Has anyone heard any news on this?

Rhino Records will release "The Word Is Live," a three-CD box set of YES concert material spanning the band's thirty-five-year history, on August 23rd.

That'll be a heck of a birthday present. I really looking forward to this one. Have been for about 3 years now!

Okay, this is just NOT enough info. Where'd you see this at pacman? Oh, some place easy like YesWorld?

Hey, I'll just hold my breath. :D

It's an impressive set, but I'm still baffled as to why it stops at 1988.

It's an impressive set, but I'm still baffled as to why it stops at 1988.

An obvious possible explanation is because that's when Yes left Atlantic and Rhino, as part of WEA, only have the rights to what was recorded when Yes were signed to Atlantic. To include later material, while by no means impossible, would have required special negotiation and costs Rhino more.

The set also seems specifically designed to complement past releases and Yes's live work since 1988 is covered pretty well by past releases. Recent years are very well covered!

YesWorld has some details. A track list was leaked and posted here, among other places. I've got details at the Where Are They Now? website, http://www.bondegezou.demon.co.uk/wnyesm.htm#livebox . There's some great stuff -- Yes fans are in for a treat.

Has anyone heard any news on this? ...

If you look back to the beginning of March, the 3-disc song lists were already made available. It was supposed to have been released May 10. Wasn't this release known about in February?

I really wonder why Yesworld cannot confirm more information about this release - there's more info on Amazon or Play.com than there is on YW.

It's meant to be out next month and having been delayed for years couldn't they at least confirm the tracklisting and preview the artwork?!

I remember Rick saying a few years back that 'Yes fans must have the patience of Job (biblical character) - well that certainly continues to be true.

I can't wait to hear "America" with Tony Kaye on keys.

"Awaken" from 1979 will be awesome as well. And all those Drama era rarities!!!!

And how about a real live version of "Owner..." finally!!!

We'll just be missing the "Talk" album live now.

Henry - don't you have the lowdown on this - "a slip of the tongue by Chris"?

It's on the Promo. 16 minute of America from Crystal Palace Bowl 1971. Wasn't this Kaye's last show, before being replaced by Wakeman?
I hope you like it. To be honest, I prefer Rick's version, but it is worth hearing for historical value, and - as you would expect - the quality is much better than the boots available from that era.

I can't wait to hear "America" with Tony Kaye on keys.

I'm really not sure what is going on. A 3CD version has been produced and no official source has ever confirmed the 2 CD/1 DVD arrangement. However, something is definitely going on with the third disc. At this time, I'm not certain what we'll get for that third disc. The first two discs are great though!

That's how it did appear on Amazon, but when I've checked recently and today, Amazon.co.uk shows it as a 3CD release. Play.com still show it as having a DVD for the 3rd disc, but, while cheap, they're not known for being that accurate! Amazon.com shows it as 3 CDs too.

A-HA!! I just looked on AMAZON and PLAY in the UK and now suddenly the price of the 3 cd box set has jumped from £17.99 to £39.99 on AMAZON and £41.99 on PLAY!! I think this is WAY too expensive for a 3cd set. I picked up the GENESIS 3cd PLATIMUM COLLECTION brand new for £10.97 and I have got other 3 cd sets that cost nowhere near this. I was really looking forqward to this release ( even if there is STILL no stuff from the TOPOGRAPHIC tour on it ) but now at this price they can shove it!! Another bloody YES rip-off.

Well, well well. I am amazingly suprised that no-one has replied to my last post ( above ) from over 3 weeks ago. It looks like you are all indeed quite prepared to fork out £39.99 for a 3 cd set ( which IS just a complete rip off - no debate on that ).

I agree that £40 is way too much. ($70), and I will not pay that.
However - I will buy it, but probably ask someone in USA to buy it, and ship from there, where it will definitely cost much less.
From what I have heard so far, it is worth getting.

Regards, Brian

I for one am excited about this set, partcularly to hear the Crystal Palace tracks and another version of "It's Love!" I only know the one from Gaelic Park in 1971.

But I'm baffled as to why they keep releasing shortened versions of "For Everyone." The original has a killer bass solo at the end and lasts about 8 minutes or so. The version that was on Something's Coming/Beyond and Before faded out before the bass solo, and from the looks of this one, it will be the same (track time is listed at about 4 minutes). What's the deal?

