To Vic and others trying to pull the lyrics together, we now have the "official word" from the author. Here are the lyrics:

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Cathedral Of Love

I was lost, I was lonely
Walking down a street without an end
I had lost my direction
Could not find a friend
Going down I was falling
On my knees in the pouring rain
A young girl came and gave me shelter
And I didn’t even know her name
I looked in her eyes and they were smiling
Just like an angel from above
And in that moment I realized
I was standing in the cathedral of love
I was standing in the cathedral of love

She gave to me without taking
Asked for nothing in return
Where you find human compassion
The flame of love will burn
I looked in her eyes and they were smiling
Just like an angel from above
And in that moment I realized
I was standing in the cathedral of love
I was standing in the cathedral of love
I was standing in the cathedral of love

Spring and summer, love together
It's only cold when you're not here
Meant to tell you, simple tethers
Only bind us to our fears
As we reach further we will uncover
Passages of light and dark
Forever twisting, not resisting
Help us find that subtle spark
Even now we've shared adventures
We look with joy upon simple things
Hold me closer, leave me warmer
Setting scenes for all love brings

Everybody needs a little help sometimes
Everybody's searching for a little piece of human kindness
Go out and seek and you may find
Hold out your hand, and give a little bit of understanding
Hold out your light, and let it shine

Spring and summer, love together
Spring and summer, love together

Well that girl taught me a lesson
I'll take with me to my journey's end
In my darkest hour
A stranger had become my closest friend
Looked in her eyes and they were smiling
Just like an angel from above
And in that moment I realized
I was standing in the cathedral of love
Spring and summer, love together
I was standing in the cathedral of love
Spring and summer, love together
I was standing in the cathedral
Standing in the cathedral
Standing in the cathedral
Standing in the cathedral
Standing in the cathedral
Standing in the cathedral
Of love

No, "close enough" won't cut it. "Close enough", when balancing my checkbook, can be a recipe for disaster! (biggest of grins) I think it's just a matter of respect to strive for accuracy when we post material that represents someone else's work. But we're there now. (smiles) Onward!

What in the world are you talking about, Vic? (grins)

No one has accused you of anything. There was nothing wrong with you making an attempt at assembling the lyrics from the low-res mp3 you recorded off of the radio. You and I *BOTH* made attempts with those lyrics and didn't get everything right.

So I asked Nardelli to correct what we had, he did, and now we have the "real thing." So don't sweat it.

All I was saying is, accuracy is important. "Close enough" is not acceptable. If we're going to say, "these are the lyrics," then they should be correct so we don't unintentionally misrepresent the author.

All is well. (smiles) Relax! Everything is fine.

Great lyrics to a great song. They tell a story that holds you throughout. Earl is right, Nardelli is a poet.

This is one of those special songs that come along once in a while that capture a universal feeling and connects with people. I think Nardelli delivers it beautifully as only the writer can, you know he means what he's singing. Magical!

Along with the verse the proceeds it..

"Everybody needs a little help sometimes
Everybody's searching for a little piece of human kindness
Go out and seek and you may find"

Michele, when is the next radio playing or release schedule for this song?
The 5-minute, radio-friendly version will have its premiere at the next Chris/Steve interview:

Sunday, May 8, at 4:00 p.m. Central Time
Technicolor Web of Sound Radio Network
Paul Moews, host
http://www.techwebsound.com/

(Always check the latest YesServices Newsletter for the current interview schedule. You can request to receive it by email if you wish.)

The 9-minute, CD-version of the song will be released on the album, hopefully shortly before the tour begins in July. I do not know if The Syn will authorize another radio performance of that version before the album comes out. I rather doubt it. But we'll see.

The lyrics are brilliant, they tell a story of hope in a very simple, sincere way. This is poetry at it's best. Now I can't wait to hear the music.

The simplicity of the lyrics make them all the more poignant. Steve Nardelli is a masterful writer, there is a touch of genius in the way he writes. I really feel they are that good! The talent to touch people with words. Amazing track!

'Genius' may be a bit strong, but I know what you mean. The lyrics fit the track perfectly, the whole song works on all levels, it's a modern masterpiece of music and lyrics.

Such a sublime thing...

The song is probably the truest thing I've heard this year.

I love the 'tethers' line...

