View Full Version : Best Yes Rocker

Q

Which Yes song rocks the hardest?

Definition here is really fuzzy, so my apologies if I left off a song that should have been included. Correct the error by posting your choice below!

Q
04-17-2002, 12:01 PM
In making my list, I completely neglected "Roundabout." Upon reflection, the reason was obvious: "Roundabout" is so perfect a song that to call it a "rocker" somehow seems a diminishment.

Apologies for this oversight!

I couldn't vote for any of these without Roundabout being up there. You know we are so gosh darned sick of this song. But put it on the player and crank up those dusty speakers to a level you haven't heard in a long time.WOW this song really rocks!!!I like Spirit of Survival also.It should be on the encore list going right into...ROUNDABOUT! JOE

Q
04-17-2002, 12:19 PM
Right you are, mrgone3!

"Roundabout" is a perfect song on so many levels - rocker, love letter, full-blown progressive work, radio tune - it should top this list!

Perhaps some moderator would be good enough to correct my error ...

I was going to start a poll. Those who banish Quantum to the Britney Sperm web site.I'm kidding!I know you made a mistake on this one.I wonder if mister administrator can fix this?I'm sure Roundabout will win. After all it is the signal of the end of a YES show after all these 30 years.Beating out OOALH! I like Changes though. JOE

Q

I think you're probably right ... who among us doesn't rock out to "Roundabout?"

Neverthirst
04-17-2002, 09:47 PM
LIGHTENING STRIKES smokes most of these as rockers.

DANGEROUS
I"M RUNNING

SILENT SPRING leaves almost of these others gasping for breath ... but its only a two minute segment of ENDLESS DREAM and probably wouldn't qualify.

I'M RUNNING may seem a stretch ... its the last half of the song i'm thinking of ... what a powerful finish!

I chose CHANGES. but I'll change my mind tomorrow and the next day, and the next day, and the next ...

The Calling is my pick, without Roundabout up there.

Good Yes Rockers:

GOING FOR THE ONE is the most potent of the "rockers".
I'VE SEEN ALL GOOD PEOPLE is a great example of YES rocking-rolling; once you get past Your Move
RELEASE RELEASE is way up on the rockin' Yes scale as well
DOES IT REALLY HAPPEN keeps a good heavy beat throughout
SPIRIT OF SURVIVAL qualifies as well
THE CALLING , I agree. It's a decent rocker
PARALLELS This rocks
SWEET DREAMS Borderline perhaps

Somehow I can't consider songs like ROUNDABOUT to be rockers. True, ROUNDABOUT has some really rocking parts, but there's a lot of room to breathe in some of the mellow parts. It's more of a mini epic. My idea of a rocker may be wrong, but I feel a rocker should have a consistant beat that keeps going for the most part.

I voted for GFTO from this list, but I'd really have to give the nod to Siberian Khatru or State of Play (or is the latter considered hip-hop metal/funk?).

Who said Roundabout isn't there?

Oh yea, that's right, I added it.;) But I didn't vote for it. I went for All Goood People. I used to be sick of that song but changed my mind after hearing it on the Union tour, ever since it got a 5 minute plus standing ovation in Philly, its one I always find myself cranking the volume on.

today its ISAGP ... definately ISAGP. No doubt ...

I would not have expected that at all ...

So far as Yes rockers are concerned it must be GFTO but why no Release Release??? Surely this must rate a close second.

tough one but I definantly have to go with generator. Though why no starship trooper especially the 9012live version Trevor really blasts out those three chords on wurm and Tony kaye plays it beutifully he really fits well with the band wish he was still in the band (wow tony and rick on tour that would be cool.) Alan was terific and Chris and Jonsounded great together

I thought I had posted here but I was mistaken. Anyhoo, my vote goes to Rhythm of Love. The beat drives along nicely and the guitar solo really fits in well with the lyrics. I have always found this to be a very erotic and very rocking song.

This is a hard one.
I always thought Parrallels was pretty "Rockin'"
Although after having purchased the Symph' DVD today I think that although there are many quiet moments, Gates really kicked butt. It had been over ten years since I'd heard it and I was completely stunned.
Roundabout is a good song but I never even considered that it was a rocker. I have never seen them live mind you so I've not experienced it in a large hall with all that goes with that.
I also liked all the material on Drama and still think that the whole album rocks.
A live version of Tempus fugit with Jon on vocals would be interesting.

I like the version on the Keys... DVD too.

I agree with Earl. I picked "Owner" also. It's by no means my favorite, but without "Siberian Khatru" up there, I thought it had to beat out "Roundabout" and "Going for the One" by a nose in this category.

just listened to the madison show again, and without a doubt, it HAS to be south side of the sky! i just loved that my cousin pointed out to me during the song 'look at all the heads bobbing!' and sure enough, it seemd everyone within MY eyesight was really rockin!! i was so surprised, till i realized MY head was bobbing, too!! he mentoned it to his 17 year old daughter, and she said, "yeah, dad! they DO that at concerts!' [she had been to incubus the week before] yep-not my fav, but definately THE rockin song of the tour-all three times that I was there, anyway!

