed the "forbidden" albums', presence in the various set lists.) Well done!
The idea of a revolving set list is, of course, a bit much for this band. Having to be "up to speed" on this many tunes that are this complex would be incredibly difficult. It's a great dream though!

Perhaps they could change it up a bit more than ususal. Please?

A little of a surprise would be a wonderful nod to all the fans that have been complaining about the ending and encore. They are very anal, and I don’t expect them to be changing their setlist nightly, but they could have a few different songs rehearsed as the encore and alternate them on different nights.
Think how awesome it would be to sit there waiting for them to come back for just one more without really knowing which one they are going to play.
Opening with Roundabout is a GREAT idea!

I agree! Roundabout would be a great opening tune.

...espcially July 13th and July 14. Those shows had incredible set lists!
If YES did their sets like i-and-i suggested, I would have seen them over 200 times (like I have the Dead). :-)

Glad y'all seem to like my imaginary set list. Dreamtime begins where every song is the perfect place.
200 Dead Shows? What wonderful memories you must have gt76yesman. I'm not sure how many shows I've seen, but I'm estimating around 120-150. I lived on tour for a while. Most of the time tickets just came my way for free, from friends who bought extras and didn't care if I paid them. The Dead shows were the biggest party I've ever been to in my life. So many memories of watching them play so many different songs. It was always great to watch them play HELP ON THE WAY > SLIPKNOT > FRANKLIN'S TOWER; THE OTHER ONE; WHARF RAT; MORNING DEW; SHAKEDOWN STREET; THROWING STONES; BIRD SONG; ESTIMATED PROPHET > EYES OF THE WORLD and SCARLET BEGONIAS > FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN to name just a few of the best.
It was easier for the Dead to diversify their setlist, due to the 'we're just jammin' nature of the group. YES are certainly restricted by more difficult arrangements that I'm sure require more rehearsal. I could only imagine the train wreck that might occur if YES just decided to try FUTURE TIMES / REJOICE without having rehearsed it.

...I certainly saw the Dead have a few train wrecks but they usually would just turn it on harder. I remember when they started playing Slipknot again there were some very shaky points, but that never bothered me as I would rather see them try and mess up then not try.
That isn't the same as YES music. It is so complex it often sounds like jamming but is just highly organized. I loved having both worlds in my life.
