View Full Version : What popular YES songs do you NOT like?

Here is a list of the most popular song from each album. This was mainly based on the following in order of importance:

1) frequency of concert appearance
2) frequency of radio play
3) favorite song polls from the albums - I found it necessary to use this criteria on the first album, ABWH, Union, Talk, KTA-1, and The Ladder as there was no clear cut choice.
Also, TAAW got two songs as the title track and Sweet Dreams really seemed to be a toss-up. Union got two songs on the list to represent the 2 different YES's on that album.

So - to the best of my ability I came up with this list of the most popular YES song from each album. Which ones do you not like?

Feel free to mention others in the discussion. Have fun.

-Mark

Rhythm Of Love I always found to be too commercial, too pandering...just TOO...(and therefore also not enough!)...

That is,until last year's tour, during which they really rocked this song!Saw it in a completely new light,I did.And Yes has done this to me many times before, with many different songs---demonstrated the qualities inherent in the music, leaving no doubt,in a live setting.

I love when they do that(it's kind of like they're teaching, and we are----still----the students)! It leaves the impression that this band could play just about anything and make it sound great.Certainly virtually anything from their own repertoire...

I'm sorry to all you Trevor fans.........but "Owner of a"! I know it's a favorite, but it's just to........Trevor! I'm an old way back hard core YES freak, and the Trevor years were long. (I'm sorry Cindy! Don't be mad at me.) Trevor was and still is a killer guitar player and song writer, but for me , the real YES is with Steve.............

Well for me main one is America - I can't stand that song....and I console myself it is not a Yes original.....but I don't like the treatement that Yes give it...Steve's playing on that song really grates with me...it's like an improvised Jam.
One not on the list is 'Going For The One'..I really not keen on that at all..I'm not to inspired by the lyrics either.
Generally I'm not keen on Don't Kill The Whale but I have to admit they have done a good job when playing it live..the band have given more life to it.

I'm surprised "Leave It" is not on the list. It was overplayed, I also believe it was overperformed (jn terms of number of times played and overdone musically in concert), and I don't think it fit either the original Yes, or Yes-West mold. It was a nice little a cappella piece but, in my humble opinion, probably the most "non Yes" of Yes songs.

I do NOT like Yes' most popular song ever, not one fraction of a second of it.
Another example of popularity's tendency to be meaningless.

So far, there's only one Yes song that I can't stand. It's "Don't Go". Vapid. The harmonies are like fingernails on..... Whenever I pop in the Symphoinc Live dvd, that song plays while the songlist is displayed. I guess it's a good thing that after 30+ years there's only one Yes song that I abhor. :D

I strongly dislike the original Time and a Word but I love the version on Yesshows with Steve and Rick; such and amazing improvement in overall quality. Keyboard and guitar parts to match Squires great parts.

"Owner..." is the most popular song from 90125 as it has the most concert appearances. Also more radio play than any other 90125 song.

"Leave It" was left alone after the 90125 era for the most part. No concert appearance and radio play dropped significantly.

Anyway, that is why "Leave It" was not included on the list.

I feel the same. TAAW is a great song, but the original performance is not very good. I love the 'YesShows' version. I also do not like the 'Keys To Ascension' version.

Yeah, ditto on disliking the Keys' version. Quite honestly, Steve's mandolin solo on that version sounds amateurish after his inspired playing on the Yesshows recording. I also dislike the new arrangement they gave it.

But yeah thanks Joe for not bashing Trevor. It's okay not to like him. Just respect him for the great musician that he is. :D

Ooh I'll bet that would sound good. I think I'd like it better.

The singing on it, is what drove me up the wall!

My apologies to Jon and Trevor because they're both excellent singers but they sounded like 2 cats on a fence wailing on that one. Ugh!

