Hi all,

I'm wondering what does the group think about improving the sound quality of boots?

The reason I ask is I find myself re-recording allot of the older Mono sounding condenser mike boots and using some "tricks" making them into stereo recordings with better head room and fidelity.

Is this something that traders want or is the virgin recording with all the hiss, pops, generation loss etc more valuable?

Also I have this button on my ONKYO receiver called Simulated Stereo that really makes some of the mono recordings sound up front and separated.
Has anyone heard of outboard gear that does this?

Please let me know what you think.

Maybe this would be a good topic for discussion, Restoring and enhancing older recordings.

My next project is the 12/6/73 "Ancient Tales" Recording.

Thanks for your input.

Geez, I've got a lot of catching up to do!

Got a new computer for Christmas w/CDRW, which has opened up a whole new world to this 30yr fan: I've burned a Paris Unplugged CD which turned out pretty good, but the Gothenburg/Berlin cuts and Wolverhampton (just after Rick joined) cuts have pretty poor sound quality. I had no idea they could be improved. Just the same, it's great to hear an unpolished Jon introducing numbers, and "unusual" improvisations vis-a-vis a 20-minute "I See You" or a jam with Iron Butterfly.

Most recently I've been gathering cuts from Rick's Live 2000 DVD with accompanying stories and intros - does anyone know if an NTSC format version is available or planned for US release?

Well-about 20 years ago I purchased a 2-lp boot titled: Stellar Attraction.
This is the Relayer Tour and is the only live version on record I have ever heard of Sound Chaser.
Anyway, the quality lacks bass, and stereo separation-so I made a tape of it with just some added EQ-and made a world of difference.

So, I think if it improves in any small manner-then sure, why not?

man rand i thought i was the only guy who owned that album - which has I believe a mime in green on the cover - I actually thought the sound was quite good for a vinyl recording...

If I may add my two cents to this issue: I believe you should only do "improvments" to shows only if you know exactly what it is you need to improve and of course you have the proper EQ equipment to do it. An example of something I would like to improve is a 2LP set that I found many years ago of a show from MSG in 1974. The quality is a little inferior with the bass being too much out in front and the drums sounding somewhat murky. However since this contains the only live performance of The Remembering that I am aware of, you could say that it has value as a collectors' item.

Hi Masterworks!
Is "The Remembering" on your LP of the MSG '74 show complete? I have the CD, and my Remembering has a cut toward the end. I have heard that some versions of this show do have the complete song. The Remembering seemed to be the "tape flip" song for most of the Tales tour shows. It was also dropped early in the US tour so it's a rare one to even have. If your LP has the complete song, that's worth the price of admission, and let's trade!!