I managed to find a promo of the set (a "work CDR version") therefore, I don't know if it's the finished product or not.

But it sounds great, and I plan to buy it when it comes out. And it's clear that these recordings are the real deal, with no overdubs. An "official bootleg" compilation, if you will!

It seems rather bizarre not to buy the set because one particular song is omitted. More to the point, I hope nobody is intending to weed any of the material on the album. If it's officially available, it shouldn't be being weeded!

We review these things if official releases come through at a later date on weeds in the system.

Of course the dilemma is that most weeds cover a whole show and this official release picks up tracks from here and there.

But Im think the track listing sounds exceptional. So many songs I cannot wait to hear, America from Crystal Place well all of the stuff from Crystal Palcae really. Sound Chaser, the Drama era stuff, the earlier stuff, along with a smattering of classics. It looks an excellent package to me.

I can't wait for this. "We can fly from here" actually sounds pretty cool. I'm pretty sure that I've never heard that before. I missed the whole Drama tour.
In fact I was thinking how, in the '70's, YES was HUGE on Long Island. Massive.
But after '79, it was like a scattering of the tribes; many old fighters past just gave up on the group back then.

But man, I sure do cough up a lot of dough on this group. Ultimate Yes. Penultimate. In a Word. The Word is. Remasters. Re-re-masters.

But, ("ultimately"), it's all worth it!

Yesterday while absent mindedly channel surfing I stumbled across a blurb on MSNBC,an entertainment oriented portion of their Sunday afternoon programming.Promo for The Word Is Live replete with video clip(specifically Jon singing All Good People...whereabouts in time unknown, but it was at least post-Trevor R.).

They seemed to be indicating a general release date for this week(here in the USA).I cannot be absolutely sure, because I just caught the end of the promo spot. But,otherwise I don't think they'd be on the air!

I was listening to the first disc of The Word is Live. The material from The Yes Album tour is revelatory: here is a band full of energy, charging through these songs, making them seem fresh even though we've heard them so often before.

Bruford's drumming is stupendous: sometimes dominating, but -- like all the band members -- laying back when need be. Kaye also has the opportunity to shine: his organ playing is nothing like the sort of keyboard histrionics we became used to in prog, but it's great, works really well. The longer "America" is interesting: lots from Howe I hadn't heard before. "It's Love" offers a showcase for Squire.

The sound quality is good too: way better than any boot I've heard from this period.

got this last night at Tower, which sells new releases Mondays at midnight. Guess I'm a diehard after all!

Anyway YES first disc is stunningly exciting, what a thrill to finally hear Astral Traveler and Everydays with Steve.....I've always thought Steve's playing was at its white hot peak right when he joined the band and its a thrill to have an entire hour of primo 1971 Howe/Bruford Yes in glorious sound. America is nice too, and even different from a bootleg show I have from just a month earlier in Germany....seems this number went through quite a bit of changes before being recorded a year later.
Haven't had a chance to listen to much else but Awaken, and that too is a thrill---the opening rock section played at a nice quick clip, the cosmic bits at the climax sounding very druggy with swirling pedal steel and keys.

Kudos also to Rhino for a great book---lots of hot photos, and great fan reminices. Most importantly they let the music speak for itself---none of the typical dull box set commentary which walks you through the set track by track. Refreshing!

My only complaint is why nothing from the classic Howe/Wakeman/Bruford group? I've always wanted to hear this lineup do HOTS and Roundabout. Nothing against Alan but I just love how the band cooked with Bill behind the kit. At first I thought well maybe there just wasn't anything of high enough sound quality available. But the BBC sessions and Drama material on this set is pretty rough for a major label release. So why the big jump from 1971 to 1976?

All in all though, a dream come true to have this great material relased in so loving a fashion. Thank you Yes and Rhino!

Yes,gleeman.Yes!Always nice to come to the site with alot to say and find that a like-minded individual has already done most of the thinking for one...!

The Word Is Live is beautiful! As just a book,it's fantastic.Got my bang for a buck out of it before ever a note of music from the discs hit the air.The fan and musician tributes are just so great!Tears in my eyes merely reading. We are not alone,I am not alone! Our feelings toward the band are shared by so many.