There is not a song of Yes that I don't wanna hear, but I have a problem with the second track of Open Your Eyes, I don't have the CD here cause my sister must be hearing it with the folks, so I can't remember the name, but wait, I have the lirics in a internet page that I built. Yes, the song Its "Open your Eyes", the first song it's okay, its New State of Mind, a prologue into the State we learn into the Asimov literature, I think. But Open Your Eyes it's a painfull return to a sad reality. In fact, that is the harder days of the present. I'm thinking if so many people have to passing by to this reality described in that song, to achievement or to sucess, I really don't know. But the fact is that Open your Eyes turned my head to the stronger side of life.
In a simplification, I think about this CD like the passage to the backdoor stage of "Floyd" in the movie The Wall, soon after he had destroyed his apartment.

Here's the thing with Owner. I didn't vote for it, because it is an okay song. But its hit-status has never been justified IMO. Plus Chris and especially Alan are very weak on it...

Now I know you just have to be joking here: doing the dirty on two of my favourite Yes songs? As for me, I went for Open Your Eyes, but it could have been anything from that album, or Union: two albums that represent the real low points of Yes' career. That, That Is, isn't a favourite either, as it is the sound of a band desperately trying to write an epic to cement their return...it just didn't work. Mind Drive was a lot better, but it borrows a lot from Tarkus in regards to its construction

Bloody hell Scoot!!

That song gave me some of the best moments of my entire Yes gig history!

OK maybe a smattering of all things Spinal Tap but what joy, what joy to have the Jon boy in and around us all, out there amongst us...a bit like the ABWH tour....'In the morning when you rise do you open your eyes see what I see-ee'

Actually I love the song...as I have said in another post I am one sad animal...jeez, I simply can't be in any way, shape or form objective about 'my' maestros ..I just love the whole kit and kaboodle.

When the initial strains of this track come on I just about wet my bleeding pants!!!

It is not Yes in a way but then again it is!!! The vocals, the bass...the tub thumper. Oh, I digress (surprise, surprise) but I think some of Al's best work is contained within the Rabin era. Hey folks just bloody well listen again to Talk...Al is flaming awesome..Oh. just remembered....Tales...Relayer...Drama...mmmmmm...p ondering, reflecting...perhaps his drumming on Rabinesque material is ever such a slight notch down from that...NO...it isn't!!...it is the material that is a notch down from that...our man Alan is there, right there, as always.
For God's sake Al...give us some bloody White dates. I am chomping at the bit here marra.

I would say Shock to the System but I think the chorus has some redeeming qualities ("So, in answer to the prayer...").

The only one I can think of is Roundabout. I say that not because I dislike the song, on the contrary; however, it has been played nearly to death in concert as the many, many, many performances I have will attest to. I can truthfully say I don't know if I ever want to hear it performed live again. The original studio release will always be a crisp breath of fresh air to me though and always conjure up visions of my madcap youth. Hoo Boy!

I'm not a huge fan of And You And I. It's always a bit of a flat point for me at a show and I rarely listen to it on CD. But, I know it's a great song - it's just one of those that doesn't hit the mark with me.

With you on this one....... hit the skip button!

I like all these songs live. Endless Dream studio version leaves me cold but it became very good live, I hardly ever listen to the studio versions of Owner and Roundabout, it's mostly cause of over-exposure. I don't dislike the songs at all but there are many Yes songs I'd much rather hear off the studio albums at this point.

I like every version of Time and a Word, myself.

Okay I am playing fast and loose with the term 'popular' but with Yes fans there's always someone who will say "that's my favourite track" no matter how pants it is. ;)

Endless Dream
Don't Go
Soft As A Dove
Time Is Time
Big Generator
Almost Like Love
Holy Lamb
Finally
From The Balcony
Somehow, Someday
Be The One
Bring Me To The Power.

I am sorry, but I really don't like listening to any of these. Hit the skip button please.

I don't understand the question...
Well, the question is linked to a poll.

Also, lest anyone not read the opening post of the thread, the following explanation was given when I started it in regard to the choices of songs on this list. (And I still stand by the list as being about as accurate as one could get, +/- 3% margin of error):

"Here is a list of the most popular song from each album.

Union got two songs on the list to represent the 2 different YES's on that album."