Q

Wow, this was definetly not easy, but my vote went to "the Calling", there are other songs on the list I like better, but if we're talking about rock, then it has to be that one. By the way , why isn't "City of Light" on the list, allthough definetly not the best song Yes ever made, it is a real rocker!

I voted for "Release, Release" (glad it was added to the poll). LOVE IT!

"Rhythm of Love" is great live, but it doesn't have the depth of RR. Plus, it's TREVOR! LOL.

Too many to pick. I picked The Calling. I don't know why. I should have picked Owner Of A Lonely Heart. It's too hard. Maybe Rhythm Of Love. Ack!!!!

I do know that when David Letterman heard The Calling on the radio, he pulled his car to the side of the road and called the booking agent for his show and said he wanted Yes to be on his show. That song must have really had some effect on old Dave. :D

I was tempted to pick Roundabout, but it's too much of an epic and has slow parts, so Tempus Fugit. It rocks non-stop. My son would agree too. He puts it on with the repeat button. Heard it at least 20 times in a row today.

I can't pretend like I'm not suprised that Going For The One is leading in the polls right now... I've always thought it was a cool song, but like the album it derives its name from, wasn't considered among Yes' finest efforts. Guess that proves I have a lot to understand about the inner workings of a Yesfan's mind.

Either way, I went with Roundabout. A lot of excellent songs on there, but in the end this one wins out for me. Release, Release was a close second though.

Wait, you used a double negative. Does that mean that you CAN pretend like you ARE surprised? Does it really happen?

As for me, I'm not pretending, I'm surprised "Going for the One" has done as well as it has in the poll. When Yes used it as a show opener on the last tour, not that many Yesfans seemed that enthused with it as a show opener.

Actually, my vote goes to the ABWH tour version of "Your Move/ISAGP." Once they got rolling on it, I loved the guitar/keyboard jamming.

Who can deny those first guitar crunching chords on OOALH??? Tom Cruise should have been rocking out to YES, not Bob Segar in Risky Business in '83. It screams we're back, we're a different, and we're still a force to be reckoned with. Parallels - best song on GFTO, Roundabout - undeniable, all of Drama jams - but I have to give the nod to the song that propelled YES through the '80's.

Actually, I wouldn't mind if, on the next tour (if there ever IS a next tour), Yes would play the Bond theme instead of "Firebird Suite." Don't get me wrong, I love the FS, but Yes are British, and Alan White drove a Bondlike hovercraft at one time (I've interviewed the man twice, but both times forgot to ask him if he still has it!), so I think their entitled.

Now then, pass me that bottle Santa....cheers fans.

Maybe, if you were nice this year (or naughty in the right way), Santa will bring you your own bottle ... if the Liquor Locusts haven't gotten to it first.

I haven't voted yet. Oddly, thier 3 most incredible hard rocking songs are not here: Sound Chaser, Heart of the Sunrise and South Side of the Sky. If they're not added, then I guess consider me a vote for New State of Mind from this lot.

I wouldn't vote for "Sound Chaser," but unquestionably "Heart of the Sunrise" should be a choice, and so should "South Side of the Sky," which I drove all the way from Mpls. to Kansas to hear back in 2002. Well, Rick being back and Yes not doing a show in Mpls. on the summer tour were reasons, too, but "South Side" was the clincher for me.

Well, I'm glad to see I'm not the ONLY person who voted for "New State of Mind."

...but again, this is one of those unfair apples-and-oranges polls. We should have been allowed to pick at least 3.

...in which case I would have added Parallels and Rhythm Of Love.

I thought I had posted here but I was mistaken. Anyhoo, my vote goes to Rhythm of Love. The beat drives along nicely and the guitar solo really fits in well with the lyrics. I have always found this to be a very erotic and very rocking song.

AND it had a good beat!
AND it was easy to dance to!
I give it a 98!

Looking Around?
Astral Traveller?
Sweet Dreams?
Yours is no Disgrace?
South Side of the Sky?
Soundchaser?
From the list I would have to side with Parallels, although Roundabout does get your toe tapping.

From this list, it's Release Release. However, just today, Machine Messiah popped on my ipod, and, just maybe, it could or should be that one.

They didn't write it, but I'm going with No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience Needed.

Roundabout - no doubt :)

Hearing Fragile recently, I had forgotten how hard some of the tracks rock... Roundabout, SSOTS, Long Distance Runaround, The Fish, HOTSR! These songs are pretty raw, with great gainy tones on the bass, guitar, and drums...

They sound so slick these days... Love to hear something new with some edge, yet nicely recorded... something slamming....

Oh, best rocker(s) , I'd say for today:

SSOTS
Machine Messiah
Real Love

Have you ever noticed how similar the bassline for TF and the middle section of Everydays is? And what's with the nun in that video?