As I type to you,the early stages of disc 1-the early stages of their career are unfolding most pleasingly into my ears. It's a beautiful thing, this is.

Just had to get up today and rush out and make the purchase. My youngest son came with me.He's always great to have along on any such expedition,he's one of those people who soften the inevitable bumps and obstacles that arise(nearest ATM for our bank down for service, first place we went holding cash with intent to buy,a Coconuts, had yet to stock...).In the end,we went with our original plan, and the area's largest FYE did indeed have it in stock. All it took was a read through, after I called my sister to let her know I was "in possession",and I was gone. After the read through, another call to her to tell her of my(predictably!)maudlin reaction.

Now Your Is No Disgrace, the first time I've ever heard a live version with Bill Bruford on drums is playing, and I find myself thinking "that had to be Steve on Everydays!"(a quick check, and yep,Steve, and also he on Astral Traveller-one of my favorite "old" [lol] Yestunes...my ears still serve me well, although I type to you in the reading glasses I have recently had to employ...my eyesight was always so good....now my arms aren't long enough!----oh,yeah!gleeman already addressed this!LOL!Steve, that is,not my eyesight...)...

They are cooking through this version of YIND!

This and Tsongas in two weeks,is anyone feeling at least a little better about the More Drama disappointment?!

Anyway, upshot is-The Word Is Live is beautiful!

Did I mention that it's beautiful?!

It's beautiful.

I don't think Yes will play live any more.

Alan White seems to think different based on what he said to Don Cassidy last July so I think we will see at least one or two more tours.

I just got my copy of The Word Is Live today. The defenite hilights for me are the songs from Crystal Palace (the playing has an almost Who Live at Leeds energy to it, unreal.) 1971 and the late 70s material.

It's great to have Go Through This and We Can Fly From Here on an official Yes cd. The sound isn't perfect but it's better than any boot I've heard. The rehersal version of Go Through This on the Drama remaster has nothing on the MSG live version with vocals. I've been listening to the Hartford '80 version for years. Steve was a wildman when they played it live. I'm very glad it was included.

Ok Amazon, it's 8/23 and I am still waiting for confirmation that this has shipped. I've read the above early reviews. I've played "We Can Fly From Here" over and over again and watched the electronic postcard with its little snippet of live AGP. I've also avoided playing the sound samples at Rhino's site as I need the experience of being surprised and listening to the whole track for the first time. So now I implore you--I must have my copy of TWIL and I can't wait much longer. I won't be held responsible for what might happen if I don't get it soon. So Amazon Gods please make this happen and make it happen soon. Thanks. Rich

I got it!....but,it wasn't easy.I decided to get it on my lunch hour today. The closest one(Tower Records) to my work was over 10 miles.Well, first mapquest directions were way off.Big shock there.I finally find the store after 15 minutes of looking.I proceed to the "CD BOX SET" section.Nothing.I go to the regular cd section.Nothing.I noticed there was a "DVD BOX SET" section so I start heading towards it.I had to go through the "MUSIC DVD" section to get there.I figured I'd check there first. No Yes in the Y's.I did find Yes Acoustic and Yes Greatest Video Hits above the Rap compliation dvd's.I finally found it in the W's.I commented to the teen something cashier that they should move them to the "CD BOX SET"(pointing to the front of the box where it says "3 CD Set").His response was refreshing as well as reassuring and I quote "UHHHH".The 50 mile commute home tonight was worth the quest.I'm half way through disc 2.

I got my copy of The Word is Live today--the only copy my local Best Buy had! I haven't really had a chance to listen to it yet, except a song here and there, but the packaging is nice.

I have one major gripe about the set--it should absolutely have been 4 discs! Why oh why is there nothing after 1988? Granted, some of this time period is adequately covered on live CDs and DVDs, but then again, it seems like we already have a few live versions of Siberian Khatru, yet it's on there. In any case, live material from the Talk, Open Your Eyes, and Magnification tours really should have been included. I'd have loved to have had the acoustic version of Children of Light that was played on the Open Your Eyes tour. Oh well, maybe next time. I can't imagine this will be the last release like this, when the band said they were sifting through 80-90 CDs worth of material to compile this set.