Don't Kill the Whale. Wonderous Stories as well, though it's not on the list. Bleargh. Bad pop songs the both of them. I haven't heard 'Magnification' or 'Talk'. The only other one I can think of is Holy Lamb, which is a crock as well, but contrary to popular opinion, I like the rest of 'Big Generator' a lot.

I voted for ISAGP, it's not that I don't like it but I always skip it when it comes up on my iPod. I figure there are songs I like a lot more that I could be listening to instead.

I let my feelings be known about Owner on another thread, trying to keep it fresh.

Tough call between Owner,Rhythm,Shock and The More We Live. All as bad as each other.
In the end I went with Rhythm of Love, but could easily have chosen all four.

LOL!

I love all their stuff, classics included... But at this point I think it will be mostly diehard fans and people they bring... So play some adventurous songs, skip the the greatest hits!... If I want to hear Roundabout, All Good People, OOALH, etc, I can go down to the local bar and hear it on the jukebox or in my car on classic rock radio...

Or howe about just 1 classic and some less played gems?

Glancing at the list, there are none that I flat don't like. There are a few Yes songs I feel that way about, but they're not on the list! Out of those on the list, I think I have to say I enjoy "Mind Drive" least.

I've seen all good people. I'm so tired of it now. As one song on the YES album, it's alright at best, but to think that there is virtually no YES show this song hasn't been performed.....especially with the Give peace a Chance quote. Yawn.

I am not crazy about Survival...even though it may be the most prog song on the 1st album.....It's got the different sections; tempos, etc., and is probably very important in laying the groundwork fro what came later...but it had just never done much for me....can't say why exactly....It's kind of intangible ultimateley what it is that makes me like a song or not....

weird....says I voted for Rhythm of Love....but I don't recall that. If I was going to vote at all it would have been for Mind Drive.

I don't *not* like any of these tunes...but like Kevin said, that's the one I like the least.

Let me put on my armor before I say this.....

I feel the almost same way about And You And I. I like the song, but I would gladly sacrifice hearing it live, yet again, in favor of something I have never heard live or haven't heard in ages.

I think that quote is pretty timely myself.

I'd have voted Rythm of Love, but I think I'm going to pass. I really don't not like it, but there's just so much excellent stuff for it to stand in the shadow of. It stands up great to a lot of other people's material, but I don't think it stands up to the rest of the Yes catalog all that well. IMHO of course.

The only one on THAT ^ list I can live without is OWNER. I can't understand why it was picked as a single or why it was a hit. Even if it was a Trevor solo tune, it just sounds cheesy to me.
The only other song I really detest is "DON'T GO"

It never used to be my absolute fave, either. But I don't have time to really make a decision with all of that guitar switching, going on!

Definitely a "no-curry" song, at least, guitars-wise!

Being in an ACDC tribute band is much cheaper.
For sure!

Open Your Eyes is the clear choice. Contrived, cliche, and dreadful harmonies.

How can anyone pick Owner? If nothing else, it's a masterwork of clever production. If it had been #1, I bet people wouldn't pick it.

Just a quick follow up: They did a clean, Fragile version of Roundabout at the ITP show the other night, and I absolutely loved it. It sounded fresh, and exciting, and was performed very reverently. It's placement in the set was cool too. It wasn't the encore. That was Starship. Also done in a fresh, fun and exciting way. I didn't mind the 'standards', I guess is what I'm trying to say. I recant all previous posts on this thread. They all sound great to me now. I'm falling in love with Yes all over again.

[Sardaukar;494819']I strongly dislike the original Time and a Word but I love the version on Yesshows with Steve and Rick; such and amazing improvement in overall quality. Keyboard and guitar parts to match Squires great parts.
Both versions are brilliant....but my favourite is the Yesshows one for sure!!!!!:headset:

I'm just sooooooo burnt out with seen all good people from to much radio play. It's pathetic howe the radio stations only play one or two yessongs and it seems that this song is always one of them. Good lord radio sucks so bad around here. Moron radio at it's best.

I remember when WNEW out of new york would play close to the edge and tunes from drama.
