For some reason I thought it was the San Diego Symphony but I have not been able to verify it. Perhaps it was just a group of players assembled by Larry Groupe. Does anyone know?

I think it was a group of musicians that Larry uses when doing his other compositions.
I wonder if there is anything in his interview on NFTE that clarifies this.

I skimmed the interview quickly yesterday and I didn't see anything. But I admit, I didn't read it in detail yesterday.

Bataisflow, thanks for the post. Do you have a source of information for this. This is what I thought originally, but they are not credited on the album, it is not credited in the NFTE interview, and Mr. Groupe sometimes conducts the San Diego Symphony but I do not believe he is the main conductor. Any thoughts?

I just visited the San Diego Symphony website and its principal conductor is Jung Ho Pak. I found no mention on the website of the orchestra's work on Magnification.

Yeah I don't think he is the main conducter - I think he uses them for projects and like you said "Guest Conducts". I remembed reading a review when they played San Diego last summer where it stated that the san Diego Symphony had recorded with Yes for the Magnification album because Groupe was comfortable working with them etc...

Hello,
I was on that recording with Larry Groupe conducting. Nick Grant was the concertmaster/contractor for the session. The group was made up of Larry's usual core group plus several others brought in from San Diego and Los Angeles. No rehearsal of course, just a quick in-n-out reading in one day. It was a nice band! Sigh, we never get mentioned...

Were you annoyed about not getting a mention?

Not really, It's been that way for over 30 years. We are just the invisible forces behind the name artists. On the plus side, I don't need to hire a bodyguard to protect me from the screaming fans!

I love the Magnification orchestrations. What instrument do you play?

I played violin on that one. We recorded our part without hearing the band tracks, and it sounded like it was some very cool 20th century classical music.

I'd love to hear an album of JUST the orchestral tracks. I don't suppose such a thing is available?
Sometimes music that seems so familiar has real hidden depths, and musical parts can sound totally different and interesting when heard individually. My dad has a DVD of the making of Jeff Buckley's 'Grace' and when yoy see them recording the strings to 'Eternal Life' it sounds so incredible! They're great in the song too, but you don't realise just how powerful they are until heard as a stand-alone! I imagine it could be the same with 'Magnification'...