I've listened already(got the set today...) to the majority of it,and you will be pleasantly surprised by much of it.The older material resounds with Bill Bruford and Chris Squire shining bright. The Moraz era stuff is resplendent. However,as is the case with all things Yes,further review is required(Do we not know this only too well already?!)...

Wow, I am just finishing Awaken and while listening I was reading the section that 70s show Madison Square Garden and a whole flood of memories swirled back. Having been fortunate to be at one of these shows I too remember the Full page ads in the NY Times announcing the arrival of YES in New york, the rush to get tickets, the sights, sounds and smells of midtown Manhattan, Particularly the hot pretzels being sold outside of the garden ( This has been a real cool flashback).
Over the past few weeks it has been an odd time for YES fans, and a controversial time as well. I have been Listening to yes for thirty years and had platinum packages at the Turning Stone ( talk about depression). What strikes me funny though the depression did not last due to the new live CD, The great people here, and the comfort in knowing that whether or not YES ever tours again or puts out new material they ARE the greatest musicians in the last 35 years and for the enjoyment they have all given us in those years a hearty THANK YOU is offered Thanks for reading , Chris

Actually Dan I think it might be the extreme running time of Disc two that's the problem--over 79 minutes! I've had CD players that couldn't handle discs over 76 minutes or so. Something about the angle of the laser as it reaches that far out to the edge of the disc casuses some possibly older players to skip.

I totally agree that it should have been four discs. But I think the fourth disc should have filled in the 71-76 gap. We've got scores and scores of live stuff from KTA on. And we've heard Alan play the old standards over and over and over. What we need is more stuff from the all time greatest line up of Howe Bruford Wakeman Squire Anderson. And the rest of that fourth disc could be filled up with a side or two from the Tales tour---another grail that we've yet to see officially released.

Makes me hope (perhaps naively?) that more archival stuff will be released officially if this set sells well to the fans.

Example: Perpetual Change and Long Distance Runaround/The Fish from Yessongs were from a concert(s) in 1971-2 on the Fragile tour. How about a release of that complete show? Or one of the European GFTO dates that gave us Parallels, Going For the One, and Wonderous Stories from Yesshows?

IF a professionally-recorded live Tales show is out there...now there's a pipe dream! :radiotape :radiotape

Yeah, I mean the fact that this box set skips right over the absolute peak of the band's artistic and popular success makes me wonder if they've got some complete shows up their sleeve. Maybe they felt that the fragile/CTTE/TFTO era was already well represented by Yessongs and Yesshows. But I'd forgive them this gap in the box set were we to get a complete Fragile tour show or a complete Tales show. Especially with the remix and mastering technology available today. For instance, Sound Chaser and Siberian Khatru on TWIL come from the same show as Ritual and GOD on Yesshows, but how much better the mix is on TWIL!

I was pleasantly surprised to see TWIL listed in iTunes on the release date. I downloaded this morning and I am enjoying the 70-71 set very much. My collective comments to some of the points posted in this thread so far:

1) hopefully Yes will pursue the Vault strategy that the Dead has done so well. B/W a built in digital distribution channel through iTunes and/or a Yes branded site (or Rhino site) the band has a huge inventory of great shows that they could digitally polish and release to a fan base that would undoubtedly make meaningful purchases. Maybe we're not as many as the Dead, but Yes fans are a meaningful #.

2) Leaving out the Fragile/CTTE era is a bit disappointing, but I am sure that future Vault issues could uncover some gems from that era (SSOTS, LDR,Fish...).

3) I too would like to see an official release from the TALK era, but there are a # of very good soundboard boots out there that certainly can hold me over. I would like to have seen additional Big Generator and/or an expanded, remastered CD release of 9012Live that would include the entire concert.

4) How about Machine Messiah or Silent Wings thrown on TWIL. The '78 Starship Trooper had a killer Wakeman solo with some incredible Moog effects throughout.

5) I agree that the coverage of official and soundboards out there for 97 through the Ladder is sufficient. I would like to see the Tsongas DVD in a CD release (aka Rush from Rio) and would not mind having the Masterworks tour on an official release either.

Let's go guys - your fans are ready to support you for the opportunity to have our own pieces of the YES VAULT!