"Spring and Summer, love together
It's only cold when you're not here
Meant to tell you, simple tethers
Only bind us to our fears..."

What a beautifully written song.

And it doesn't sound like anything else. Nardelli is an original.

Yeah ! Yeah ! And yeah EG...

My fav bit will continue to be...

"Everybody needs a little help sometimes..
Everbody's searching for a little piece of human kindness
Go out and seek and you may find..
Hold Out your hand. And give a little bit of understanding.
Hold out your light, and let it shine...."

Wow...just...Wow!

my fav part

I looked in her eyes and they were smiling
Just like an angel from above
And in that moment I realized
I was standing in the cathedral of love

reminds me of jon when he sings

The moment I saw the look in her eyes
I knew I was captured by an angel in desguise

True Dat...
Nor should it..

Also..some of the lyrics are very Squiresque..

(barring the hold Out Your Hand reference)..

"Forever twisting, not resisting.."

Totally reminds me of the way Chris writes.

"As we reach further, we will uncover, passages of light and dark.."

is another that comes to mind.

i guess it's chris' fans vs jon's fans here :)

but bare in mind steve is a major yes fan :)

the first part sounds like clapton or dire straits
then there is a take the water to the mountain ripp off :)
then the reast

over all it's great, but this is how it sounds like to me

Take the Water to the Mountain ripp off???? :lmao:

Where???
I'd love to know at what point this song sounds remotely even close to TTWTTM???

And Steve isnt the only major Yesfan, we all are
It's not a Jon Vs. Chris thing...
Chris is just more active than Jon right now.

Spring and summer, love together
__Take the water to the mountain;
It's only cold when you're not here
__Let's become alive again.

Meant to tell you, simple tethers
__Let it cascade off your shoulders;
Only bind us to our fears
__Let the water to the land.

surely this seems familiar :)
maybe it's just me but this is what i heard :)
this is not to say Col is less amazing :lmao:

The tune does go along nicely, although if you sing the verse to "Hearts", that kind of works too... Compare "Set your hearts along the river" with "Spring and summer, love together"...

I always thought Chris was one of Jon's chief antagonizers in the band about his lyrics (among other things no doubt). I'd be surprised if he's been overly influenced by them, although the positive messages in both guys' lyrics are their most notable feature, I think

That section was written by Gerard Johnson and Hamish Brewer in 1982, and copied wholesale into Cathedral of Love during the arrangement phase to provide a contrasting section to Steve's "I was lost, I was lonely..." song. It's not surprising it sounds a bit 'Yessey': they were huge fans. But it's definitely not influenced by anything post-1982.

Just thought I'd mention it, to avoid future confusion ;-)

Gerard Johnson is The Syn keyboardist. Hamish Brewer was, is, one of Gerard's close friends.

Well, who did write the lyrics?
Thought that was clear from the posts. Nardelli wrote lyrics for opening and closing section, Gerard Johnson wrote lyrics to middle section. I asked Nardelli how this would be credited for publishing purposes, he said all would share. It's just like Yes... they list everyone who participated in the arrangement as co-writers. Clear now?

Yes, finally.

I read this entire thread. The quotes from the thread as to authorship are:

"..we now have the "official word" from the author..
..So I asked Nardelli to correct what we had, he did..
..I think Nardelli delivers it beautifully as only the writer can..
..Steve Nardelli is a masterful writer..
..Nardelli is an original..
..The lyrics were written by Steve not Chris. I am sure Chris said Steve wrote the whole song..
..Gerard Johnson is The Syn keyboardist. Hamish Brewer was, is, one of Gerard's close friends.."

No, it wasn't clear from the posts (quoted above) at all. Not once, until a later post, was it mentioned or corrected that Gerard and Hamish also co-wrote the lyrics, so that is why I asked the question.

The contrary seems to be the case. No one has countered that Johnson and Brewer are not co-authors, so I take this meaning co-authorship. Credit where credit's due, that's all. It's not a bad thing that there is more than one author. It just is.

Clear now?

From what Chris says, Nardelli is the main writer, both lyrics and music and the other guys put their bit into the arrangement and development of the band. This is how great bands work.

HHHmmm, well it's all clear to me now at least. :lmao:

We'll know, when we know..... I still love the song, it really means nothing to me who wrote what at this point. I'm sure it'll be far more clear when the album comes out. Life is strange indeed......