Same thing here. I returned my copy. I really hope it's not my player.

Love the set, but the quality of the Drama material is absolutely hideous. It's unlistenable. I have dozens of Yes audience recordings from the '70's that are much better. I can't believe that's the best quality recording of that tour in the vault.

The Crystal Palace '71 stuff is killer. I love to hear Bruford's funky, almost-jazz drumming with Yes.

Cobo Hall, QPR, and the '78 stuff is fantastic too.

And yes! More from 71-76 please. They've got all of QPR '75 and God knows what else, as well as the rest of Crystal Palace.

Dan,

If you are playing this on your PC drive at work and it's what's skipping I recommend that you don't. You can damage your drive. Many older drives are not designed to read overburn information. I do think that there are drives that may have a flash to remedy the problem but you would have to visit the drive manufacturer's website. If it played fine on your boom box buying another copy is not going to fix the problem. The solution is to buy a newer drive.

I'm surprised no one has commented on Chris' vocal self-accompaniment of his bass solo on "It's Love." i haven't decided whether it's hilarious or brilliant yet, but it's compelling to listen to. And what soul!!

This set should debunk the myth that Yes has no soul. Not one that has a lot of currency on this space, I know, but the thing that struck me -- apart from the kind of crappy sound quality of most of it, which doesn't kill it for me -- is how much FIRE they played with. The one constant through the thing is that every song just f--king COOKS. This is passionate, soulful, playing; disciplined swing. Really exuberant performances. And even thoigh the DRAMA sound quality sucks, "Go Through This" cuts throigh it with its energy.

Easily Yes' most enjoyable release since YESSYMPHONIC, I think.

Got mine on Tuesday and overall I am very satisfied! I too could go on and on about what was omitted, and how it could be better-like more Wakeman, some Igor and Billy era stuff, some Tales, etc. But I will instead dwell on the good, and not just the good, but the awesome! First, the versions of "Awaken"(My all time no.1Yessong), America, and Sound Chaser are the best versions of these songs I think I've ever heard, and I own all of the commercial versions plus I have over 100 boots so thats saying alot!!!! Plus "Future Times/Rejoice", and "Yours is no disgrace" are very close to perfect. The whole first Disc is awesome, esp. for Bruford fans, except for Jon's voice on It's Love(Is that really him?-sounds more like Robert Plant!) The Buggle era stuff is nice too-good mix, and Rabin really rips on Hold On, and Shoot High Aim Low. IMO the three aforementioned songs(Awaken,America, and SC) make it worth $40 hands down!!!!

Not the greatest sound quality, but the intensity level of the performances was off the charts. The same is true of virtually ALL of disc 1. I haven't delved too deeply into disc 2 yet. I plan to do that in a couple of days.

It definitely seems like they picked the material on the basis of the intensity level. There is some crappy sound quality and a flubbed note here and there, but all of the stuff I've listened to so far were performances that the band really seemed to be FEELING!!!!

Amen to that.

I too think that these performances were more-or-less chosen based on their emotional intensity rather than either technical perfection or crystal-clear sound.

Kind of like your favorite bootleg. You know...the one that doesn't sound all that hot, but MAN...what a performance!

I've been referring to this as "Yes- The Official Bootleg".And I hope it's volume 1. But time will tell, right?

Funny thing is: I'm sure this was partially done so that Yes could get a piece of the bootlegger's pie. And that's great---it's about time. However, I'm finding that it's only whetting my appetite. LOL....

Hello, I'm from the UK - I'm a little confused by some online shops advertising 'The Word Is Live' as a 2CD and 1DVD set - is this something that is completely wrong? I noticed they've amended these details at cdwow and are selling it very cheaply (is this still the boxed edition set - or is there a different version - maybe a standard jewel case one?)

Thank you

Phil.

Thanks for the info, Kevin, much appreciated - I shall go ahead and order at once! Although I enjoy listening to concerts as a 'whole', it will be nice to hear the individual songs from the different era's of Yes. I can't understand why it is so much cheaper from cdwow though - I know they ship from asia, so I hope it's not a bootleg, though I've bought from them in the past.

Also, a big thank you, to Kathy - thank you for making me so welcome and I don't know why I didn't join sooner!! I can't wait to get stuck into some of the posts.

I really hate overdubs on live recordings. I'll take less-than-pristine quality and the occassional bad note, if I know that what I'm listening to is what the band actually played that night.

Discs 1 and 2 are basically on top of each other, overlapping. So you can't get disc 1 without taking out dsic 2. Kind of annoying, but I guess a space saver.

Disc 1 with Bruford is a revelation. I have the Musikladen DVD, but nothing could have prepared me for the versions of "Everydays" and "Yours is No Dsigrace". These early tunes SMOKE. There is just so much energy and talent that these tracks seem to be bursting at the seams.

Disc 2 has so much new (to me) material that it is going to take a while to digest. The 1978 material, played while reading the excellent liner notes, brought back intense flashbacks of those classic MSG shows....

Hugh, if you don't have the 1971 New Haven weed you should get it, it has YIND, Perpetual Change, and otherw with Bruford and it really smokes. It's an open weed that I have in the Trading Room, if any one is now interested.

I had some more disc 1 going before I left for work today. One thought that keeps creeping into my head while I listen is "King Crimson called. They said they want their drummer back."

I got on board for the New Haven 71 weed Albedo was kind enough to offer up a few posts back. Since I got The Word Is Live, I can't get enough of the early in Steve's tenure stuff.

I've hit discs 1 and 3 pretty heavily but I still haven't listened to a lot of disc 2. I'm big on 76 and Tormato tours, so it's not because I don't dig the material.

I had serious smoke coming off my ears the other day before school when I dug on HOTS and Awaken from the beginning of disc 3. Very high intensity.

I am totally enjoying this set of CDs.

Somebody earlier remarked that well we already have a lot of live Siberian Khatrus why another? Well, cuz the Detroit 76 version here is totally BAD ASS! (Can I say that here? LOL) Heavy heavy heavy, these boys weren't foolin' around. And Steve really thrashes at the end. Of course I don't have to point out that the Soundchaser which follows is even more amazing, I think its the highlight of the whole box set.

I picked this up yesterday - I was thinking just to check it out and go cheap, get a copy at half.com or something... but the package is so beautiful, and it was 'on sale' (at Tower for what that's worth!) - so , yoink!
I almost couldn't get beyond the first disc last night, I was completely floored by the brilliance of the sound and inspired performances. I could use about ten more volumes of this!
By the end of disc two I had to stop - pleasure overload! Wonderful to hear the Moraz-era band (esp. 'Sound Chaser'), and a show-stopping 'Fish' from Chris...it's all too much.
A really pleasant surprise; those suffering from Box Set Fatigue, know that this is something completely different.
Great work by the band and god bless Rhino.

Did you ever have a real close friend, and watch them start acting differently, dressing differently, maybe just trying too hard to fit in, or be "liked", and in doing so, you see that they are not being true to themselves - - and maybe you are kind of embarassed for them??

Agreed. And Abilene on Tormato. Jeez i wish they would have consulted us before putting those albums together.

And what would have been the next logical step after the New Wave Yes? Yes in torn flannel shirts mumbling? Yes with their long hair hanging down in front of their faces headbanging?? Yes pumping out generic '80's stadium rock?

Oh wait, did that last one actually happen?

Abilene completely should have been on Tormato..as well as, I believe, Countryside and a more finished version of You Can Be Saved.

And Yes Hugh, the last one actually did happen ;)

And by the way - - that essay by the Gottliebs - - about the 1978 show at the garden -- that was my life. Word for word; right down to the suburban long Island High School, the Yes logos carved into desks, the topographic denim jackets, the sights and smells of NYC, the "pharmaceuticals" (I always wondered why Jon appeared to me like on of those Indian deities with 16 arms, and why the light show continued well into the train ride home....)

That description is SO dead-on accurate it is almost uncanny. Precisely perfect.

This mini-box set is not only expensive but wait till you read this:

THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN PART OF THE OFFICIAL BOOTLEG SERIES, September 9, 2005
Reviewer: E. Rinehart "vegafleet" (puerto rico) -

THERE IS NO EXCUSE IN THIS AGE OF DVDA, HDCD, SACD TO ISSUE SUCH BAD SOUNDING STUFF AND PRESENT IT AS A PREMIUM BOX SET. I THINK STUFF LIKE THIS WAS WHAT THE BAND HAD IN MIND WHEN THEY ANNOUNCED (AND THEN SCRAPPED) THEIR 'OFFICIAL BOOTLEG'SERIES.

THE GRATEFUL DEAD LETS YOU KNOW THAT THEIR DICKS PICKS SERIES MAY NOT BE UP TO THE STANDARDS OF THE REGULAR RHINO RELEASES, SO THAT THE CONSUMER KNOWS WHERE TO SPEND THEIR MONEY. I FEEL CHEATED BY YES. I GOT THIS THE SAME DAY AS THE RHINO CHICAGO LIVE AT CARNEGIE HALL BOX SET ($80 BUCKS FOR RHINO IN ONE DAY!) AND WAS ALSO DISAPPOINTED WITH THE SOUND. THE OLD 3 CD SET SOUNDED PRETTY MUCH THE SAME BUT THEY ACTUALLY BOTCHED THE DRUM SOUND ON THE NEW ONE. RHINO IS DEFINETELY SLIPPING.

and there is more....

A bootleg - in both sound & performance, September 7, 2005
Reviewer: Scott S. (Ninole, HI)

I am a MASSIVE Yes fan. Don't want to ever think I'd ever have even a small part in taking $ out of their pockets, but...this CD is very sub-par in both performance & especially sound quality. They obviously didn't have many master tapes to mix from; if they did please fire the mixing engineer now! It's cool as a collector of Yes recordings but beyond that, it's pretty awful. I so much wish I could say something different but I'd be lying. Very sad.

(both reviews from Amazon)

So come to think about spending $45-$50 bucks on this, well kinda makes you feel like I'm not going to be taken for a fool....I might buy it but for what I consider its worth.

The funny thing is that this would have been probably $60-$70, at least, as a bootleg, and without all the pictures and great packaging. With all the extra stuff bootleggers would be asking $90-$100 for this package.

So, those complaining that they got only boot-quality sound should be thanking Rhino for saving us all 25 bucks!!

I really enjoy this compilation and I think it's the best thing they've put out in a while. The sound quality is pretty atrocious in some places, but it's still listenable. It's a great reminder that for all their studio magic, they've been phenomenal live. The less-than-sterling sound quality doesn't obscure that at all.

And if you want sterling sound quality, put in KEYS TO ASCENSION. That sound quality is tremendous, but its lack of authenticity is glaring. TWIL is what Yes sounded like Live. For those of us who never saw them before 1991, it's a great document.

I just got my copy today (I'm a lazy git), and I have to say that I'm thoroughly pleased. It definitely whets my appetite for more live material featuring the original lineup. This may be heresy, but I prefer by far Peter Banks' workout on "Astral Traveller" than Howe's later version. I really, really wish that the original lineup had recorded at least one more album.

C'mon, guys, we know that there's much more in the unreleased live tank. Let's have it all! We know that there's material from the TFTO tour just waiting to get out. Release it soon and the bunny won't get hurt.

A big fat thumbs up to this post!

We can be a tad over-analytical and critical on this forum, but I guess that's a testament to what Yes brings to the table - and therefore the kinds of fans who show up here. Their music teases the intellect, not just the emotions (or the groin).

That's correct, and we are mostly ;) one smart lot with high expectations from a band who I'm sure prides itself on (among other things) exceeding expectations.
I like TWIL very much, but the sound does suffer in parts, for sure. I attribute this at least in part, to the very nature of live recording. I somehow don't think this observation makes me any less of a fan.

ROTFLMAO!!!!! You NAILED 'em! :-) I laughed so hard my face hurts. Whew!

Um... Does anybody know where to find the Roger Dean art for this on-line somewhere?

It's an awesome package but that "CD and a half" thing in the front isn't quite working for me, and given the size of the package I'd be better off to just put the discs in several standard sized cases so I can shelf them normally. I thought of scanning the cover but I think this would also benefit from my usual upgrade in font size for the tragically nearsighted while I'm at it. I really don't want to try airbrushing the text out, I suck at it and the back cover is just gorgeous.

I bought TWiL in Amsterdam last weekend. I listened to the first disc and I like it very much. Great to hear Steve playing Astral Traveller and Everydays. He is far better than Peter Banks. Tony Kaye was more important for the live sound during this period than I thought he was. Nice to hear Brufords live interpretations of songs like All good people and Yours in No Disgrace. Great packaging! The sound is good, better than Yessongs.
Now it is time to listen to disc two.

I don't work for them in case you're wondering, but it seemed nice to me to point out to this online shop whoever is still searching for a good place to buy the box-set.
Musically speaking, it is a fantastic collection in my opinion, and even if i already owned more or less everything on unofficial recordings, i must say the quality here is far superior, and everything is really enjoyable listening to, even the tracks many say are of "appalling sound quality". For instance, to me the MSG 80 tracks are very listenable.

I was thinking how good this was gonna be, especially as I pre-ordered it from Amazon.co.uk when they first listed it, at £9.95 [and they only charged me that price], but have to say after a couple of listens this morning the sound quality is consistently abysmal. I would imagine most Yes fans have better sounding versions of most of these tracks on bootlegs. I for one, don't understand why the band havent simply "liberated" and cleaned-up some of bootlegs available. King Crimson managed it with their Collectors Club series, why can't Yes? Ah well, maybe next time.

I really don't understand what people are complaining about. The sound quality sounds great to me; it's slightly below par on the Drama tracks, but even they're not bad. I haven't heard any better bootlegs: the disc one material in particular is way better than the boots I've heard.

The quality of TWIL sounds great to me too. However some of the King Crimson Collectors Club releases have had awful sound quality. I wouldn't necessarily look there for a better example to compare TWIL.

I agree...remember when the only possible outlet for live stuff was the bootleggers? I'd rather give my money straight to the band for that (or at least closer to it, via Rhino).

The Crimson Collector's Club I don't believe is a fair comparison---a few of the KCCC releases I've heard *were* in fact audience recordings, and not necessarily great ones at that. These are either board tapes or FM broadcast (please correct me if wrong!)...

And for the record, what I did have of these in my "boot" collection don't sound as good as they do here, and that's including the Drama stuff!

I agree Henry, I don't really have any complaints about it at all. The Drama stuff isn't all that great but we all knew the quality of the recordings there. I'm not sure where these golden ears are coming from, as I feel I'm pretty darned picky myself, and am more than happy with what I'm hearing on it. I guess some will never be happy, unless it's been so over-dubbed and compressed in the studio it sounds like, well it's studio. Personally I like live music, and don't expect it to sound perfect, if I want a studio disc, I'll spin 1.

Yeah I also don't know what everyone's complaining about. Most everything sounds great, especially the Crystal Palace stuff. It is obvious that most of these tapes are just two track soundboards that couldn't be mixed anyway. But the sound is always very listenable and even quite exciting at times. I much prefer the mix of the Detroit '76 show on TWIL to the sterile, puny sounding mix of the same show on Yesshows.

But ultimately its the performances that count. And I'm astonished at how energetic fresh and exciting the band sounds throughout this set. Gonzo playing, really, that proves what hard and heavy lads Yes could be back in the day.

WE ARE LUCKY TO HAVE THIS!

WOW! So far I'm impressed!!!!! I thought the sound was good. Especially when you take into consideration that it was 1970-1971, and well before the "digital recording era" that we're so used to now.

Besides, I kind of like hearing my guys unmixed, warts & all. Makes them more human (although I'm still not sure about Jon.....)

I have got a decent stereo, but I decided to try the box set on headphones last night - a distinct improvement, I found. [Plus, my partner couldn't ask me to turn it down...] I still think some of the live boots/CDRs sound better, and yes I do like live recordings as live recordings and not studio-dubbed and produced, but i am enjoying Moraz's keyboards on Siberian Khatru and Sound Chaser immensely. And the rocking Roundabout.

Incidentally, does any one else think it's weird, designwise, that Rick's photo is on the page for CD1 - which he doesn't appear on! ?

Heh heh, no weirder than Steve appearing on the US cover of Time and A Word, an album he doesn't play on. (Yes, I know the story behind it, but it's still funny.)

They probably had a number of pictures they wanted to scatter around, and didn't think about who went where. But yeah, someone should've caught it.
